Why is all gaming humour terrible?

Best+videogame+comic_b2c593_4755442.gif

Most bad humor = insular "ha ha this is a joke that only we get because we're better than those who don't get it" kinds of jokes

Most good humor = "Games and gaming culture are really fucking weird, let's poke some fun at that. We get it because we've been there."

Slight difference between the two, but you know it when you see it.
The worst examples seem to be when the artist makes themselves the focus of the comic. Occasionally it works but usually it just seems more than a little narcissistic. It becomes a vanity project rather than something made to entertain others.

Because not everyone has the same reference points also humor involves timing and an ability to read the audience ie some social skills and let's face it a lot of you lack social skills.

If your webcomic fails to be funnier than a script that randomly generates one it's time to find another creative outlet.

Holy...

That kind of sums up good humor in general. Stand up comedy is almost all poking fun at elements of life that are just weird when observed in a certain light.

Kinda like how that comic generator above is hilarious because it pokes fun at how terrible the bulk of web comics are.

Thumbs can be pretty funny at times but I don't think they do too much "gaming 'humor'."

I mean if you define gaming humour as shit sure but Nick's recent account of his Sims 4 alternate life self destructing was pretty hilarious.

A lot of internet "humor," in general is terrible, especially in the past like six years. Since that's where "video game humor," comes from for the most part a lot it it will be terrible as well.

As others have said, there are webcomics like Awkward Zombie, Castle Vidcons, and Brawl in the Family that are great.

Much of my work day is spent trying to understand the humor from the other gaming nerds around me. I'm just constantly smiling to make it seem like I thought it was funny. I would love to just tell them that it wasn't funny which might get them to think before they say anything, but would that really change them? Or would I just be an ass hole creating an awkward situation? There is a 100% chance I will never say anything.

Gotta agree with everyone who said Awkward Zombie & Brawl in the Family was probably one of the best Nintendo-related webcomics out there. I just wish I had the funds to buy the book versions. It managed to perfectly balance being funny while still being family friendly, something that I think can be hard since it can lead to "it's for everyone, but only really funny to younger audiences".

You could sell me on "most" but certainly not the hyperbole of "all".

BTW Twitter posts I've seen on GAF from the guy (or gal) with the fake Kaz Hira account have all be genuinely funny and rather terrific.

Immaturity + Nostalgia + General tone-deafness + Weird-ass sense of unity ("us gamers, huh?") = Gaming humor in general.
