Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus (Video)

You guys should digress and look at some of the Youtube comments.

There's a HUGE reason why the poem's video has over 6 million views and this hateful trash only has 145,000. Out of those 145,000 I would estimate half were people disagreeing with what "The Amazing Atheist" says. So actually he only got 72500 supporting views. So when he says "Everyone HATES Jesus/Religion/God" he is hugely mistaken. The world is over 70% religious. Meaning there are more than 4,900,000,000 people alive today who believe in religion. 4.9 Billion vs. 72.5 thousand.

All I see is a guy who doesn't understand the definition of religion.

I think he got it pretty alright, perhaps not our specific definitions of religion and what we view it as, but ffs it's a poem, it's generally sound.

I kinda rolled my eyes at the jesus and sins part, that's nice and all, but whatever, has no real basis. This is still a good step away from 'rules' and just plain 'being good' instead.

But the OP guy hates religion, so therefore 4.9 billion people hate the original video, and an enemy's enemy is a friend, so therefore 4.9 billion people like the ahteist video.

You're throwing around a load of assumptions about everything here that mean nothing at all. And hardly anyone in here is talking about the atheist response video either!

How many of you have read (the entirety) of the Bible?

Just curious.

I have. The bible is one of the strongest atheist weapons.

These people are so comical it's hard to muster up any reason to respond to them.

He was quoting someone else's comment on an amazing atheist youtube vid.

He clearly said the church, but either way he meant a church. That combined with everything else he listed that he loves constitutes religion.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Why does it matter if he put the word "the" in front of it

He still means the body of believers. You can tear down a building, but the church still exists

The sad reality of these folks is that they just go to some other un-church with the exact same material being preached by a not-priest.

How many of you have read (the entirety) of the Bible?

Just curious.

I have. I read through it and then start over from the beginning. Going through it now with the Matthew Henry commentary.

I wish more Christians would read it from start to finish. It may not be in the order it was written, but it is arranged in a way that gives you a better understanding of the timeline of events.

The further away people can get from religion in general the better. The masses won't just drop the shit, all of it, and move on. They will cling to certain attributes and beliefs (sin, jesus etc).

It's still a step in the right direction, and many people liking and spreading the video means the general consensus is the same, too. Christianity 2.0 is welcomed.

Basically the bible stripped of all the bullshit for the most important bullshit, but with a good and not hateful message (against sex, homosexuals etc etc).

It's getting harder for each generation to actually believe and support the christianity, honestly, and this is a sign of that, and hopefully the coming change in the future generations.

Not religion in its current form and meaning. Currently it is basically a facade for most people
He didn't really care for it while he was around, either. Most of his interactions with the Pharisees are evidence of that. I think that's basically what this video is trying to describe, the difference between extremely legalistic "religious" people and those who realize we are all sinners and strive to follow Jesus' example of love.

It's weird how people like Buckethead never seem to notice that many atheists come from religious backgrounds or are just curious about different subjects.

I tried reading TWILIGHT once, too.

This sounds like something that could be written by an angry sophomore in high school. Then again a lot of poetry sounds like that. I'm also an anti-theist so I resent the idea of a God itself rather than just religion so I can't take the video's points seriously. It's nice fodder for rebellious teens who don't want to go to church anymore though so I suppose it's a good thing. However he still hasn't taken the extra step and realizing the bible itself is bullshit, not just the people who preach it.

Hah. That's what it all come down to. Church is boring!

Man I hated to go to Church on Sundays as a kid. Funny thing is, my Dad probably hated it more than me, he just had to make face.

This is what the video was getting at

Legalism in the church today leads to most of the terrible things that most dislike about "religion"

And the fact that there are more believers than non believers does not make your super natural and illogical beliefs any more believable. The thinking man is always an atheist. Use your brain and analyze the claims of religion. It makes no sense in the context of this massive universe we live in, where science tells is we evolved from the mud, and our planet sits in a generic solar system in a generic galaxy. There is nothing special about us. The evidence all points in one direction, and it is not in the direction of religion holding any truth.

I cannot believe that anyone could read the entirety of the bible without going insane. It is incredibly uninteresting.

