why do ppl catch feelings over slang?

Film doesn't promote anything

Hm, the way they satirize contemporary culture with the "Ow My Balls" tv show and "Ass" movie does seem to be promoting that American culture at least, is getting "dumber".

And the black and white way the movie handles "stupidity" and "smart" people by portraying a "smart" couple as economically intelligent WASPs and a "dumb" couple as lower class "white trash" and then ties them together with the growing "dumbing down" of American society by positing that the "dumb" lower class people are outbreeding "smart" people, thus causing society to collapse is does seem to be a promotion of eugenicist beliefs that physical and mental fitness are purely genetic.

Although of course, they likely didn't intend the film to be a promotion like that. Accomplishments in ignorance. But it still ends up promoting those beliefs. Besides which, I think all art promotes something, even if it's only "explosions are cool."

The word tryna is the whole reason this discussion is even happening.

We don't understand the bashing that is coming from ppl over a word. No one is typing nonsense to where it's not understandable. It's perfectly fine to ask or use google to find out what something means. Like, I didn't know what ITT or ftfy meant but did I bash ppl for saying it? No. I just googled it real quick and that was it. If you can't ask or google like I do, then u can just skip over the thread/post.

I don't think anyone is typing to where you have to google the whole paragraph to find out it's meaning lmao. That's what it seems like when it comes to the word "tryna" for some people on here.

I'm not worried if people on GAF skip over my post because they didn't understand it, doesn't bother me.

What's shocking me is that ppl are getting hurt over slang. Does it offend ppl? Like wut bruh.

I'd say it doesn't offend people, but it's a constant source of small inconveniences and frustration for many. Your use of "tryna" was just a clear example of it and presented a good target to vent that frustration.

This isn't only about slang words, it applies to many common misspellings. You constantly see people making threads about the use of you're/your, there/their/they're, lose/loose and so on.

It's not even about letting your phone auto correct something for you. It's just a way of speech that somene is using to type. idgaf if anyone thinks it's stupid or whatever the case. I don't let myself get worked up over petty shit like that.

I'm just more surprised at how ppl are letting themselves get worked up over something like this.

I don't think it's stupid, I think it's just pure laziness and comes across like the person doesn't have any respect. Slang is fine but just misspelling things is just lazy and poor communication at the end of the day.

Why do ppl catch feels over ppl using slang? It's the Internet let ppl do their thing bruh. Went in a thread and ITT ppl were catchin feels just because OP said "tryna" are you serious with this shit. It's honestly not that hard to understand IMO and if u need help Google is your friend.

It just amazes me my dude. I'm done ranting n shit, ur thoughts

#Rare thread from ya boy Remark what it do

So slang is okay, but slang that doesn't fit one person's idea of english is laziness.

Yes that is what I said, lazy spelling can't just be called slang, but there is other slang that isn't just misspelling things. And yeh it's obviously my opinion, you don't have to agree.

Whilst I know using slang or text speak in forum posts is not an indicator of intelligence, it does make me perceive whoever wrote it as either a child, or an idiot.

Translation?

Why do people get upset over people using slang? It's the internet, let people express themselves brother. I went into a thread that people were getting upset just because the original posters said "tryna" (rather than trying to) - I can't understand this. It's honestly not that hard to understand in my opinion and if you don't understand, Google is an excellent tool to decipher slang and dialect.

It amazes me my friend (anyone who is listening). I'm done with this rant. What are your thoughts?

This is a rare thread started by your friend Remark, how strange/this is what this topic has brought me to feel like doing?

That's how I figured it anyway, unless you were just messing

Whilst I know using slang or text speak in forum posts is not an indicator of intelligence, it does make me perceive whoever wrote it as either a child, or an idiot.

Yes, the same goes for me. I'd like to add that I also perceive them as ignorant.

But that's my problem right?

racism/white privilege

They think that the only way to write/talk is the traditionally "white" way, and any way that deviates from that ESPECIALLY if it is used predominately by black people is wrong and must be corrected. The argument about foreign readers doesn't hold up either as every language has slang and internet terms. It's like going to 2chan/any japanese message board and complaining about all the WWWW when it isn't in the dictionary. No one would do that. Furthermore there are plenty of TV shows which use colloquial and slang language and they manage to understand but then they see it on the internet or in real life then they pretend as if they don't understand even though any non mentally deficient 10 year old can pick on context queues or look shit up.

Because the safe people running in the middle of the herd find it disconcerting that you're running on the outside. It makes them feel mentally like they are close to the edge and getting to the point where the lions can attack them. So they will be tryna pull out all the stops to trample you. Don't try to mingle with the weak part of the herd and you'll be fine.

I always find it hilarious considering typical internet lingo tends to go unchecked

But that's white people speech. See the person above who equated slang with people from the project. I guess internet speech is white middle class speech.

