Why does the US have so many murders?

They serve all day if you make em an offer they can't refuse

Lack of education.
Boredom.
Financial inequality.
Ease of access to weapons.

People don't value life and the people that breath the same air as them.

A variety of reasons.

1. Easy access to high powered weapons such as military style assault rifles.
2. Greater inequalities in society. A culture of every person for themselves where social protection is considered equal to communism.
3. The pervasive influence of the far right on national politics.
4. The devastating effects of Reaganomics and the Clinton era repeal of Glass-Steagall.

Reading the thread about that execution in Ohio I caught something that left me almost speechless. Apparently, only in that state the average murder is around 520 each year.
And that's from murders. Homicides are probably waaaaaay higher than that.
I'm from a country with less than 80 homicides last year. When a murder like those you can read about here so often happens, with rape involved, it becomes an absolute national sensation for months.
So why the US has so many murders compared to the rest of the Western world? I remember that when I was studying Psychology and Agression, the most common explanation was that guns by their own nature make the act of murder easier than, say, killing someone with a knife, and not because the physical effort required by the later, but because guns help to establish emotional distance towards the target since, well, you fire the gun from a distance and things don't become close and personal most of the time.
But I think something is missing here, because it's not only murder, it seems that other serious crimes like car theft or assault are more common as well. So, what's the explanation you guys have for this?.

1. murder and homicide are the same thing...
2. most gun murder (almost all) are committed with a handgun and are done at very close range.enough to see the white of their eyes as they say. so, no guns don't make less detached.
3. it's a country of over 300 million with immigrants from all over the world.
4. massive consumption society.
5. no investment in trying to fix the ghettoes. will never happen whioch means bad schools, bad education leads to high crime etc.

No social safety net.

A culture that glorifies violence and narcissism.

No gun control.

gun control or gun ban? 'cause control has done jack shit.

Hahaha, you really think that rap music leads to more murders?

you honestly have no sense of humor, i'd have checked out if I were you.

Gangs, putting a bunch of people below the poverty level all together in massive housing projects or cities. Drugs, ease of getting guns. America loves guns, drugs, and alcohol. The three big things that drive violence.

Murders are homicides. And they been trending down for the last 25+ years. We have a higher population and diversity than most countries.

Ohio has a population of about 11 million. Canada has a population of almost 35 million.

Ohio- 520 murders last year
Canada- 543 murders in 2012

Higher population and diversity (Canadian major cities are some of the most diverse regions in the world) doesn't explain this.

no.

A shitty combination of:

Poor education
Rampant poverty
Shitty parenting
Lack of healthcare (Specifically lack of comprehensive mental health services)
Gang activity (See Poor education/rampant poverty)

In my opinion, it's none of these.

Not one post about the media? They have a hand in this too. In impoverished countries, if it goes unreported, it didn't happen. :\

But seriously, war on drugs, poor education, lack of jobs, how sucky it is to be poor here, war on drugs, and war on drugs.

The gang activity is also fostered by high incarceration rates. It feeds on itself.
