Why don't they make a Zelda-style Dragon Quest game?

Yes, yes, no-one could touch Nintendo when it comes to the Zelda style and formula. Still, that doesn't mean other great games cannot be made in the same vein by other people. Say what you will about Kingdom Hearts' plot, but the gameplay is still fun. And Okami is just great all around.

Zelda's action-adventure with puzzle and RPG elements is really accessible. You don't have what might seem to some players like convoluted menus or command, and wait and watch gameplay. Combining this with DQ's charming universe seems like a no-brainer. Just thinking of the characters you'd meet and places you'd explore coupled with a classic DQ story seems so fun. I'd say it's much more of a worthy venture than the repetition-fest musou spin-off that they're giving DQ.

I know there were murmurs of DQIX initially being this type of game and the fanbase kinda went apeshit and made SE revert back to something more classic. They don't necessarily have to make a mainline entry in this style. A side-title should be fine.

Hell, get Nintendo to help make and publish if needed. It'd be great on the 3DS or WiiU if PS4 doesn't seem like a feasible home for such a title.

I haven't played any in the "Slime" series (Rocket Slime), but those are top down adventure games aren't they? That's sort of Zelda-like.

It'd also probably cost more to make for a spin-off, take someone more expensive than Omega Force, and all for a genre that does not sell well in the primary (and currently only) market for the series.

I'm all for games aspiring to be grander but let's not pretend that all things were equal between DQ Heroes and a hypothetical DQ Zelda-like and they simply chose the former on the whim.

They are. Although with a secondary emphasis on combat sections revolving around giant mecha, IIRC. Quite fun.

Better question*: Why don't they just release the goddamned DQ7 remake in the West?

*because Rocket Slime already exists

Given my (sorry) dislike of the DQ series for its hardcore traditional RPG angle, I'd probably like this.

It's simple. People who make games make stupid shit like BulletStorm and Evil Within. They want to make grimdark horseshit instead of enjoyable games that are FUN.

There have been the Slime MoriMori, Kenshin, and Mystery Dungeon spinoffs, and now there is DQX MMO and Heroes. There's probably room for a Zelda clone but it means weighing what the value is in making such a spinoff.

It being a mainline game would create a lot of grief.

Buy Fantasy Life.

It's a decent mix of Zelda + Dragon Quest, in a way.

Right from my finger tips. To be quite honest, as I play it, I wonder if Fantasy Life is what Level 5 originally wanted to do with DQ9, with its action RPG reveal and all. Remember a lot of push back from series diehards over that unveil.

I like musou games, you jerk.

Pretty much want a PS4 for Heroes and Bloodborne. Could lose a lot of hours on those.

Agreed that Fantasy Life feels like Dragon Quest. There aren't really any puzzles though, so not exactly Zelda-like.

As a huge fan of both Zelda and Dragon Quest, I don't understand why you would want this.

Dragon Quest is best as an addicting mechanically simple RPG.

We can ask all kind of questions, like why don't they make RPGs with Ninja Gaiden style combat?

Let us just face it: ideas =/= reality.

I'd ask the opposite question. Why don't they make a Zelda spinoff that's a full on JRPG? It's a more lateral move for the franchise that Mario RPGs are, and it would probably appeal to a bit broader base. Zelda games usually have strong supporting casts, it would be nice to see them put to more active use.

Games are the very manifestation of ideas. It's conversations similar to these that lead to products.

I'm confused with what this topic is asking. How should Dragon Quest be styled to be like Zelda? Like, should it basically just be like a Zelda game but with a leveling/EXP system and equips? Should it just have dungeons like Zelda? More Zelda-style puzzles? A battle system like Zelda?

I don't think I'd mind more Zelda-esque puzzles (I guess think Golden Sun), but anything else would be a spin-off and whether or not the game is tied to the Dragon Quest brand would basically have no effect on the quality of the game. I wouldn't mind an internally developed Zelda-style game from some SE team tied to the DQ brand I guess.

What are you even trying to say?! You're very badly generalising the industry in two games, which themselves are both fairly unusual and unique. I don't even

Not to mention Bulletstorm is one of the most creative shooters in years. It had such a lovely campaign.

I'd be all over that too.

Basically something like if you take any Zelda game
No not the PhilipsCDi ones you heathen
and give it the Dragon Quest Skin, aesthetics, world, characters, creatures, humor and personality.

If it's gonna have a more robust growth system and story and cast akin to a traditional RPG, that'd be awesome too. I guess if you're gonna have a party it can control like Kingdom Hearts, switch between characters on the fly, or have it be co-op multiplayer.

I dunno, the possibilities are endless. All I know is that the more I think about this, the more I wanna ride a Slime-Epona.

Exactly. I wish more shooters were like Bulletstorm; the idea that someone presents it as the nadir of awful grimdark serious shooters is just hilariously stupid.