I cannot believe that people would base their opinions on other peoples opinions instead of forming their own opinion after actually reading the Bible.

What did he get right? Did you even read the definition you posted. He acts like following Jesus and worshiping him, isn't religion. It is. He even goes on that he loves the church, he loves the bible and believes in sin.

Yeah it's a poem and makes no sense, it contains a lot of logical fallacies and contradictions.

He just preaches a less harmful religion. It's still preaching a religion though.
If you're going to get technical about it, sure. But it's obvious the 'religion' that he is talking about, as in religion as an institution rather than a belief.

Obviously, it's still a religion, but in the context of the video and his words, I think we can understand what he means.

What a disgusting message.

Yep, and a lot of Christians understand this better than anyone else. My wife has tons of facial piercings and tattoos and has had quite a few negative experiences with various churches because of it, so I can definitely relate to the message that this guy (and Jesus himself) is advocating.

What a disgusting message.
Hmm?

He's being funny.

Anyhow, does Jesus ever say in the Bible he's against Homosexuals? Love is love, and it's not selective. Damn crazy right wingers.

It's pretty sickening that the Republicans have taken Christianity as their own brand. Can't fucking stand it. It's bullshit. You can be Christian without being a nutjob.

I agree. I'm a Christian and read the Bible in its entirety multiple times. I'm on my yearly reread right now.

The Old Testament really gets to me sometimes. Look at this passage:

Exodus 4:18-26

So Moses went back home to Jethro, his father-in-law. “Please let me return to my relatives in Egypt,” Moses said. “I don’t even know if they are still alive.”
“Go in peace,” Jethro replied.

Before Moses left Midian, the Lord said to him, “Return to Egypt, for all those who wanted to kill you have died.”

So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey, and headed back to the land of Egypt. In his hand he carried the staff of God.

And the Lord told Moses, “When you arrive back in Egypt, go to Pharaoh and perform all the miracles I have empowered you to do. But I will harden his heart so he will refuse to let the people go. Then you will tell him, ‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son. I commanded you, “Let my son go, so he can worship me.” But since you have refused, I will now kill your firstborn son!’”

On the way to Egypt, at a place where Moses and his family had stopped for the night, the Lord confronted him and was about to kill him. But Moses’ wife, Zipporah, took a flint knife and circumcised her son. She touched his feet with the foreskin and said, “Now you are a bridegroom of blood to me.” (When she said “a bridegroom of blood,” she was referring to the circumcision.) After that, the Lord left him alone.

God was going to kill Moses, his chosen leader, because he was negligent in circumcising his son in a timely manner. Wow.

I cannot believe that people would base their opinions on other peoples opinions instead of forming their own opinion after actually reading the Bible.

I give up at around the point where it says fortune tellers should be stoned to death. It's ancient book written for ancient people.

Ummmm ... Jesus is a real person but most of his exploits in the Bible are probably a work of fiction. Stating you love Jesus should be fairly obvious because as a character of the Bible he was a pretty upstanding dude who wanted tolerance and acceptance. That is like saying we should all aspire to be like Frodo; someone who can overcome the temptation of supreme power and take the problems of the world on our backs.

Do not want to get off on a rabbit trail, but you obviously do not understand the fundamental difference between the Old Testament and the New Testament.

The OT was Law and the NT is Grace.

For more understanding please see:
Law and Gospel
Why do Christians not obey the Old Testaments commands to kill

If it would help you then you should consider just starting with the NT. The only purpose of the OT today is to show us how guilty we are of multiple sins and point us towards the redemption found in Jesus and the NT.

My first point of contention is how do we even know if Jesus existed as described in the Bible as the man in the video automatically assumes he does?

Second, Jesus allegedly invented this doctrine of infinite torture for finite crimes, which is infinitely unjust which technically makes his message worse than anything preached in the Old Testament.

There's only a certain sect of christians that believe that you burn forever in hell for all eternity

The biblical view of what hell is says that you are burned up in hell and cease to exist (Die) which is referred to in the bible as the second death.

That's pretty much how I see it. Our ancestors deified good/great men all the time. Hell, it STILL HAPPENS:

I understand that whatever is more appropriate for the era is what people will claim is the "truer" , "more righteous" way of life. Previous editions of doctrine always somehow become outdated when society advances.

