Why in the world are Wiis still hard to find?

Gigglepoo said:
Early on in the system's life, it seems consumers are ok buying second rate games. That is why Capcom is devoting so many of their resources to Resident Evil 5 while working on a smaller Resident Evil (UC) for the Wii. It's a much smaller investment and will still sell well, so they are able to put time and money into RE5.

What if UC ends up being the better game? And better-selling for that matter?

The topic took a bit of a detour, but not too long ago I overheard a Best Buy employee tell a lady that they're out of Wii because Retirement homes are buying it all up. :lol

Wii owners like bad/old games? Have you played Harry Potter? I can't imagine anyone spending $50 on this game. To spend $60 (for the X360 or PS3 versions) would just be ridiculous. And though I said RE4 was the best game I had played since OoT, I have no interest in the Wii version. I have already played through this game. I would much rather have a new experience.
Well Mario Party 8 is the fastest selling in the series..

Seriously? I don't remember any of these official pack-ins. Are you talking about store-specific promotions, or actual Ninty freebies?

Either way, they don't compare to a free title at launch, which is entirely uncommon. That hasn't been done in ages.

Ninty freebies.

Oh, it could be. Anything could happen. Catan is one of my favorite games for the X360 and it took a lot less time than something crappy like Lost Planet. But the point is, the best people at Capcom are working on RE5. It's their main project right now. They are devoting a lot of time and a lot of money to make this the best game they can. RE:UC will probably be fun, but it does not have the budget or talent behind it. It's a second tier game for Capcom, something that can help finance their bigger projects.

My point is, these are the type of 3rd party games we are seeing for the Wii. The main teams and the main series are on the X360/PS3 while smaller teams with a smaller budget are working on Wii games.

I'm not sure what the point of this statement is. First of all, it's a Nintendo game. Second, it isn't that good. I missed MP3, 6 and 7, but 8 was the worst of the ones I had played. It was actually boring. Even my girlfriend, who really gets into games like Wii Sports and Raving Rabbids, was bored out of her mind playing this game. The fact that it is selling so well does not make me more confident about future games.

Gigglepoo thinks that developers will start the same sort of projects in 2007 and 2008 as they did in summer 2006.

Who's in charge of RE:UC? I thought it was the director of the main games of the RE series? I don't know my Capcom personnel that well, but that's the impression I got from NP.

Astrolad is one of my favorite posters. Not only is he sarcastic in a much less obvious way than the rest of GAF, but he also made a post a while ago that introduced me to The Vocabula Review, which is super kewl.

So, here's a bit of the old anecdotal. Last Friday a Best Buy opened not far from my house. I stopped in at about 2 in the afternoon, and inquired about how many Wii systems they had in stock. The reply that I got was that they had sold the entire 35 they had been allocated just minutes before. So that's 35 systems in 4 hours.

Yasuhiro Seto is the director of UC. I couldn't find out what his previous games were on Google. It looks like Shinji Mikami, who did RE4, is behind RE5 as well.

As to your first point, I do believe this trend will continue. From what we have heard (concerning games like Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Oblivion, Saint's Row and others) big budget 3rd party games do make a profit on the X360. I don't see any reason why these elite teams will shift development towards the Wii when lower budget games are selling so well.

I really don't think it's much like Wii Sports or Rayman for Wii. It's a board game primarily, that in itself is going to bore a lot of people. Plus the length of time transitioning between board and mini-game is annoying. I think it's one of the better mario party games though.

I think Mikami is not involved in Resident Evil 5...
He's working on his own studio..
Maybe cvxfreak can clear this doubt, but as far as I remember he hasn't worked in anything Resident Evil-related since he finished RE4 on GameCube.

Anyway, creating a Wi is difficult (and tedious) because is by hand (one by one)...
They have to:
-Take 2 GameCubes
-Open them
-Remove both chipsets
-Put them together with duct-tape
-Put the Wii white case
-Glue it

Stuff like Godfather and RE4 is already better than the absolute shit that came around at launch. There are at least half a dozen exclusives that have been announced in the last few weeks, and it's not E3 yet.

