Nintendo is it's own biggest platform. It's directs reach millions of live viewers at only a day's notice. It's franchises are some of the highest grossing across all media. One can walk into a random village in a developing and find people who know Mario and Pikachu by face. Nintendo has no need to subsidize an esport program to achieve it's goals.

I used to like competitive online games, then gaming expanded to the normies and everything went to crap. I'm not suggesting this as cause and effect, just a lot of enshittifying all at once.

That being said, Nintendo has a pretty big library of party games that could be esports it they actually wanted to, but thankfully they don't.

Gaming tournaments have been a thing since the beginning but in the end is not the companies but we the players the ones that decides what games to play. Most if not all games that where designed to be e-sports have failed because companies never understood that Halo 3, CS, Smash Bros, DOTA was fun to play at first, THEN people start to take it seriousness.

• Nintendo knows they can't completely financially control it
• They don't make that many games that could be esports
• They don't want to deal with the drama that would hurt their image as the safe company for families
• Enough esports are struggling to maintain themselves financially, even the ones with decent viewership.

In my opinion it's because Nintendo is a built around family friendly culture and for the most part tell me an esport that isn't filled with toxicity? The had smash brothers and I remember them having some concerns either that community even.

I think they killed off the potencially biggest event in 2 decades (remember the million dollar community funded smash world tour series?, me neither because it got canceled).

That said i do remember when they themselves had events, those where fun and would be nice if they came back globally with many different games.

I think it's because of two main reasons:

• Nintendo likes to have complete control of their IPs/image, especially for current games.
• Money.

Nintendo has historically been extremely aggressive about their IP. They don't want anyone meddling with it, and having third party tournaments with their characters and logos is an easy way to lose control of what image they want to convey. The only time they begrudgingly conceded was when they allowed Smash to be at Evo, and that was because of the extremely bad PR they were receiving when they tried to pull it out. They tolerated it until Sony bought Evo, at which point it made no sense to let it continue.

They also don't want anyone profiting from their own IPs. If there is money to be made, they will be the ones to organize the tourneys/leagues, which also allows them to control marketing and image. They did try to do this when launching the Switch! There was a push to make Arms (lol), Splatoon and later Smash esports, all with officially sanctioned leagues and tournaments. It failed miserably.

What Nintendo doesn't understand is that most competitive communities arise with grassroots movements from the most passionate fans. Ironically, they do their hardest to squash these groups in the name of protecting their IP/image.
