Why do people say 2001: A Space Odyssey is boring?

To people saying it bored them: Did you see it on bluray or DVD? Watch it in HD and you'll be too mesmerized to be bored.

you have to watch this high, makes it better

Saw it high once.

All the "LOLSHORTATTENUNSPANZ" replies certainly aren't endearing me to the film.
Do you guys always sit through the 3 minutes intermissions, when watching the movie?
Why on Earth would I sit through an intermission? That's the point where you stand up to stretch your legs, check your phone, and talk to people!

I watched it on VHS the first time, then on a theater screen. It's a gorgeous film, although a few of the parts in the lights sequence look "bad" (I use bad in quotation marks because they just aged more poorly than the rest of the movie).

Wow really? Starting from beyond the infinite to the very end is my favorite part in the whole film. The stargate sequence especially, I wish that had gone on for another 10 minutes.

The intermission and intro remind me how innovative the music was for something from the late 60's. The only other composer that made that impact on me was Herrmann, but the original score from this is really ahead of its time. (Well, the score plus the sound montages)

It's like watching a painting dry. By the end you either think it's a masterpiece, or you just don't get it.

My cinema teacher in Juinor year of HS showed this to the class. I didn't know what to expect, but I was pretty blown away. Of course every kid in the class found it boring and useless.

The methodical pacing made perfect sense to me. It's a movie about the advancement of the human race and I felt like the movie moved the way it did to emphasize how much time passes, and to show the audience the gradual change.

Surprisingly, it's been 3-4 years since that class and I haven't watched it. My senior year cinema teacher and my first teacher in college didn't show the students it. Strange to me.

I feel I should watch it again, maybe I can grasp more.

It's pre-1980s sci-fi. Of course it's slow paced.

You just have to be able to enjoy stuff like that. Like the original Star Trek and its 5 minute overture before the movie starts and the 5 minute slow flight to the ship like within 10 minutes of the movie beginning.
