Why do you hate Tidus from Final Fantasy X ?

As a side-character, I think Wakka worked fine. It was different if he was the main-character like Tidus. I think he fulfills his role as Blitzball leader and a stand-in big brother well. But I have to admit, it has been ages, so you might be right.

That's true. It's been ages for myself as well.

Never hated him. Not his voice actor, not his appearance, not his whiny attitude. I like protagonists that aren't perfect, or aren't what most people (apparently) may perceive as likeable. I thought he was refreshing and fit in the game very well, made the game even more interesting.

It's always so weird to see an FF thread where so much focus is on design and story, when the biggest thing that bugs me about Tidus is his crappy playstyle that only serves to highlight IMO the biggest reasons FFX isn't a great game. The abilities in Tidus' portion of the sphere grid are some of the most worthless/most broken/least interesting abilities in the whole game.

According to FFwiki and consistent from what I remember his abilities are:

Cheer: decent enough
Flee: worthless
Haste: one of the cornerstones of his playstyle, but becomes worthless once everyone has auto haste as IIrc they don't stack
Provoke: used on 1 enemy in the entire game to cheese them into spamming the same demi ability over and over again, very few other practical uses
Slow: the second pillar of his playstyle, this becomes more important after haste becomes redundant
Delay attack/buster: I think does stack with slow but is pretty worthless after unlocking...
Quick Hit: Most broken move in the game (Who am I kidding? there are like 20 to choose from!), combined with haste and slow allows tidus to stack a ridiculous number of turns in before anyone else in your own (auto-hasted) party even gets to do anything (enemies *rarely* get a turn after that)

So yeah, Tidus breaks down to basically slow->quick hit->quick hit->quick hit rinse and repeat. He's an exceptionally braindead character in what is a fairly braindead game.

Agile warrior + Time Mage is a more interesting archetype than many RPG heroes. And you can always use the sphere grid to give him other abilities.

Anyway, I like Tidus. His art design is garish but he has one of the more interesting stories in the Final Fantasy series & I like how they contrast current Tidus with narrator Tidus. Also, it IS his story - without him, Yuna would have been just another summoner and nothing would have changed.

Honestly, the GAF hate that Tidus gets surprises me quite a bit. But then, I suppose I too hate some protagonists from some of the most beloved games.

I almost couldn't stand Zidane. I am not sure how they made a character that I could identify with as little as him, and it felt like they tried to go out of their way to make me dislike him. But then, Eiko is from the same game, and she is almost worse.
Good thing Steiner, Kuja and the rest of the cast pretty much saved that game, and made it great overall.

He was fleshed out but still the back story of a kid with daddy problems still annoys me.

Now the bigger question is if we like Vaan from FF12. My answer: He shouldn't exist and the story should had focused on Bathier as main character.

Introduce character -> kill him off -> introduce his little brother -> never really do much with that plot other than it serve as some kind of rage I guess.

Balthier and Fran are the main characters in my head, and that makes it one of my favourite games ever. I've beaten it sooooooo many times.
Though it makes it easier to play Vaan in the beginning, since he is basically a no-personality type character and you can just project whatever you want into him.

You guys mad crazy, tidus is good t character with a great back story , character development and an awesome weapon to boot. Even his clothes are pretty rad.

Agile warrior + Time Mage is a more interesting archetype than many RPG heroes.

Probably because it doesn't work. Time mages in stuff like FFT are balanced by the fact that they are support mages and don't have any damage dealing potential on their own. If time mages had the highest physical ATK of any class in FFT it would be a much different game.

I don't. Everyone always shits on him about the laugh scene, when it's not even that bad. It's absolutely cheesy, but not horrible

Vaan is way more annoying though.

He is overly whiny and he looks dumb.

But he is probably the most likeable protagonist in a main line Final Fantasy game since they started doing voice but thats mostly because everyone after is the worst. THE WORST!

Vaan is Tidus x2 and Lightning is the personality equivalent of eating a dry weetabix.

I never had a problem with Tidus aside from some questionable voice acting. FFX was a pretty good game, honestly the last FF that feels like FF.

