Why going to sleep should scare the hell out of you

Almost every night when i fall asleep it feels like i'm getting a heart attack or something. Like a pain in my chest or as if my heart stops beating but as soon as i awake its gone. I think its a form of the mentioned hypnic jerks. It's annoying as fuck.

This one scared the shit out of me recently. It sounds REAL. Like a really LOUD fucking bang.
As if a loud firecracker went off in my head. I feared i had brain damage that caused it.

Stress and fatigue sound like a plausible cause.

:lol yeah, oh well. it happens. god i even remember the woman i was fucking in my dream. Some big titted blond mom. God i was banging her hard and then while i was cumming i thought: oh nooo, this is a dream. I checked my girlfriend who was next to me. Thank god she was still asleep. I feared i might have made some noise, or even spoken in my dream.

Throughout a full year you will swallow 7 spiders in your sleep.
Amazing. 7? That must mean something. Why do we ALL get to eat 7 spiders in our sleap in our lifetime.
Even when we have short lives?

I've got a mild case of hypnic jerkia i guess. I think it's mild because it never really bothered me all that much.

I have hypnic jerks on the reg. /kennypowers.

Seriously, it happens to me quite a bit, though I notice it's most active when I don't sleep and then, well, fall asleep. I hate it :lol

Sleep Paralysis: When you awake you are fully conscious, but unable to move.

I experinced this a couple times in the middle of the night a few years ago. It was scarey as hell. Not only because I caouldn't move, but you see things. Like the article said it is very vivid. I saw black figures (like a person made of shadows) moving towards my bed both times.

The article says that is normal and ofter this is when people think they where abducted by aliens. I slept with my bedroom door locked for up until recently because of this happening.

I frequently awaken suddenly thinking that I'm choking or about to choke. Sometimes I'll feel like I had a piece of gum in my mouth and it's about to go down the wrong pipe. I get up and run to the sink to get some water and frantically try to swallow, only to realize after a few seconds that I wasn't choking at all.

Thankfully I've never done this yet when I had a girl over or when I had a girlfriend. I don't remember it happening before last year, actually.

Sleeping is scary man, what with weird ass dreams or nightmares, accompaniec by those things in the OP's list...fuck this, I am staying up forever :lol

Sleep Paralysis: When you awake you are fully conscious, but unable to move.

False Awakening: You wake up from a dream, but it's actually... ANOTHER DREAM.

Hypnic jerk: Random jerks and twitches during sleep, complete with falling sensation.

Night Terror: Extreme anxiety and the inability to wake up when you're caught between being awake and asleep

Noctunal emission: MY UNDERWEAR

Fan death: Urban legend that states leaving an electric fan on overnight will cause hypothermia or asphyxiation.

I have false awakenings one night, once a week on average* Pain in the fucking ass cause I wake up thinking I haven't slept when I have.

Hypnic Jerk, I went through a period where I had every 2/3 nights a week for 2 weeks a few months ago. For some reason I thought someone was about to kill me or attack me :|
On the plus side I haven't had sleep paralysis for months now!

And on the awesome side, On Wednesday, I realised I was dreaming, it didn't last long but it was so real and vivid. I was in some village and there was no sound and no people. I started making headway to the door of the house but because I was so excited everything started to go grey and I actually woke a few seconds before my alarm went off.

These both suck ass. Sleep Paralysis more than the other.

This. Especially when you get sleep paralysis in an awkward position and you can't ask for help. I thought I was about to die it was terrible... ;-; and then it happened again. D:

Have gotten all of these before. Sleep paralysis is so god damn frustrating. I also tend to get both sleep paralysis and night terrors together. Where I am caught between sleep and wake and all I want to do is get out of bed to wake myself up because I am convinced something or somebody is in the room with me but I can't seem to move.

Luckily it only happens once in a blue moon

This is usually a memorable and pleasurable thing.

Here's one not listed. I heard about somebody who slept on their arm, cut off their circulation and when they woke up they could no longer use their arm anymore.

Then again, that person was old

I've had this a couple times (obviously not permanently).

This sucks and is a really scary thing to wake up to; your arm just dangling there because you slept on it wrong.

I had hypnic jerks while younger but not lately.

edit: Another scary thing is waking up and seeing visions of things that died over a year and a half ago.