While i see that the message has many problems, i have to say that the video is actualy very well done.

His mix of rap and poetry have a good feel about it

A cool version of this is the "I don't have anything against god, my problem is with his fan club" ...

He is against organized religion, not religion =P
He believes in jesus and the bible, but not in the pope and priests

Would be like ... he likes Tolkien, Elves and the Hobbits, but hates RPG conventions xD

...and if my memory is correct, jesus choose the first pope, but he ignores this part too xD

The Christian "Church" (and certainly the early church) are simply those that follow and believe in Jesus.

Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

The Church is not an institution or organization, it is a group of like mined people who come together. The Catholic Church, or any other big organized Christian church is a product of man, not God.

The part about he believes in Jesus and the Bible, but not in the pope and priests, is problematic, since what today the Bible "is" , and who most Christians believe that Jesus is, was set in motion by popes and priest and cardinals under a request by a Roman Emperor at Nicaea, as well as other Ecumenical Councils over time. The primary objective was to standardize the beliefs to produce unified church, primarily for political reasons.

What?

..What? This is the stupidest post I've ever read on GAF.

I'm sort of conflicted with this video. On one hand, I understand the message and it's intended audience. I feel that this video is targeted to more established religious institutions of Christianity (Catholicism, Methodists, Lutherans, etc). It's a pro non-denominational/universal church message. However, there are hypocrisies in any establishment. As many atheist posters have mentioned, the sources may be different but the message is the same.

I'm not much of a message person. Don't preach but live. If your life is influential in any way, the message is relayed.

Presumption, ad-nominem, and generalization.
We're off to a great start.

I'm all for rational discussion about the existence of God or lack thereof and the percieved contemptible parts of the Bible.

I merely take issue with posters in this and many other threads who are incorrect on basics of Christian theology yet claim to have knowledge on the topic when it's quite obvious they're going off of circumstantial evidence or an opinion of some other party and have never read or never read thoroughly, the source document itself.

The guy in this video goes on to say that Jesus is the cure for Christianity. Can't we just be rid with both? That way we don't need the disease and we don't need the cure.

I'm in the "live don't preach" boat as well. If you want an estimation of how many people didn't receive the message in church just try and exit the parking lot of a large church after it has been released. It is pure hell dealing with the amount of centrally located assholes trying their best to be the first ones out of the lot.

You no different from a Jediist telling people counter to them that they haven't watched the Star Wars series closely enough. You don't need to know the exact ins and outs of a system, to discuss it. Saying that you're wrong about there not being an invisible untouchable pink unicorn in front of you at all times because you haven't read IUPU Books 1 - 5 doesn't make a lick of sense.

He says Christianity is not religion, and he hates religion, so he hates everything that isn't Christianity. That sounds about right, most religious people hate other religions, it's a requirement of being a believer.

Nice commercial for your product. Christianity isn't religion, because it's THE TRUTH, so become a Christian!

The guy in this video goes on to say that Jesus is the cure for Christianity. Can't we just be rid with both? That way we don't need the disease and we don't need the cure.

He is mistaken. Jesus is Christianity. Also, you equating Christianity to a disease is like homophobic individuals equating homosexuality as a genetic disorder. Both have no place here.

This video is a way of saying "My religion has a lot of bad crap, but it also has a lot of good crap. I'm against the bad crap, but I'm for the good crap. And now I've separated those and I only stand for the good crap."

Well, you can't do that. You can't say "my belief is awesome. It's just a shame some people misuse it". No, that is a part of your belief. And when you step aside from all the crap your belief or religion, or however you want to split hears semantically, makes, you cut ties with the responsibilities of the shit your belief or religion does, and think it's OK.

He says Christianity is not religion, and he hates religion, so he hates everything that isn't Christianity. That sounds about right, most religious people hate other religions, it's a requirement of being a believer.

Exactly! He even says
"Religion is man searching for God. Christianity is God searching for man." It's sets the whole fucked up premiss of this video in the right light.

Let's not play word games. Jesus was a person and Christianity is a set of beliefs and traditions about him.