I've only played a few hours of FFX but I think he's a decent protagonist so far with a nicely shaped nose

I've seen people say he's awful and made them quit like after an hour of playing which doesn't make sense to me.

The plot twist surrounding him is next level stupid, his design is a bit abstract but I kinda like it. His voice actor is fine, not so sure about his Japanese one though.

I thought he was all right, but I liked the supporting cast moreso. Also wasn't a fan of his outfit design. It was practical considering his blitzball background, but it was goofy-looking in comparison to most of the other party members.

I mainly hold his first few impressions against him, after which it was hard to recover from. In the first few hours of the game, Tidus does the following:
  • kicks someone else's ball over a mountain, instead of returning it, and is very pleased with himself.
  • pisses over local culture and beliefs even after just having them explained to him, for instance when he entered the Besaid temple's catacombs after repeatedly getting told he wasn't allowed.
  • grabs a megaphone and starts talking smack, and doing that really annoying shitty laugh of his.
Basically when he wasn't whining, Tidus was a total asshole. He grows a bit, but I was beyond caring. Someone earlier mentioned Luke Von Fabre as a comparison, and I think that's a fair one. The two main protagonists of this game are basically Luke and Colette from the Tales series, and they just aren't types of characters I enjoy.

I wouldn't say "hate" per se, but I don't really care for him much at all. He's whiny and his daddy issues (while valid because Jecht is an asshat of a father) come across so inconsequential to the larger picture. Especially since he followed the superior Zidane from FFIX who comes from the same archetype as Tidus. Not to mention, it really is more of Yuna's story as she's the actual heart of it all. Tidus is more of a POV protagonist (although he's a better one than Vaan in FFXII).

Also why in the fuck is random Squall hate being brought up? He's still one of my fave FF protagonists so fuck the haters.
Yeah I realized I love Squall better than any other FF protaginist, even with the botched script because he seemed like a distant sarcastic dude. A way to do an entergetic fun character that battles against inner demons was Kanji for P4. Wonderful writing.

I like seeing some positivity towards Tidus.
As to some of the complaints...I get hating his design. I mean I guess it's supposed to be a uniform for a team of underwater football players but whatever. I get not liking his voice. Most other complaints always seemed unreasonable to me.

For example, self obsessed hero complex? How often does Tidus actually say the "My Story" thing?I can remember three instances, Zanarkand campfire, zanarkand before yunalesca and before the final boss.

Tidus is a great character, actually. I think his character is intentionally designed to be annoying. As such, he naturally bothers a lot of people who then write him off as a horrible protagonist.

Lets see... Tidus is a spoiled rich kid born into celebrity and becomes a star blitzball player at a very young age. He has major daddy issues due to his father being an even better blitzball player and Jecht constantly riding his ass to become the best. Tidus grows up believing Jecht abandoned his family and witnesses how much it hurts his mother. He is a very young adult still coming of age in FFX. I really don't expect any character written with such a backstory to be charming and widely adored.

Asymmetrical pants.

Horrible design, right up there with Lulu's belt skirt. FFX is peak Nomura awfulness. He was much better before and since.

When I first played the game when I was a kid, I hated him because he wasn't a cool badass hero guy.

When I played the HD Remaster, I ended up liking him because I realized that...he's just supposed to be a kid, and that's fine.

To me, him and FFX represents Square turning away from high fantasy FF towards weird Jpop fantasy FF. Completely alienated me from one of my favourite series and I've moved on and never looked back.

Other then that his design is shit.

Should probably credit FF8 with that. Squall was, after all, indirectly based on Gackt.

I don't understand Lulu. Terrible design and she didn't feel important to the cast nor the story. She was just.. there. In all her terribly designed glory.

I think Nomura just wanted to make another female character with big tits because Rikku certainly didn't fit that bill.

The key thing about FFX is that Tidus and Yuna are both massive idiots and actually that's perfectly fine. It works in the game's favour. It's much better than playing the usual incommunicative emo who makes inexplicably bad decisions, which is what you normally get in a JRPG - in this case Tidus makes bad decisions because he's a moron, and you just have to deal with that. I quite like the guy really, he's such a massive tool that I actually find him funny.

He does look like Meg Ryan though.
