Why is adding milk & sugar to your coffee laughed at?

Some context that I suppose is necessary: I'm a man in my early 20s, about to finish college. I've never been a huge coffee guy until recently, but now I usually tend to start my day with a cup, or have one after dinner as a small dessert. When I drink coffee, I don't like it black. Truly, I believe it tastes bad. I like a spoonful or so of milk or half & half, as well as a packet or two of sugar. People act like this is some... pussy-move though. I like the taste! It tastes good to me, like this. Why should I suffer through a horrible cup of shit as opposed to drinking something I like!? I'm not truly offended by anyone who has an opposing view on coffee to me, but I wanna know why...

Where did it come from that the addition of milk and sugar is taboo?

I never make fun of people (to their face) about doing it. I just find that drinking a double double or higher is closer to chocolate milk than to coffee.

Who are these people you are around that criticize your coffee drinking habits?

For the record, I prefer it half and half with 1 Equal but the coffee in my office sucks. If its good beans, I can drink in black and enjoy it.

It destroys the coffee flavor, like smothering a fine steak with ketchup.

I'll drink good coffee black. Sometimes shitty coffee just hits the spot and I'll put some cream and sugar in shitty coffee. Especially if it's weak, since weak black coffee tastes like hot water.

People like to think they're superior over the smallest things. Drink it how you like. At work I usually drink with just a bit of sugar but if I order from a restaurant or make it at home I add half steamed milk and sugar. Everyone has their preferences.

speaking as a coffee snob I don't care what you put into your coffee because I don't have to drink it.

if you want to have a discussion on the finer points of making a good cup of coffee I'm here for you.

Coffee without sugar is disgusting.

How do you guys have tastebuds that enjoy something so bitter?

Actually this makes sense. I only drink Tim Hortons hung over driving home and it is so bad I don't even enjoy it. I am sure sugar and milk would ease the pain.

I drink my coffee black, but only after it has been in the pot for 6-8 hours, and then I throw some coffee ice cubes in it - made from leftover old and strong as shit black coffee. That way I can drink it quick instead of sipping. I get made fun of for it.

I would probably be better suited to drink motor oil.

Nooooo. A more apt comparison is A1 sauce. It doesn't ruin it as much as it enhances the flavor.

For me, I can only drink hot coffee black and I can only drink iced coffee with cream and sugar.

I have the opposite experience in a fair few places that serve coffee in the UK. When I order black coffee the baristas seems to think you are crazy for not wanting your drink to be 2/3 milk.

As with everything, have whatever you enjoy and don't worry about everyone else's opinion.

i'll drink coffee black if it's really good quality coffee and not brewed overly strong. When everything is perfect, coffee can have a faint natural sweetness to it and doesn't taste harsh. But most of the time I just can't reproduct perfection on that level, so I have to cut it with some half and half to get by.

However, haven't had sugar in my coffee in over ten years. Since i'm a frequent coffee drinker, it can quickly become a huge source of added sugar in your diet, so just don't do it.

Ideally I'd buy fresh whole bean coffee from a local roaster once per week and always keep my coffee at the topmost quality and freshness, that way I could do without any cream most of the time. But I'm a busy guy, and I don't live near a roaster like I used to, so I have to just do the best I can.

The best time to brew your coffee is 3 days after the roast. For the several day period following that, it will taste its very best. The quality gradually falls off after that, even when stored under good conditions. Shame really, since coffee takes so long to get into the hands of customers, most people brewing at home can never experience the coffee at its very best.

I drink my coffee with lots of milk and some sugar. I drink coffee for the caffeine, not the taste! It starts tasting good with milk and sugar. (idk, am i doing it wrong?)

Yeah, it definitely depends on the quality of coffee you're starting with. Cream and sugar is practically necessary when drinking nasty gas station coffee for example, but if you're drinking imported beans Indonesians have meticulously picked out of civet poop you better not be adding cream and sugar.

I don't drink coffee (I can't stand the taste or smell), but to me it basically says "I don't really like the thing I am drinking so I am going to make it taste less like that thing" which to me is a bit absurd.

Laughed at..... That's all that people order if you work at a fast food coffee chain. I'm lucky to get maybe 20 black coffees a day. Everyone wants double doubles, to 4 X 4s and every variation between.

The hardcore black coffee crowd are youngsters usually. Black coffee is for young men and very old men. Everyone in between enjoys it properly, as they like it.

It does overpower the flavour of the coffee, but I usually don't mind because black coffee makes my heartburn worse.

Plus, it makes shitty coffee palatable.

Is it? Never knew it was scoffed at. I mean, unless you're pouring milk and sugar into premium coffee, which would be the equivalent of making sangria with expensive wine.

Winston Wolf enjoyed his coffee with lots of cream, lots of sugar.

You don't go around disrespecting Mr. Wolf.

I put 4 sugars in my coffee. YEAH THAT'S RIGHT

I also barely ever drink coffee, so I don't worry about that being excessive :p