A market leading Wii will create a competitive environment for publishers. They are going to want a piece of that pie, and they won't do that if they are releasing shit alongside shit. They will want to make games that people will want to buy over their competitors' games.

I'm sure you will respond that they will only make minigames or something, but normal games are selling great on Wii, so that doesn't hold much water.

Gigglepoo said:
There aren't any 3rd party Wii games I'm looking forward to. The best 3rd party game that is currently out that I have played is Kororinpa, which I wouldn't buy. I'm sure RE4 is a great game but I simply do not play remakes. There are too many new experiences out there to replay a game I've already finished. I'm looking forward to the big Nintendo games, but there just isn't anything else that is catching my eye.

I'm going to E3 next week. I'm excited to talk to 3rd parties about their future plans. I really don't think you'll see many top tier games announced for the Wii. Remember, this was Nintendo's baby. I don't think a lot of developers even care for motion controls. You'll see the cash ins and ports since they make money, but games like Resident Evil 5 and Metal Gear Solid 4 will not be coming to the Wii.

The good thing is, you can bookmark this post and see in just one week if I'm wrong. It's pretty immidiate, eh? I don't think you'll see top tier development teams announcing exclusive games for the Wii next week.

I bet you will never consider No More Heroes, Rygar, Dragon Blade and Soul Calibur Legends etc. Top Tier games.

I don't know much about Rygar or Dragon Blade.

No More Heroes is an example of an artist having a vision and going with it. It is an example of what I expect on the Wii. It is not a 2nd tier game. It is not a cheap spinoff. The Wii was chosen for its tech advantage to make the game Suda wanted to make. This is a Wii game I am looking forward to since I loved K7.

SCL is the opposite though. It's a cheap spinoff. Soul Calibur 4 is going to the X360 and PS3. That's Namco's big game, not a spinoff.

Shit, people like Gigglepoo on here just sound like broken records.

I couldn't care less if Team A is working on something or if Team B is working on something. I mean, it's one thing to really look forward to RE5, but where's the sense in only looking towards that and not RE: UC? As a fan of RE games, why would somebody not check out both?

We already know RE: UC isn't going to be anything like the Gun Survivor games... We know it's supposedly over 20 hours... We know there's destructable environments, different weapons, and more... We know there's multiple scenarios and possibly co-op...

Why not look forward to that game on its own rights?

Why say Dewy is insignificant compared to MGS4? Why does Konami make anything outside of MGS games for Sony platforms then?

Why ignore the fact that Namco's Dream Team is working on SCLegends just because SCIV is in the works?

Hell, it's quite possible that somebody can pull a Sonic, where the Wii game is much, much better than the PS3/360 version.

Ironically, the "best team" is the one working in Legends...or so says Namco.

Also, regarding Resident Evil 5:

Keiji Inafune, who served as promotional producer for Resident Evil 2 and executive producer for Resident Evil 4's PlayStation 2 version, is overseeing the project.[5] In February of 2007, members of Capcom’s Clover Studio were also called upon to help develop the game. However, many developers from the studio have moved on to work on the upcoming Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, which will debut for the Wii.

I went to a game store and the phone rang about 7 times while I was there. Every person was asking about the Wii.

The hardware is selling like cake at a fat camp but how is the software doing?

Nintendo is not that bad in snatching up exclusives you know, they had quite a few when there consoles were selling well. Now that the Wii is selling, there in a much better position to get exclusive big games from publishers all over the world. Look at how Sony is losing exclusives now, and look at Nintendo getting more each week. Its just a matter of time before the Final Fantasies, Resident evils or Silent Hills get announced.

Using the Wiimote as the flash light? Interesting.

And people like you don't?

Nintendo has always produced my favorite consoles but the Wii seems to be lagging far behind at this point. I've played all the relevant Wii games thus far (except for EA games and RE4) and nothing has really grabbed me. I am still not convinced motion controls are good for gaming. And when I look at the future, with only three known Nintendo games (Mario, Smash and Metroid) and very few 3rd party games (Heroes), I don't have a lot of faith.

