Why don't more people only drink water?

so, new debate... room temp vs cold.

i much prefer water at room temp. it's MUCH more drinkable. when i'm thirsty, it goes down much quicker than the ice variety. iced water seems like a waste of energy to me.

oh noes! GREEN PO PO WOOP WOOP.

room temp water takes longer to quench thirst and eventually makes me feel bloated. so cold it is.

The water in my area is smelly, even filtered. So if I want drinking water, I have to buy it, and then I might as well buy something I enjoy more.

(At work, I drink unsweetened tea, since it covers up the flavor of the water.)

People want to be fat ;) In all seriousness I think as others have said that people get hooked on the rush from sugar and caffeine, but you don't want to get addicted to that stuff health wise.

Buster Bleuth? Stealth Arrested Development advertisement? I approve.

That is a little too much "only" to be healthy. Life needs a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

Nice to see the purity of essence make an appearance.

You guys saying you don't drink water-- if you were lost in a desert for 3 days with nothing to drink and came across two bottles. Would you choose 1) water or 2) soda or juice.

I usually drink a lot of Crystal Light, but now I am starting to hear a lot of bad things about the fake sugar they use in it. I am starting to work more water into my diet to replace some of the it.

My work offers free soda, so it makes it kinda hard to avoid some times. I try to only do one a week. But every now and then I give in and drink one a day. Never more than that. Other than that I drink soda with Pizza, french fries, or fast food. At restaurants I get water.

I do it mostly to save money and make what I am eating a tiny bit more healthy.

Not even a filter makes the water taste good at my new place. :(

I still drink a ton of water, though. Basically if it isn't going to chemically act on my brain, I don't like spending money on it. So it's Coffee---->Water------>Beer on a day like today.

Sometimes I drink a lot of Coke though. Because it's tasty like sugar.
on the filter part, have you tried a three stage filter that adds minerals as well as filtering stuff out? a regular filter at my house doesn't do enough to make it drinkable, but a three stage works well because the minerals mask out the other impurities that make it taste poopy.

you should try getting into soda that has real sugar in it too. not because of any spacey health reasons, but because it tastes a crap load better.

The term Diet Soda should be made illegal. People actually believe it
i see statements like this all the time, but i've never heard anyone say they were going on a soda diet. diet soda is better than regular soda and if you're calorie counting or weight watching replacing regular soda with diet soda will absolutely help you diet.

like all health scares, people seem to be 'skeptical' about artificial sweeteners, and its a feeling that seems to generally come BEFORE any science supporting it. that isn't real skepticism, that's the unhealthy kind.

diet sodas aren't a magic bullet. they can't just be part of your diet and have you lose weight by themselves because we know the body will still crave those missing calories elsewhere, but that's true of just about anything in trying to control your intake.

but they absolutely can be part of a healthy diet.

diet soda doesn't MAKE you hungry. reducing your calorie intake makes you hungry.

suggesting to make anything illegal, you need good hard evidence that doing so will improve society, and i really doubt you've got anything good enough for this.

There is a documentary on Netflix about the marketing of water, the politics of water and how the bottled water companies get their water. It was fascinating really. There is huge money in water.

NYC has some of the best tap water in the world, providing your plumbing is good. It's one of the reasons they say the pizza is so good.

I switched to only drinking water about 6 months ago. It was a little weird, but now it actually tastes good. So, just wondering. Why don't more people, really first world inhabitants, drink water when they eat meals?

Also, another question. Why do low income people buy soda over just drinking water? Wouldn't it save money for them in the long run to just drink water during their meals?

Edit: More info. 22 year old male. Used to drink soda, but stopped b/c mother thought it was unhealthy. Then only drank fruit juice. Then stopped that 6 months ago to only drink water.

Here in Mexico people drink more coke, pepsi than water becuse at least you know coke-pepsi are purified.

I grew up wary of tap water for some reason.

Probably something to do with Pepsi and Coke putting up huge amounts of money to advertise their bottled waters.

Water kicks ass though. I started drinking mostly just water a year or so ago and I definitely feel better than when it was all soda, juice, and milk, though I do indulge myself from time to time.

Anyone who says water is boring has not been drinking it long enough without deluding themselves with soft drinks and other crap to really appreciate how good it is.

Try it, do water only for about two weeks. Drink a pint every 40-60 minutes. You wont want to go back!!!

Till you some how break the habbit how I have...

