Why do people go offline to play games they bought digitally?

For this I specifically mean people who download and install a game and then take their PC or console offline whenever they want to play.
Not those who buy physical and just play off the disc.

People who play digitally-sourced games solely offline.
Why do you toggle that online button?

I do this sometimes, but I'm curious about other people's reasons

wait... who does this? that accomplishes basically nothing... what am I missing here?

the only reason I can come up with is to avoid updates?

I don't see any reason to turn the internet off, but I can see a situation in which you move home, for example, and you play your games offline while you get internet.

Maybe one that could be likely is people who wouldn't want to deal with updates because they don't have much time to play when they do.

Some games like Just Cause 3 have poorly implemented online features that just makes the game take longer to load for some reason or otherwise dump annoying pop-ups into the UI. I can do without all that garbage. Thanks.

Rule #2: Never let them know your next move. Don't you know bad boys move in silence and violence???

Because some users don't know about this:

Sometimes you just don't want people seeing the hentai games you are playing.

Also it's super annoying if you are save scum quitting and a person pops up 100 times saying what they are playing.

I don't turn off the internet on pc, but do usually turn off any online functions within the game if available. Reasons for that include to avoid annoying pop ups and to improve performance as online stuff running in the background may cause issues.

I buy all digital but I always appear as offline because I don't want anybody text me when I play. I don't want any human interaction when I play even if I'm a social person outside of gaming. I would do the same if needed for watching a movie or reading a book.

It's actually pretty simple, it's to avoid updates...

Say you have a game that nerfed a weapon OR maybe licensed music had to be removed OR there are also updates that can break/hurt or worsen a game for some

Take the Last Guardian, the disc version has an unlocked framerate (if you don't update) and if you downloaded it back in the day before they updated the download on the store, there is a chance you too could have an unlocked framerate...Why is that important because it means if you play the game on a PS5 it will run at 60FPS due to the higher horsepower...

Hope that helps

Steam kept updating KOTOR after I bought and modded it for graphics and widescreen support, even after I turned off auto updates it reverted my KOTOR back to original like 3 times until I put it to start in offline mode and before started the game. It doesn’t make me do this anymore for some reason but something was a miss, and to get that widescreen with the right font and proper menus isn’t the easiest to do so I was kind of pissed. Xbox still gets confused too when starting the drm check I guessing after your internet goes down or maybe router rebooted it made me put in offline mode to let me play games I paid for.

Better question is why wouldn't you be able to play your downloaded games offline???
Because our corporate overlords need 24/7 control of our gaming experience. So shit like that company trying to push in-game ads becomes standard.

Seriously though, It wouldn't surprise me to see several future games with next to zero multiplayer features require a connection to play.

Neogaf, your unsocial side is showing again.

I play single player games offline because my mates all have my steam share. When steam doesn't know I'm online, they're free to play the library. What do I care about my status on the platform?

(this is the socialism that is killing the industry)

There are plenty of reasons, with temporary loss of internet connection a frequent one.

Why shouldn't people be able to play offline OP?

Because most of the time playing online gives you worse performance than being offline, and that's assuming the games severs are stable in the first place and won't kick you out constantly.

Personally i also for example went offline in Just Cause 3 due too how distracting all the leaderboard popups were.

I didn't want to create bethesda account to play Doom Eternal on steam.

No idea if it is still required after MS bought them.
