Why does my Wii sound like a ticking clock?

Holy crap, maybe I just never noticed before, but it seems like it's constantly reading the disc VERY loudly at 1-2 second intervals. Is this a precursor to it dying? And what's Nintendo's policy on repairs? Thanks for any help..

As odd as this sound, have you checked to make sure it's in its stand properly? It can jiggle about quite a bit.

Is it doing that for all of your games?
The only two I am playing lately (Rune Factory Frontier and EA Sports Active). I will try adjusting the stand also (thanks BGBW).

Mine does this ONLY on Boom Blox and no other game.

It honestly sounds like it's going to shit itse;f at any second when I play Boom Blox.

I'm going to trade it and buy the sequel JUST so I don't have to hear it anymore. :lol It worries me.

Mine, and both of my friends' Wiis do this.

It sounds like a really large UMD drive. Makes me appreciate how quiet the PS3 drive is. Also makes me appreciate XBLA/PSN/Wiiware/VC/Steam even more. :D

For the record, it's the sound of the laser mechanism moving across the disc radius.

The disc drive is probably going kaput. If it's out of warranty, you can get it repaired for about $75 + shipping.
yeah, mine did this. i had to send it in a month ago and was without a wii for a few weeks, though that was because i sent it home and i was still 1200 miles away at school. it was repaired the day it got there and got home the next day.

It's becoming self aware. Burn it, immediately.

It may only be doing this for a few games, but eventually it will do it for every game, after which it will stop working.

Backup your saves, and send that sucker back to Nintendo. They can restore your VC purchases if they have to give you a new one.

This happens when you play a shit game that needs to go back and forth on the disk to go seek for data.

Nintendo is having a TRC for wear and tear where they ask to organise the data so there's minimum disk seeking but let me bet you that just like with Red Steel, some other big publishers or shovelware crap can get away with it.

I would put those games in my Wii.

When did you start putting those dots at the end of your posts? Stop it.

I get this on my launch Wii when I play My Sims...I don't recall this happening any other time, but it was/is a little scary, loud clicks too.

My Wii made some seriously weird noises when I was plying Red Steel, wasn't so bad throughout the first 2/3rds of the game but then the drive started making a lot more noise, so I stopped playing. It isn't like Red Steel was good enough to fuck up my Wii for.

I just sing the puppet pals mysterious ticking noise song whenever it starts doing that.

Yeah, mine is a launch unit too. Oh well, guess I'll just deal with it until it dies...

I think someone once suggested this happens with EA games. The only EA games I have are MySims Kingdom, Boom Blox, and EA Sports Active, and it happens to these three, and no others for me. Though it's most obvious with Boom Blox, where it constantly sounds like it's about to asplode.

It did happen pretty hard with Boom Blox. Anyone knows if the sequel has this problem too?

Some games do that, simple as that. Sims - Castaway (yeah, I know) makes my Wii super noisy

I think the solution for your particular case should be fairly obvious.

Mine did this. I sent it to Nintendo and they fixed it.

It was still under warranty at the time, though.

Time to get yourself USB Loader and save the wear and tear on your drive. Or just send it in and pay your $75 first.

Godfather is the absolute worst since it is constantly streaming non-contiguous data from disc.

look up youtube videos on wii drive problems until you find one that matches your problem. a lot of the time it's a simple fix and imo fixing it yourself is much better than sending it to nintendo and getting a shit refurb in return.

i went through 3 refurbs and lost all my data before getting a good wii. shortly after i found out my original wii could have been fixed by simply tightening a screw. why nintendo couldnt do that and send the same one back still blows my face off.

Or you can buy a HDD for $75 and backup the game in it. That way, the disc drive won't have to run while you're playing.

Believe it or not, I have just ended the thread!

My launch unit has done that since day 1. Everyone tells me my Wii is about to die, but it's still clicking right along three years later.

Your disc drive is going kaput, someone set you up the bomb.

Seriously, just USB Load everything, you don't need no stinking disc swapping and load times!

yeah but when you use usb/harddrive dont you have to install the homebrew channel and worry about updates and crap because they could brick your system?

I honestly didn't think disc-swapping was ever a hassle.....

I hate digital distribution....seeing that people actually don't want to swap discs anymore makes me sad :(