I know the fruits! Its just hard to go back... its like anything else you get used to something and love the habit. Right now my Habit is drinking Frozen Strawberry Lemonades from Mcdonalds LOL

passionate rant
Woah, man. I get how it is for you if this is your job or something. I just went off on someone the other day with a rant on my particular field. However, going on some big argument like I'm a food snob after I make a couple short quips is a little overboard. We haven't even defined our terms yet.

My idea of food that sucks ass is something that is boring and one-sided. It is my experience that this is the vast majority of everyday American food. We like one-trick ponies which we then try to fix up with condiments that are ridiculously overpowered. Every where else in the world I have eaten seems to understand how to make food from simple ingredient selections yet resulting in complexity and balance of flavors. If you want to call enjoying the foods of nearly any culture but here snobbery, I guess I am a snob, but I will have to disagree.

Also, judging by your profession, you probably have a lot of access to all kinds of shit across the board of quality. You also have way more free time to research where all the good shit is because you aren't distracted by so much non-food business that many other people deal with to keep their lives going. In my experience (again talking averages) it's a pain in the ass to try and find quality food, especially outside of major cities, and even more especially when away from the coast; that being a really massive portion of the country as well as the part I live in.

Personally, after experiencing fresh, natural, well-seasoned foods, and not just in full meals but in simple forms that can be taken along with you, McDonalds literally makes me gag. If you can still manage to enjoy it and say it works well enough for its purpose, good for you. You probably enjoy food so much you should get a job based on it. Oh wait...

I only drink water, alcohol (mixed w/a lil soda), or milk. I have come to appreciate water greatly in my adult life. I can't believe my mother used to ply us with soda and kool-aid.

I drink plenty of water, but variety is the spice of life.

Coffee, tea, sparkling water, beer, wine, mixed drinks... Why deprive yourself?

diabetes.

can't resist the coca-cola either

and at least they're made with real sugar in Mexico still. tastes so much better.

I drink 2-3 diet sodas a day. I drink them because I enjoy them, and I frequently laugh at all the aspartame is evil conspiracy theories. I also drink about 1/2 gallon of water a day at least.

I mostly drink water, especially during the day at work. I drink about 4 bottles on average, I'd say.
When I come home at night, I drink water or unsweetened green tea. Lately though there has been a sale on Gatorade so I've been drinking that, for better or worse.

I don't know why so many people don't regularly drink water or at least tea. I drink pop myself and always have a case at home, but a 12 pack lasts me about 3-4 weeks.

water is great, i drink a ton of water. maybe a gallon a day.

but why would i drink ONLY water? like you said, we live in the first world. we have money. we have options. i drink a coke every now and then, and f'ing love it. all of the "simply" juices - amazing. why would i not drink them? not even bringing alcoholic beverages into the equation.

99.9999% of stuff i consume is either food or beverage. i try to mix up my foods, and i try to mix up my beverages. it'd be boring otherwise. a "water only" diet would be like eating just dog food for the rest of my life. no thanks.

well to be fair, it wouldn't be exactly like that would it?

unless you currently eat dog food regularly.

I usually drink something else when eating because water doesn't help cleanse the palate. Whatever taste was in your mouth before the water is still there after.
My boyfriend always says sparkling water cleanses the palate but I just can't drink it because it tastes like crap - sparkling water that is.

water is fucking great. i mean, throw in a little aspartame, a dab of phosphoric acid and a pinch of caffeine and water is the best fucking beverage around.

I enjoy drinking things other than water. I drink a stupid amount of it but life would be boring if we only consumed things that were "good" for us.

I hate drinking water with my meals. It just tastes weird :|
BUT, drinking cool water on it's own is nice, or freaking amazing when you're thirsty.

I pretty much only drink water or beer/wine/cocktails. Typically it's water with all meals, and when I get thirsty, and a serving or two of alcohol.

This past weekend I went on vacation to a beach house with my family. I felt like I was in hell because no one had purchased any water and all that was in the house was diet sodas. I drink soda so infrequently that if I am going to drink it I certainly don't want it to be diet.

i was just thinking like, if humans could get all the sustenance they need from some kind of tasteless, 100% healthy magic pill, or dog food, there would be some people who would eat only that. then there would be people who would say "no, i still want pizza. i still want pasta. i still want kim chi. i want to consume fun things".

More of a cleanliness thing, actually.

Que? Assuming your American or European, municipal water supplies are required to be of a certain cleanliness and free of bacteria. Most of the contamination you'd find in your tap water would come from the pipes in your own home and that would be easily removed by any carbon filter. No such requirement exists for bottled water.

Notice how I quoted his question about poor families?

A poor family isn't going to think about water filters.
