Your question was "why isn't Canada good at sports/athletics", not "why isn't Canada good at sports/athletics I care about".
Well Canada isnt even 1/4 population of US so you probably shouldnt care about it either. Ignore it, its for the better. Im sorry Canada had to intrude your thinking.

yet the majority of players on american teams are usually Canadian. You can really see the skill level be diverse in the nhl but have a Canadian Olympic team well you know the outcomes. If Canadian players were strictly stuck to Canadian teams I wouldnt be surprised if a Canadian NHL team won every 2 years

There really isn't much to discuss.
Canada is a cold nation of 34 million that has chosen to place emphasis on winter athletics. This has allowed Canada to produce a large number of talented athletes in a variety of winter sports.
Canada currently holds the record for most gold medals won in a Winter Olympics.

so if i'm understanding correctly, technically american nhl teams are really winning these hockey gold medals, since we cultivate the talent and let them return home to win some olympic tchotchkes for the folks flipping through red green reruns.

That would be cheating. Something Canadians probably have to do just to compete in any sport. Look at Ben Johnson.
Would never see a good old american boy cheat to win sports.
Canada so bad at sports it cant even produce the fastest man in the world. Look at Jamaica over there only 3 million people and so much better at sports.

Well, they're equal with the USA for wins for this century.
Same as the US in the past 20 years, no wins. We do have one cyclist, Ryder Hesjedal who won the Giro d'Italia recently.

come on now. Canada consistently gets top 3 in the olympics for both Mens and Womens hockey...I mean what more do you want? For it to be at the level of US Basketball, where there you're one of the only 2 competitive teams and therefore no one can touch you? Hockey isn't much better but there's certainly more competition which causes basketball level dominance to be far less likely. I mean, Brazil pours all of its resources into soccer, but looking at only the stats you'd say they are far less dominant than Canada is at hockey.
