Why is Bust a Groove so awesome?

I was having a ride down memory lane with my good pal, and we came across the subject of Bust a Groove, and decided that these are awesome games. And what we say goes, mind you.

Great, Fun Characters

Excellent Music

Fun Gameplay

It's so blatantly obvious that these games trump all these third-rate rhythm games out there. Samba De Amigo, Donkey Konga, Technic Beat...the list goes on, really. I would re-buy these games but they're freakin expensssssiveeee

I need my Heat and Robo-Z

I still prefer 1 > 2, mind you

I love this game (along with Gitaroo Man) and I love the music. There are some really good remixes of some of the songs for this game out there.

Bust-A-Groove is fun, but it's god awful in versus mode. It turns into a contest of "Whoever screws up first, loses."

Compared to other music games though, it ranks in there with the 3rd raters.

BUST A MOVE 3/DANCE SUMMIT 2001 = WTF:

First one was meh, second one was a lot better.

Reason being, everyone had the same input no matter what. Whatever character you picked all the inputs were the same, never changed. The hardest input was the same. Made the game terribly easy and a down right bore in versus mode.

Part two added nice features, like bonuses for getting the beat exactly right. Also if you got the beat right, the key presses on the next set were harder (and worth more points) than the previous. So the better you did, the game would throw harder stuff at you so you'd get bored a lot less quickly.

Also the use of attacks, and dodging/reflecting the attacks was quite nice.

I loved BAG Versus mode, even though it winded up causing an all out war (and my PS1 being destroyed) at some crap ass party I attented years ago :D .

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this was the first game to start the whole rythm genre trend?

And yes, it's a great game.

I loved the Capoera stage in the first one. Actually, I was so addicted I imported Bust a Move 2. Did the US version have the same extra characters? The JP one had a slew of hidden ones including the flaming Michael Doi.

What the hell there was a third one?

I remember playing the import copy of these games when they first came out with my friends and we had a good time. They were devilishly easy with a lot of style so it was very accessible pair of games.

2's music was awesome.

Comet's, Tsutomu's, and Shorty's being my favorite.

^^ Thanks SSX that's exactly what I meant.

"Beddy beddy beddy beddy beddy beddy good."

The same rap was used in the DDR song "Put Your Faith In Me", IIRC (that whole "causin' much mayhem, droppin' drama" thing).

Bust a Move/Groove was cool, since it came out in the music game genre's early years. There wasn't the whole "creativity" angle that Parappa had, but the first game had excellent music (Kitty N, Shorty, Heat, etc.)... they changed music companies with the second one (East West or something like that), and for the most part, the music sucked. I liked Shorty's theme in the second one, and there was something about that Pander song that stuck in my head, but I thought the graphics were worse (Shorty's pigtails sloppily clipping right through her torso), and while the game system had more to offer, if the music doesn't really grab you, it all sort of falls apart.

Never played Dance Summit... had no idea that was a direct sequel.

The final battle against Robo-Z from Bust a Groove 1 is the best, easily

(Turn and face the music.
Turn and face the music now.
Turn and face the music.)

(Bust a..Bust a..Bust a Groove!)

I will never, ever run away.
I'll be here to fight another day.
I will make you realize
I'll always be right by your side.
Now our love is sanctified,
I'm here to bust a groove.

(Bust a Groove! Bust a Groove.. Bust a Groove!)

Boy, you're everything I'll ever need.
Oh Boy, you know you mean the world to me.
Oh I could never see you
Blinded by the blue.

I will never, ever run away.
I'll be here to fight another day.
I will make you realize
I'll always be right by your side.
Now our love is sanctified,
I'm here to bust a groove.

(Bust a Groove! Bust a Groove! Bust a Groove!)

I will never, ever run away.
I just can't live without you now.
I'll be here to fight another day.
Gonna see you blink no matter how.
I will never, ever run away.
I'll be here to fight another day.
I will make you realize
I'll always be right by your side.
Now our love is sanctified,
I'm here to bust a groove.

I played the Japanese version of Bust-a-Groove 2 and the music was fantastic ("Moonlight Party..."), but I heard that the North American version kinda goofed up on the music, but I never found out if it was true or not.

Wasn't Britney's Dance Beat develped by the Bust a Groove team?

Yes I believe so..... I am ashamed to admit that I own Britney's Dance Beat for that reason. :(

I liked both 1 & 2. Loads of fun, battling roboZ was great fun as well. But the battling was great in 2.

EDIT: I have both japanese versions for my PS1, legit! I think I have the first or second soundtrack lying around as well.

I loved 'em both, but I would consider the sequel being the better game. When it comes to music, I preferred the 2nd one by a small margin...even picked up the soundtrack.

I have Bust A Move 1 & 2 (JP) and also both soundtracks. The japanese versions are better with uncencored songs and content.

Oh, and I have Dance Summit but...........uh..........ya

if you can access newsgroups, you can pick up both soundtracks in alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.video-games

same with the OST for Guitar Hero + ICO

and yes, i loved both Bust-A-Groove games.

One of my fav ps1 series, I played both games to death. I'm suprised nobody mentioned the twin aliens - they're music and stage we're freakin awesome. I liked how the stages got crazier as you did better.

And who doesnt get excited during Fever Time!

I feel the original Bust A Move/Groove was better due to it having an Avex Music-produced soundtrack compared to the other versions...but the English version of 'Knife in the Blue Sky' (the music to Kitty-N's stage) was pretty bad =P
