Why do people rake leaves, I just don' get it

What confuses me even more than raking leaves is why anyone in their right mind shovels snow out of walkways in front of their yards.
You aren't responsible for it, are you? I always assumed those paths are part of the public "road" by a house.

They might use them or just want to be helpful to other people who use them. When I lived in a neighborhood like that I usually shoveled the sidewalk in front of the house to help out the mail man or people walking theirs dogs in the area.

Come on--it's pretty obvious that being able to walk on the sidewalk is nice and convenient. It's safer for kids and more leisurely than having to walk in the street. If it's covered in thick snow, it's inconvenient to use. Thus, people will shovel the sidewalks so they can still be used and enjoyed by everyone.
Even if the city does it, they cannot always do it quickly or on a regular basis. Thus it's up to the people living in the neighborhood to do their part. Or not, and they can just not use the sidewalks.
Is it wrong to prefer the look of the before pic?
You have to get rid of the leaves if you want to mow your lawn though.

No, it's an obvious preference. Some people just prefer having a clean, well maintained lawn and thus will rake their leaves.

I have rocks and palm trees in my yard. Fuck yard work
I don't rake my leaves. My Maple turns red in the Fall and the leaves look cool on my lawn (and I'm lazy).
I see my neighbor raking his leaves for over an hour every weekend.. By the next week his yard is once again covered with leaves.. So he does this every weekend for a month or so. .
Meanwhile, every three weeks I run the mower over my yard for 20min and my grass looks nicer than his.. Makes no sense to me
I think Americans just enjoy doing yard work, however mundane it may be.. just like they love clapping at the end of a shirt, corny blockbuster movie. To each his own..

Where I grew up you were required by law to clear the sidewalk in front of your house and you'd get a fine if it wasn't done. I believe people can actually file a lawsuit against you for if they slip and fall because you didn't clear the snow. Plus it's dangerous when it becomes ice.

It's your property and you are liable for slip and falls. Or you could use a shot gun to keep grandma away. Don't let an old lady fall on your side walk. Depending on the jurisdiction, owners or tenants can be required to clear the sidewalk in front of their house; usually within a specified timeframe.
This is partially why golf is so popular.

If someone falls at gets hurt YOU will be sued.
City codes require that you keep them clear.
In Canada you have 48 hours after a snowfall to clear the sidewalk in front of your property. Fined if you don't.
As for leaves, not just lousy for the lawn, but I imagine there's a higher risk of the drainage sewers getting clogged up if nobody cleared their leaves.

I'm guessing HOA's are responsible for a lot of it. I live in an HOA and its horrible all the stuff they make you do. On the plus side, I live in a desert, so trees pretty much keep their leaves all year. Desert landscaping is where its at. Just have to trim the bushes every so often. Don't have to worry about mowing any grass or having to water it every day to keep it from turning brown.

I've never seen a person shovel the sidewalk in front of their house, that's weird. If the city or town doesn't come along and do it, it's not getting done. So it's not all of Canada.
