Why is Canada so bad at sports/athletics?

Why are you completely ignoring winter sports and diminishing its relevance in your post?

Canada is very good at hockey. That's their sport...yet you didn't even mention it. I'm not even Canadian either.

Canada will become a contender in basketball as long as their prospects pan out.

Canadians have won at life. They don't need to win at sports. They should thank the herculean strength of the US economy for their good fortune.

They're pretty good at pro wrestling

Dang no Y2J shoutout?

The ignorance in this thread is unfathomable.

Andrew Wiggins
Anthony Bennet
Sidney Crosby
Steven Stamkos
PK Subban
Joey Votto
Georges St Pierre
Clara Hughes
Wayne Gretzky
Steve Nash
Larry Walker

I could go on.....

Just because we don't do very well at the Summer Olympics doesn't mean we don't have top level athletes

We are going to jump up big time in basketball and if baseball allowed pros in the Olympics we'd be pretty competitive

Just having good players dont mean shit. Otherwise a lot of african countries would be top tier in soccer.

And there you go...still ignoring hockey. They've won nearly 33% of the Olympic Gold Medals for Men's Hockey.

And what exactly is your point about basketball? You asked why they weren't good at basketball, and for the most part, they've lacked talent for years. Now they have a ton of prospects with all star potential in the NBA. It's a good starting point and better than the past.

Hockey and Curling supremacy.

Future Basketball supremacy

Canadians generally don't care as much about summer sports, but does that matter? Why does the UK suck at winter sports when they're a northern country with twice our population?

Not sure if its trolling or ignorance happening in the thread but I guess both are funny. A simple google search could show your opinion is incorrect.

Come on BigJonsson you dont include Raonic or Bouchard on the list.

Huh? Canada consistently wins Olympic gold in men's and women's hockey.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if he was talking about basketball or hockey with that post. Either way, he'd be wrong. Having top players in basketball (especially NBA all stars) usually means you'll do very well in international competition.

Why are Wiggins and Bennett getting hyped up as proof of Canadian sports prowess? Neither of them lasted til their second season with the team that drafted them.

You're top tier in hockey, no doubt. I'm looking at the stats and its not domination. Which should be expected since all your resources are poured there.

This is the same guy that trolled the winter Olympic thread shitting on canada..

Post a quote.

Same, it's getting rather fishy since a lot of the info is easily searchable and people pretty much answered the question.

1: We don't care about most sports.
2: We have a number of successful athletes in other sports but in small numbers. (Basketball for example)
3: Smaller population pool to produce top level athletes compared to other countries.
4: Seasonal climate reducing the chances of said smaller population to become skilled in summer sports.
5: Hockey takes the main spotlight to the point it's almost a religion.

Number one and Number 5 are such major contributors it's really a no-contest answer.

I think that it is a much better question. Why is the UK so bad at Winter athletics?

I wouldnt say all our resources are in hockey. Canada has lots of natural resources: oil, mining, lumber, water.

Canada is 122 in the current FIFA rankings... that means within North America they're between Haiti (an incredibly poor island devastated by a massive earthquake) and Aruba.

We do have good athletes. However, much of our focus is on winter sports. Plus we don't tend to fund athletics, at least not as much as the US does.

I'm pretty sure 95% of Canadians would probably not even know what FIFA stands for unless they google it. (I'll guess 30% won't know what FIFA is)

Our sports priorities are definitely not there lol.

Post a quote.

Not domination? What stats, exactly, are you looking at? Canada placed (ie got a medal) in 15 Olympics (out of the 21 played) in men's hockey. No one else comes close.

I think it's about as fair to look at Canada's performance in the Summer Olympics and conclude they're not a nation good at sport, as it would be to look at say, Australia's performance in the Winter Olympics and conclude they're not good either.

In other words, you've basically stacked the deck.

Because you're a fucking idiot?

I said don't get vex.

I dont think thats fair. Winter Olympics isnt 1/4 the size of summer.

So for those that were in Candian schools, did you guys not do things like track and field?

The Canadian women's team is ranked 7th in the world. Also Canada just hosted the women's U-20 World Cup, they're hosting the women's World Cup next year, and they're planning on bidding for the 2026 World Cup (like 2022 Qatar probably their best shot at qualifying is as the host nation).

We hold the Olympic record for number of gold medals won in a winter olympics. And it happened 4 years ago.

How ignorant can you possibly be?

And unless the world cup bid goes through, it'll probably end up forgotten over here. A bid doesn't mean much, hell I didn't even know we made a bid lol.