Yes, it sells a lot, but I don't really care. It seems like the biggest and best 3rd party games are still coming out for the PS3 and X360. I think that will continue until developers choose to make motion controlled games. It may be easy to force a new control method on consumers but it seems much harder to sway developers.

Believe me, I have been a Nintendo whore for longer than most of you have been playing games. But I simply do not like the direction the Wii seems headed. I hope I'm wrong. We'll see some indication of the future at E3 next week.

I know people have already posted this. But here are the direct quotes from Namco producer Jun Okubo on the Wii exclusive Soul Calibur Legends:

"Within the company, it's pretty well known that this is a dream team. We have quite a few other teams that are a bit jealous of the staff we've been able to put together for this project."

That pretty much invalidates everything Gigglepoo has posted about top tier developers working on Wii games. :lol

That's actually one of the features in the Wii version of Tomb Raider Aniversary that I am looking forward to seeing.

SCL has five lead veterans from the SC series. All we know about SC4 is that the lead programmer and I think the producer are working on that title. SCL is worth looking into if you enjoy action titles.

Anyway I can't believe wii fanboys are already championing Dragon Blade when
1. It isn't looking that great visually
2. D3? come on
3. SCL is in the same genre and looks far more worthwhile
4. That said I take back everything I've said about it if it turns out awesome.

I dunno, Gigglepoo. What sort of game are you waiting for? An instance when you say "Ah ha! This is what Nintendo meant!" Hopefully you'll find a game like that. I've already found mine; Trauma Center. If you haven't tried it, you should. It's an excellent game and justifies the Wii's idea and existence.

And, hey, it's a third party. And Atlus got me going for their games, too. I'm really interested in Odin Sphere.

I feel the same way you do about the Wii. I can't help but occasionally lament what could have been when I play some Wii games. However, the quality is indeed there. It boggles my mind that you see only 4 worthwhile or hypeworthy games in the Wii's future.

I rented Trauma Center. I couldn't consistently draw the star. It was a frustrating experience. I enjoyed it much more on my NDS. It is also another port. A port with motion controls doesn't excite me.

What I really want is for Nintendo to step up. I want them to lead the way with something new and unique. I buy all my Nintendo systems for Nintendo games and have never been let down. The Wii software seems predictable and safe at this point. Though I want Galaxy more than just about any game, nothing else is making me jump in anticipation.

Eh, that's all right, I suppose. I mean, if you already played it on the DS, there wasn't much point to playing it again on the Wii. I never got to play TC on the DS, so the Wii version was totally new to me.

Nintendo is just establishing their roster this year. Catering to the hardcore, casual, and non-gamers. Once, and if, 3rd parties pick up the slack, we'll start seeing more experimental things from Nintendo.

That's what I think, anyways.

I went to buy a Wii for my 4 yr old brother and 45 yr old dad (mom and dad still making kid, yo!) and they didnt have any! :(

I kicked the shit out of the 360 kiosk and somne punk tried to kick me out. I kicked him in the chin and left the store.

I WANT MY WII BYOOOOOTCH!

You talk like games are shitted out everytime a developer has a concept or something. Those announced 360/PS3 games were probably in production years ago. It takes time to make good games, and Wii is just 7 months old and nobody saw it coming. For all i care, just sell your Wii untill games you want hit the console. Its a better thing to do than cry about it on messageboards.

FYI, the director of RE:UC is the guy in charge of the port of the PS2 version of RE4. The creator of the series (Mikami) works for Seeds now but he is still working with Capcom as a freelance, even tho he is not the director or producer of RE5.

Even if the Wii gets the most announcements of exclusive games(it's been that way since April, btw), he'd just say they aren't compe.ling and cry "D-team", "spinoff", "cash-in", "shallow", etc.

Yeah because the N64 had so many more great games in the first year? What?

I can see your point. It's really important for game companies to release their blockbuster titles like Dragon Quest IX on a next-gen console like the PS3 and 360...Wait...

Thats okay, what about Contra IV...Damn...

But thats not the point. You're telling me that if DQIX can be announced for the DS with its user base then games like that wouldn't be on Wii if it achieves that same success?
