Why don't we get fun intros like this anymore?

The nature of games have changed. Before these were wonderful tools to help immerse the player into the game, as well as attract those who didn't know anything about it. But nowadays people can find out more from a game by just looking it up on YouTube or something similar, and a decent majority now just want instant gratification and jump right into the game. Why waste resources making an opening video only about 15% are going to watch?

Because campy Saturday Morning Cartoon CG openers are a relic from the 90's that don't fit the tone of most games today.

That said, I have fond memories of Tomoyasu Hotei's Russian Roulette music video playing before the JP version of Onimusha 2.

I agree with that broheim.

Some still have them. The question is, do you bother to watch them more than once these days?

Yes, every SINGLE TIME I started up Persona 3 or 4 I watched the intro. It was like watching your favorite anime. You never skip the opening.

.

I agree that they don't fit the tone of "most games today" (I'm imagining a parody Bioshock anime opener that someone needs to do :P)

But I don't think they are a relic... if the game is whimsical, then an opener like this would be awesome. jRPGs, character action games.. even more western games could do something like this. I could see something like the opening to Dexter on games that are even a little mature.

It's in the English version too. You have to wait at the title screen though.

Suikoden 3 is the best one ever. Made you feel like you were about to play the best game ever, especially after 2, whoops (wasn't a horrible game.) Komani and atlus are (or were) the best at this stuff.

I GET KNOCKED DOWN, BUT I GET UP AGAIN!

Never played Soul Blade in my life, but God, that intro is way too similar to the one from Melee.

Who remembers these?

SFIV had Indestructible. Loved it:

Edit: And TC, I think there are two possible answers:
1) Maybe developers aren't having as much fun developing this generation.
2) Games are trying more to be a "serious" form of entertainment.

My favorite intro, for the worst game of its series:

Another amazing intro for a horrible game:

Karst I knew you were gonna post FFVIII and CC before even reading what you wrote.