What's with the sudden trend to squeeze racism/white privilege in every offtopic thread? cmq, I will make sure to use more Italian and German here to make me look less racist.

racism/white privilege

This has nothing to do with color. Typed Scottish slang (overuse not occasional) is something I've seen a lot of and how I view that is not in any way affected by the color of the writers skin. There is no racial connotation. So this white privilege stuff is complete nonsense.

White people don't use slang? Don't be dad's army.

I don't mind mild usage of slang in casual threads like this one, but in threads that either are trying to have serious conversation or are about something that I feel should be a serious discussion and your posts are filled with barely comprehensible slang and internet lingo of the day I'm just not going to read your post. Sorry, but the thread is likely filled with four to five hundred+ other responses from people who actually cared to put in the minuscule effort to make their points coherently, so why should I expend with extra effort to decipher your garbage when you clearly don't have the same respect for me or anyone else reading the thread?

That may be true. But nothing about what you said addresses his points after what you quoted.

My dude Remark, straight homie over here. What's goodie bruh.

No one uses slang to get attention lmfao, the fuck?

It's the internet, this ain't no resume type shit where I gotta use proper grammar to the full extent. It's fine to ask what does that mean but straight up roasting a dude over it is nuts.

I knew right away what catching feelings meant lmfao. It means you're letting yourself get emotionally hurt over slang on the internet in this case.
I blame you for this thread..tryna be hip with your negro vernacular. Ya buggin'..

Because old.

I notice that old is happening to me too. Had to tell my mom that she really should start using you instead of u and are instead of are in text messages. I can read it just fine but my brain hates it. It's a digital form of a stutter. No offense to the stutters out there.

He said it was racism/white privilege. Which was a blanket statement. I am Scottish, I am white, I had a working class background/upbringing. I've seen overuse of Scottish, white, working class slang many times on FB in particular. My dislike of it has nothing to do with my skin color or the other persons color. It has nothing to do with privilege. I was educated to the same level as my peers, as I had a state education. I was taught how to read and write English to a standard that would help me communicate effectively. Within my culture I'll use occasional Scottish slang as it's understood by my recipient. I'll refrain from using it on GAF because my audience is not Scottish.

I have no issue with slang as used for comedic purpose "u wot m8" or internet memes as that's the language of the internet. I'll refrain from using localized slang as it's not the most effective way of communicating with my audience.

My disdain of localized slang has nothing to do with the color, upbringing or country of origin of the poster. I have no way of knowing this anyway.

When you are on a public forum, making a burden for other users to read your posts just because you are too lazy to type something properly, is just rude and egocentric.

If you don't value your opinion enough to make it (or at least try to make it) understandable by everyone, why should I think it's valuable enough to take time and try to decipher it?

It's just my take on this matter as I didn't have any major issues understanding anything in this thread. And I make that post, knowing that it is probably not grammatically correct as English is not my first language ^^

The OP isn't really that hard to figure out.

All he's saying why do people get upset when others use slang. Is that considered hard to understand?

The attitude that the onus is on the viewer to figure out your slang is just wrong. Communication is about attempting to relate your ideas to others and explain yourself to have them understand you as easily as possible. Coming in a global forum and just declaring that you are going to write how you want and fuck everyone else that can't understand you is simply selfish.

Using slang isn't even the problem. Slang is perfectly acceptable in casual conversation with friends or culturally around people you know are most likely going to understand what you mean, but you're talking to (by and large) strangers on here. We come from everyone corner of this planet. Not everyone is going to know what you are referring to or talking about and calling them dense or laughing at them is just bad form.

There doesn't seem to be any point to this thread other than "Fuck all yall, Im going to do what I want!"

I thought to say that someone has "caught feelings" meant that they fell in love with someone?

Example: I've been on a few casual dates with this girl but I think she's already caught feelings.

It means getting emotional in any sense. Catching feelings for a girl, catching feelings because no one tells you anything, etc.

This. I'm not even white and I think it's a little messy how people automatically go straight to that, like shadyspace. Especially with no point to back it up.

Folks don't like tryna to understand people. Also, classism/racism.

If you're gonna try to lump people who don't like TRYNA with classism/racism, at least use the term correct.

Have we broached to topic of what is slang or not? I'm not sure how "tryna" is even slang at all? It's an incorrect contraction of two separate words.

Is something slang just because you say it out loud?

'I went on a date with a girl and she caught "feelings". GAF, what do?!'

Look, ESL can excuse a lot of things, but it's not an excuse for writing in broken shorthand internet jive. There are minimum standards here.
this has been enforced once that ive seen (and i disagreed with it there a lot)

but i see no reason why it shouldnt be enforced a lot more

Word to Jesus's bruised shoulder, people itt acting like it's a crazy ass burden to ask what something means...you know...like they would in real life.

Also take that slang = less intelligent = from the hood, thinly veiled racist and classist bullshit (←) thataway.

Why do people think Popgaf created all manner of speak that's not the Queen's English?