My brother used to have really bad night terrors... It got to the point that I would expect to hear him screaming bloody murder every night around 11:00 PM. He never remembered anything, and it was virtually impossible to wake him up when it was happening.

Startling and freaky as hell the first few times it happens, but we all got used to it.

I usually get Hypnic Jerks and False Awakenings. I'm okay with them. I actually enjoy False Awakenings because I hate waking up. So when I really wake up I'm happy that I wasn't actually awake before. >.>

I had such a frantic dream last night I woke up with a terrible headache.

I don't even remember what it was about, I just remember it being frantic.

Did my head explode in my sleep?

I have hypnic jerks all the time... it sucks!

Once i fell asleep in the train and hypnic jerks literally "kicked in"! (I kicked the man sitting in front of me kinda hard... he laughed).

The only thing I hate is when I fall asleep and then wake up, what feels like a second later, and notice that the whole night has passed already. Haven't happened to me in many many years, but I still remember it vividly. Hate that shit :( Not sure what it's called, really. It's like a 8 hour time travel, done in your sleep, in a second or two. Screws you up pretty good the next day, imo.

Edit: Old thread :S

I used to get sleep paralysis a bunch, but have only had it occasionally the past few years.

I experience hypnic jerks all the fuckin time.

I thought this was going to be about how you might end up dying in your sleep and never wake up or something.

I don't understand why- You shouldn't really have to fear that if you just remember to turn your fan off.

I can get this pretty easily because I have narcolepsy. Pretty annoying and feels very uncomfortable. Kind of like when you want to reach something but really can't, I try to move my body but it feels as if I'm choking or something, since nothing moves. This often happens if I sleep during the afternoon, not so much during a "real" sleep during the night.

Hypnic jerks all the time.

I got Exploding Head once last year. Sounded like a gunshot in my head, woke up screaming "HOLY FUCKING SHIT!" Scared the piss out of my roommate.

Falling asleep as you masturbate is just the worst. You wake up the next day, dick in your hand, and you have a hell of a lot of re-arranging to do when your mother bursts through the door with the breakfast.

That happened to me. Freaky at first. It's as if something big fell infront of me in a dream and I leaped out of bed yelling like a jackass. :lol

I always thought it was my past laziness of not wanting to get up, but I guess I can say I had this.

Yeah. This one was freaky. I thought it only happened on TV, but it happened to me once so far. :lol

Happened to my sister. She bolted out of bed screaming. I freaked out but cornered her, trying to stop her from moving and screaming. She later stopped after screaming bloody murder only to ask, "Why am I not in bed?" (More detailed story in the paranormal thread.)

oh my god This happened to me several times during puberty. I remember the first time, actually. I was dreaming of a girl from school who developed big boobs pretty early and I dreamt she invited me over and let me touch them a bit then we had sex. It felt so good, but I woke up to find that I had wet my boxers. I thought I peed the bed until this happened again, with a similar dream. I looked down to see that it wasn't pee but a white liquid. I thought I honestly had something wrong with me until I bumped into the net. :lol I don't remember the last time I had a wet dream, but I used to have it like every other week. Shit I was a horny assed dude but I guess I still am, just not a lot of sexy dreams.

I have to sleep with an electronic fan on in the room. There's something about... the combination of the fan humming, and the breeze, that I can't sleep without.

Also, all of these things are pretty bad, but the worst, IMO is when you are having a nightmare so bad (running from the cops, house burnt down, loved one dies, ect...) that your subconscious tricks you into believing that it's real. You wake up feeling so stressed, but when you finally wake up, there is this huge fuckin relief... OMFG it's not real Grandma didn't actually steal my comic book collection and then get run over by a tractor that I left outside without the parking brake on! It's like when you wake up, you have to tell somebody how amazing it is that it didn't actually all just happen.

Do these actually exist? I'd always been told this was supposed to happen in health class but I haven't had one and don't know anyone that has ever experienced this. It seems it would be more common for a girl to wet their underwear while in their sleep as it only takes a state of arousal for them to get wet, but for a guy it has to be a full blown orgasm, and I can't imagine an orgasm occurring without some form of stimulation or touch.

I fell asleep in a chair once and experienced this upon waking up. Holy hell, I screamed like a little girl for like three minutes. :lol I was young at the time and scared shitless.
