Why i am excited for No Man's Sky

I have the same background in interest/fascination about space and astronomy as you.

However, the problem I have with NMS is that it appears to break any illusions on screen that the awesome concept and idea creates in mind. To me it appears to be ridden with "shortcuts" that will stop me from building the momentum necessary for an emotional release.

I'm sure I'll love NMS2 though when they finally have the necessary means to build and realize some of its potential.

Any chance of this being the Star Control III we all wish we had? :)

Deep space exploration, sentient alien life, one inter-galactic quest?

I simply don't believe that quote that 90% of planets are devoid of life. I feel like they already revised that statement to something along the lines of a good number of planets will be harsh environments with little life. They have showed us a video with several planets from one solar system for example, and all had life to some degree, so unless that system had 50 planets and they only chose the five that had life, or that solar system was an incredible anomaly, I don't think the quote is accurate any more, if it ever was.

It's fine by me though. It would be very boring to land on ten planets and only find life on an average of one.

What they showed in the video's was more of a showcase and a little bit closer to the center of the universe but it was showing what if you find life.

Based on what scientist have found in our world well there could be life somewhere in the universe but we simply don't know for sure.

So far we only found planets that are similar to mars or Jupiter or maybe earth like planets it is still speculation so yeah it could be that 90% are planets with no life just being giant gas, water planets for example.

When you think of it..we are also a mistake but here we are because natural selection in some sort and we as a species have conscious that we know that our solar system is bigger and even more bigger in other galaxy's.

As a human species we know in our deepest thoughts we are all made of stardust of everything that evolved in a billion years.

Oh I love thinking about these kinds of questions/ mysteries too, I just think Hello Games have rightly decided not to prioritise realism over fun, and if they really only used their advanced, procedural ai system on 10% of planets then they wouldn't be doing that.

Said in previous post you can look it up..when YOU find a new life form..you discovered it and you claim it when you find a animal that is unique because nobody else found it..YOU discovered it.

There will be a database where you can upload on what you have found and that is so unique because you can share it with your friends who are playing also but they have found planets with no life just hostile places or earth like planets with only land, water and that's it for example.

Well we will see in a few short weeks whether that is the case. If it is, then I have to say the game has been misrepresented in every single demonstration... I don't see why the naming of the unique species that you personally discovered wouldn't be interesting even if you basically find life almost every time you touch down a planet, as has been the case in every video demonstration so far.

I love space and the final frontier! Always been a big fan of the space program and generally space related things. However, I don't think the game is going to live up to the expectations people have. Cautiously optimistic. The game hype and idea kinda remind me of spore which looked like it would be the game of all time but it wasn't. I see some similarities in the ideas that the game has for generating worlds and creatures, hopefully its better than spore!

I think its funny how they talk about procedurally generated wildlife yet Ive seen the same 4 basic animal types in every single trailer they've released.

Oh theres the 4 legged dinosaur thing, theres the little 2 legged badger thing, theres the weird deer looking thing.

Worse yet they had a trailer a few months ago where the guy was on a planet that was like -160 degrees c and there was a goofy dinosaur thing walking around.

I just honestly dont share anyones enthusiasm over this game.

There's also a giant Jörmungandr-like fucking snake. Sean has stated many times that they're purposely hiding the more exotic creatures and showing "normal" bipedal ones to the press.

Nice try though.

Nice try but like i said in the first line of my thread..

Look there are dozens of threads now and the most common people who come in and say 'what do you do' ? Are to me the people who don't inform themself or not even bother to search it on the internet with dozens of footage and interviews.

Educate yourself..

It doesn't really work that way for NMS, well in particular with terrain generation.

The terrain is generated through mathematical noise, understandable by the computer but not by us. And also why the data is small, it's numbers on the disc. All that you see is generated on the fly and not stored anywhere.

With the image below (you can see it better in the video about 30 seconds in), the terrain has hills and tube-like rocks coming out of the ground, can you spot a pattern?

Sean describes the creation as chaotic, it's up to the point where he doesn't know how new algorithms and mathematical patterns are going to change the universe.
One thing this trailer screams to me is the lack of pop in that everybody complained about. That scene in particular nails that home.

I went back and watched the trailer again, but at .5 speed just so I could see any. I saw barely any other than shadow formation, but hell, every console game does that.

That's intriguing. I still want to try this game only because it reminds me of Star Voyager on the NES in a way.

Also note how the animals have nearly the same type of behaviors, including walking and scurrying. These slight variations along with copy pasta of the animals all across the freaking planet (remember, only one biome is allowed per planet) destroys illusions of "discovery." What you really discover are the game algorithms.

But, see, to certain people - like myself - they're all worth exploring. There is a certain subset of people that just refuses to acknowledge that aspect.
How can you say that though? Let's say the first 30-40 planets you land on are exactly the same, mostly empty and have nothing of interest on them. What would make you want to explore more of them only to find out they are mostly the same with a really cool one every 50 planets or so.

The build that HG has been using in demonstrations is not the final one. It is edited so that life is more abundant. The game that ships will be 90% barren. And when has a videogame trailer ever captured the minute to minute gameplay? The whole point of them is to be sizzle reels to get and/or keep you excited. They're gonna show off the good stuff instead of the 5 minute trip in between barren planets.

