why do people pay for subscriptions to Twitch channels?

Ok, so I watch a lot of Twitch. Tfue and ewokttv are amazing at Fortnite with totally different styles, and sypherPK is his own brand of educational x entertaining x skill. but I still am not paying $5, $10, or $25 for access to subscriber only chat or extra emotes.

do any of you pay for Twitch subs (and to who? like do you pay for one person and then when you get bored of them switch to another, or are you subbing to 3 channels like Netflix + Hulu + CBS All Access :pie_thinking:)

why do you do it, what kind of awesome experience am I missing out on, who should I start supporting?! :pie_mansinger:

For viewers who feel like donating to support a streamer, they might as well go for a subscription instead, as it gives them stream perks. I'm sure some streamers probably elevate their subs as The Good Viewers too, encouraging viewers who feel they should be loyal to toss in the $5.
Amazon Prime users also get a free subscription every month, so if you've already got that, there's one way to thank a few streamers a year without tossing up any extra cash.
I use my Prime sub every month, often going for whichever streamer I'm most actively watching, and I donate bits when I earn them from Twitch RPG. Usually it goes to NormalDifficulty, otherwise it's probably Joshimuz.

Never feel pressured to give a streamer subs or donations though. It's not like Twitch etiquette requires every upstanding user to dispense thank yous with their wallet.

People want to support those streamers. It's the same deal as people who throw money at Patreons. I doubt many put value on emotes and whatnot. They just want to see that particular streamer succeed and be able to make a few bucks for their effort.

I have one subscription on Twitch and like the people above me said, I do this to support a streamer.

support I totally understand. but what makes you want to support one streamer over another? who do you sub to? (will check them out)

It's just a way to give back to someone that gives you entertainment.

I've subscribed to Dr Disrespect because he's given me hours of stuff to watch, I also sub to friends because I like to support them.

I subscribed once to a starcraft 2 channel. I did it to financially support the stream, because the content they created gave me enjoyment for many hours and I wanted to support their work and passion.

While I don't watch any streamers (I don't see the point, if I want to watch gameplay then I'll play a game), I do use my prime sub every month just to support one of the old presenters from the UK xbox YouTube channel.

I imagine the same reason why some people have preferences. Like Id rather watch a gameplay video from H20Delirious' perspective despite the same game session from his video being uploaded by his other friends like Terrorizer, vanoss, nogla, moo, etc.

People pay because they like them and would like to support them because the people streaming make a living off the people who pays 5 dollars.

The same reason why people spend money on patreon, probably. Or in my case, Discord Nitro.

Even though all the streams and YouTube Videos are free, we all know that it takes effort and time, and these guys have to make a living, too. So they wouldn't be able to do it if people wouldn't support them financially. You consume their content for hours and hours on end, and if you enjoy it, you might aswell drop 5 bucks a month to do your part.

Donations are a whole different story. Most of them are just there to make you feel special for a second or two, it's a very manipulative system. People get baited into donating so often, it's ridiculous. I remember that one time I was watching a Sodapoppin stream and he kept complaining about the text to speech donations, he was pretending to be really pissed about the "interruptions". And people kept "trolling" him by dropping two bucks just to use the text to speech to "troll" him more. Joke's on them, though, he made like 500 bucks from donations alone during that little sketch.

I have no idea if i'm jaded, old, or extremly cynical (all three probably) but I will never understand the premise of paying people to watch them play games I could be playing and enjoying myself.

Fair enough to watch someone, gain some entertaiment, I guess, but pay them? Dont get it.

you are in fact all three

I don't watch streams let alone streamers. I watch some of my favourites highlights on YouTube but sitting for hours watching someone else play? Nah not my thing, I'd rather play myself. People do it to support their beloved streamers and well, some people likes attention and likes their name being called out in front of thousands.

I don't give my money to any streamer , i use my twitch prime you get free with amazon Prime to a POE streamer. That's it i ain't throwing sheckles at anyone on the internet

Damn op, if you think $5 subs are bad, go watch some of the bigger streamers, or pretty girl streamers, and bask in the glory of those $1000-10,000 tips, and no i'm not joking.

I don't pay for subs, but I do use my Twitch Prime on various small streamers. I prefer to give them the money than someone like Shroud or Doc who most definitely don't need it.

I get a free sub every month due to amazon prime, so i use it for shits and giggles
Me too. I bounce around and give it to whomever is entertaining me that month. My understanding is that the streamer gets paid the same as a $5 sub, but I've never found out definitively.

Some of the people I have more than once given my sub to are:
Cohhcarnage - He plays everything. Super positive stream. He tries to find the good and the fun in all games, but will give his honest opinion at the end
EpicNameBro - Souls games
Lethalfrag - Indies. Typically Binding of Isaac, FTL, Spelunky, Super Meat Boy, Darkest Dungeon, etc
ProfessorBroman - Destiny, The Division etc
UniofTrials - Trials games. He's a Trials superfan and they actually tabbed him to help make the tutorial levels in Trials Rising
ManVsGame - All games and typically on the hardest difficulty
Cnotbusch - He is a professional model maker. You can watch him basically from start to finish make something that someone hired him to do. You see him start with the wireframe, then to the clay, to the formation, to the intricate designs, to the painting. It's awesome. Digital Extremes (Warframe) has hired him in the past to make some models. I don't know what it is, but watching someone do something so intricate and with a lot of concentration is unbelievably relaxing to me.

People mostly don't. If you look at Twitch subscription breakdowns, e.g.

...around 70% of Twitch subs are Twitch Prime, which are free subs included with an Amazon Prime membership. Amazon is heavily subsidizing the entire streaming community and propping up the viability of the pros.

I don't pay Twitch streamers. I value my money and buy gaming stuff that will make me happy.

At best I will give these streamers a thumbs up.
