Why haven't you played Gears 2 yet ?

Specifically talking about the campaigns:
I liked Gears 1 a lot, but Gears 2 kicks the shit out of it and then some. Even if you didn't like Gears 1, but like shooters in general, I still think you should play Gears 2.

Specifically about the stories and the characters, I like them. It's the video game equivalent of a fun summer blockbuster movie. I even found the characters to be likeable. It's just another shooter, done really well but I think the characters take it to another level for me. They may be stereotypes but they actually have character, which is more than you can say for a lot of games. I like wandering into a room full of blown up shit and having Dom pipe out with some sarcastic remark. It's like Uncharted, which I thought was another alright game with a ridiculously plain plot, but where the characters took it to another level. I started to like that game because of Drake's random mutterings to himself, and the sheer absurdity of blowing up a truck full of explosives to kill the 5 pirates around it and having the truck itself pirouette through the air and wedge itself as a usable walkway.

:lol

Cause I didn't like Gears 1.

I gave it a shot, but the cover and shooting mechanics to me were pretty bad imo and it didn't click with me.
I had no satisfaction with shooting enemies either.

If this is an actual question, I didn't rush to buy Gears 2, because I bought my 360 for Gears 1 (and a few other games like Burnout Revenge), and I didn't feel Gears 1 delivered. I didn't like the campaign very much. It felt disjointed, the difficulty levels seemed unbalanced (Casual too easy, Hardcore too hard), the story was really odd, and even the gameplay -- while fun -- had serious issues, such as the enemy AI tactics being really annoying and clashing with the controls up-close. Multiplayer was pretty bad.

That said, a lot of people I trust say Gears 2 campaign is far superior to Gears 1 campaign. I'll get this. But I have such a backlog of games from end of 2008 that it'll be a while. Basically, it's a great time to be a gamer.

What would you have done to improve the cover system and the shooting mechanics, and bring them up to the "high quality" standard you have in mind?

Spend your entire game learning set mechanics, and then use none of them at all and blast the fucker like four times with the dawn? I mean it didn't even fucking fight back, it just sat there.

Not strictly true, it can and will kill you if you are absolutely fucking awful.

I died on my first attempt at that boss, mostly because I had no idea what to do. He smacks your helicopter about and will eventually knock you out the air. Not my proudest moment.

Although I did do it on my second attempt. Hooray!

Played it, and hated SP. Loved Gears 1's SP, but Gears 2 has one big stupid design decision that has made me never touch it again:

Razorhail
Razorhail segment was slightly annoying. A few times I didn't know I was being hit by it until it was too late. Beats the hell out of the Kryll segment in Gears 1 though.

Gears 2 kicked ass but I kind of regret the purchase. Never liked the multiplayer and while the campaign is amazing, I no longer have a co-op partner like I did for Gears 1 so the whole experience was short lived for me. I could have rented the game and got my fill of it.

so you are absolutely awful? ;)

I just saw it and kept shooting it... it certainly didn't do anything to my helicopter, it just sort of roared a lot and looked all in pain and shit as it got fucked.

I have no idea why I haven't played Gears 2 yet.

I played through the whole of Gears 1 on Launch day and got that "I played on Emergence day" wallpaper.
I bought Gears 2 at Launch too, and it's still sat on my 360 in it's untouched packaging.

I admit to not really using my 360 much any more, but Fable 2 had me playing for a bit.

I was the first time I attempted it!:D

I dunno, I just had no idea what to do. I was busy watching the beast transmogrify to pay attention to what was being said by the other characters. When the battle started I opened fire at the big tentacles on the floor rather than his body, and a short while later I was dead. I suppose I figured that there had to be more to that battle to "Aim at monster and hold down RT for several seconds".

I haven't played Gears 2 yet because I no longer own a 360. When I re-buy one later down the road Gears 2, Fable 2, and Ninja Gaiden 2 will be the first games I purchase and play. I loved the originals of all 3.

That's basically the whole game.

I rented it the first day. The gameplay in campaign is nothing special, and the online gameplay was a mess (matchmaking took forever) and gameplay itself was so slow, awkward and unsatisfying.

Give me Shadowrun or COD4 over GoW anyday.

I just didn't like how they worked. I'm no connoisseur :lol

Gears 2 is no doubt an amazing game, but I think it lacks the impact of Gears 1. While I think Gears 2 SP campaign is more creative in its levels, I actually felt the original Gears was a funner SP experience. The levels in Gears 2 are cool ideas
(the worm, the sinking city, the entire "take it to the enemy's turf" type of setting)
but somehow I don't think they really offered a lot of variety in the combat. I feel Gears 1 SP delivered more hectic firefights and more variety in setting and approach.

Gears of War 1 had a very short honeymoon period. I loved the campaign, Co-Op, and even multiplayer for a few weeks. Then the exploits started. I was willing to put up with host advantage and the crazy powerful shotty because I could fight back with the glorious grenade tag. After they nerfed the tag, but left the shotty alone, I moved on to better games. When I see community reaction to this sequel, that the MP may even be poorer than before... I just see no reason to Jump back in.