I just hope at least half of those 18 quintillion planets are worth exploring.

Just like that guy who gave up work to search for Pokemon, I'm going to give up work and visit every single planet.....

Not really, :( but shame I am not rich enough to just spend all my time playing games.

*amazing post*

This. All of this. I do so very much expect eurojank in this game. It would honestly be disappointed if it did have that feel of being stretched a little too thin, trying to do something crazy that isn't really feasibly, but with a little jank, you can get close enough.

And it also might end up being a shitty game. :)

And I would even be okay with this. No Man's Sky is a game that shouldn't exist. But it does and I'm going to buy it. How could I not? It looks crazy. But the judge is still ou on if crazy is good here. It might be, it might not.

Why? Minecraft was great for exploring a world being procedurally created. I didn't care for the building part.

I had one time with minecraft a few years ago i did the building stuff but off course also exploration..i build a massive massive railway underground.

Went from above level to the depths and beneath oceans it was huge and long i think when i made it with 2 stops on both sides because you could go back to the 'main city' we made. Around 10 minutes top..discovered amazing deep caves with lava and stuff. Yeah discovering that was pretty cool and all my friends liked it had put a lot of effort in it.

Uhh, the math is the same for every minecraft world too, but each of them start with a different seed to process with that math.

Does NMS not do something similar? If I start a new game is there always going to be System X, Y units from start, with exactly the same everything? That would be disappointing.

Yep, the same 18 quintillion planets. Very disappointing ...

100% OP. I don't throw around the term 'dream game' lightly but NMS has that sort of potential for me. It might take playing the game for years, but I will bask in the glow of a binary sunset on an ocean world and weep, weep at its beauty.

I dont really drink but for this game I will get a nice skotch or whiskey and just savour the experience while exploring space.. Wow

Like for you, No Man's Sky is a dream game for me. Minecraft scratched that exploration itch, but this game takes it to a WHOLE other level.
This is exactly how I feel about it as well. Exploration and discovery are fantastic digital escapes and this should be the ultimate! Until we get NMS II hehehe.

Damn OP. That was super nice and heart-full. I lost my interest in the game because of the overexpousere, but reading you, make me think that you are 100% right. For fans of space, exploration and AWE, I think this game is a no-brainer.

You are cool OP. Cool dude.

Yo Huber was saying on Easy Allies "what if when you all get to the center of the universe, that's when the game really begins! It serves as some sort of hub where you can meet up with people and multiplayer begins." Because technically everyone should be at the center of the universe. That's where everyone is headed.

I thought that idea was awesome.

Zero idea what to expect once we get to the center, other than the game to really open up. Little over 3 weeks now!

Everyone starts on the outer edge of the galaxy but not on the same planet so everyone will have their own unique experience whilst playing, different environment conditions, different animals, different materials available etc

Thank you very much makes me happy to see posts like this..most posts of me get buried in threads like no man's sky and i have a passion for it so i thought i will make a thread instead.

Somewhere I remember Hello Games saying it's gonna use a completely different seed for the retail game. Balari V and such won't even exist in the game we all eventually play. That's probably where we're gonna see the spread of life the game will actually have.

And they said even the lifeless planets still might have interesting geographical features or lots of mineral resources. Maybe not everyone who visits these planets is in it for exploration. Maybe some will just be looking for a planet to find a good source of platinum. Again, the promotion and trailers have overwhelmingly advertised the exploration element of the game, and we've seen comparatively little fighting and trading, and have only recently started to see the resource economy. I'm interested in seeing what the "Fighting" and "Trading" trailers show. That kind of stuff might appeal to a completely different kind of gamer.

That's the thing about these space games. They tend to try to appeal to several types of players at once. The exploration is for people who like traveling from place to place and seeing interesting new things. The fighting is for people who like combat and upgrading to get better weapons. The trading and mining are for people who like earning points and filling up numbers. Each game tends to execute one better than the others. Elite Dangerous mostly focuses on combat and maybe trading. Star Citizen looks like it's mostly going to be combat. NMS might fall into the trap of emphasizing exploration to the detriment of the other things. There might be people who find one really good trade route and decide to just grind that for 20 hours.

Nope thank you. Because of this thread or for better words your OT, I pre-order the game. I read a lot of salt and yes I was part of that salt, i.e., "the game is going to suck, what do you do besides explore, No way it can live the hype, etc." but I was wrong, exploration is the key. Damn you are an explorer of the universe what is cooler than that? I don't know. People are saying if is worth to explore planets with 0 life a barren soil and I say OF COURSE IS WORTH IT. Damn we are pioneers. Again, thank you for boost interest in one of my passions (astronomy).

Balari V will still exist in our hearts even it doesn't exist in the final game.

That, or someone names an Ice Planet after it as one of the discoveries.

Though wouldn't be nice to try to name an ice planet "Balari V" and a prompt comes up that says "Name cannot be used, already exists"

All I need from this game to be satisfied, is to be able to take off in my spaceship, fly to another planet and land. I don't need deep gameplay mechanics, or forced story points.

My imagination will fill in any blanks.