I hate the kryll segments in Gears 1, but I feel as though they had some consistency on how far you could go in the dark before you died. With the razorhail segment, playing split screen, one player would make it from shed to shed fine, but the other player, following the same path with the same speed, would die a foot out.

I really enjoyed the worm segment prior to that level, but I don't see myself picking the game back up after spending an hour dying on the end segment of the razorhail level.

I have. Why haven't I played multiplayer? Because the first game's multiplayer was, by far, the laggiest thing I've ever played (and I played online FPS on 56k in the 2000's).

The second game is a better ride the first time through, but to me, because it relies so much on crazy scripted events, seems less exciting the second time through than did the first.

for me, the guns were just boring. my favorite was the semi-auto rifle thing (Hammerburst?) -- it's the only one that felt like it packed a punch, but sometimes it didn't really cut it so i had to use other weapons. i prefer more dynamic firing cones for automatic weapons (ala counter-strike and another game i won't mention). in gears, it's just point and shoot -- hope bullets hit what you're pointing at.

Pft. I'm trying to sell my copy of Gears of War 2. Just simply not interested after beating it, just like the first game.

My only big complaint is some of the vehicular sections - the spice to mix up and add variety - were pretty lame and the ending was fucking terrible. If you hated the boss in the first game, you'll despise the one here. Holy fuck who thought of that thing? Spend your entire game learning set mechanics, and then use none of them at all and blast the fucker like four times with the dawn? I mean it didn't even fucking fight back, it just sat there.
I always thought the "final boss" was the fight with Skorge and his Hydra. After that, it felt like the game was just busting its load all over the place. The fight with the lambent whateveritscalled was like the last few drops, the final shudder. The big dude in the middle was just taking it, taking it all from Marcus and Dom, just drowning in it, a manifestation of the massive jizz-in-my-pants excitement of the final act.

To me, it felt like, instead of a denoument, the game just had an hour-long climax. It was exciting, it was heavy, and I thought it made sense.

Don't have XBL Gold, don't want to pay 60 bucks for it, Had fun playing the first game co-op but really don't have the urge to play the 2nd game all that much.

Waiting for Title Update 3, until then I will continue to play the superior (when it comes to multiplayer that is) Gears of War 1.

Because I was dissapointed in the original. After the whole experience listening to the ending "song" I felt like someone spitting on my face and mocking me for wasting my money.

Note that I was hyped for it. Got it on release.

Didn't give a shit about the sequel since it was announced.

I finished GoW1 like 6 times alone

I still have to play GoW2 a second time, is just a pretty almost on-rails campaign, it doesn't have the same guerilla warfare feeling of the first where you needed to pin-point the enemies and make your way to advance.

Is the same case of H2, but overall GoW2 is a better sequel than H2, just because the last level.

I'll probably rent it to play through the campaign at some point, but there's no reason for me to buy it as the multiplayer sounds terrible.

Co-op:ed it with a friend in one sit and then played horde on hardcore with four comrades and "beat" it. Great game with a nice pacing.

I was excited for the first one when it came out and honestly it was a let down to me. I think its just not my type of game. Therefore I dont think it would be smart of me to pay 60 dollars for the second one.

I realized why I keep coming back. All my buddies play it so we get some great 5 v 5 or 4 v 4 matches going. Also, the body damage never gets old to me. It sounds odd but the satisfaction in a headshot or watching a guy's legs fly off from a well placed shotgun blast are timeless.

I might play it soon, because i just now gave it away as a wedding gift. Yes, i am that awesome. :D

I finished it. Look at my gamertag. I wouldn't recommend it. I hated the campaign, and there are better MP options out there.

The enemies are not really smart. Their cover options are all scripted. You can always predict them the second time through. The damage feedback isn't on par with other games. Once you kill them, they perform and overdone dying animation that hardly ever correlates with how you shoot them. There is a huge difference between a game with good shooting that feels right and Gears 1 & 2.

bought the collector edition it is still plastic wrapped :(. Have too much fun playing Rockband 2 since november, everything else has taken a big delay, Bought a lot of games in november / december including gears 2, Prince of persia, Fable 2, Mirror's edge , resistance 2, fallout 3 and some more .everything is on hold since then , can't stop playing the drums on RB2 and don't want to start another game since the RB2 disc is always looking at me .... Hope to play it this summer with all the rest of the back log. There is only a couple of games that interest me till then (RE5 and Killzone 2) But I'm sure I will buy them and set them aside ....

What is that?

I was playing other games at its release. After I finished those games up, I already knew about the broken multiplayer and decided to move onto other games.

I'll consider buying it if TU3 really fixes everything as promised. Then I'll try to find it new for a cheap price, I suppose.
