Why is dubbed anine frowned upon?

I don't understand why there is contempt for anime dubbed in other languages. I understand that Japanese anime has a style and flare all its own. But I see a lot of great non Japanese speaking actors able to convey the emotions and style the original was able to put out. So I'm a bit confused by this.

Is it just hardcore anime enthusiasts that have a problem with dubbed versions?
 
I like when the mouth matches the sounds, never had a problem with subtitles. The original voices sound cooler to me as well -_-

Some people like to watch undubbed because its "the real thing"
 
There are great actors in anime VA, but often they're constrained by poor direction or awkward translations or weird lip-flap timing. There are great dubs, but there's lots of shit as well.
 
I tend to think it is simply a matter of people growing attached the voices they originally watched the series with, combined with the how much anime fans watch subtitled anime. I know I tend to prefer the voices I hear first over ones I hear second.

From my experience with dubbing the voice actors are usually sub-par. Subtitles is always best option for me.
 
Purists being purists. Although yeah, some seriously bad dub jobs out there.

I become tuned to whichever language I hear first. Japanese King Kai, he sound strange man.
 
because a lot of it is just bad. it's always cool to watch an anime centered around samurai and then suddenly one speaks with a southern twang

i do normally watch my anime dubbed though. don't like reading subtitles too often as it takes my focus away from what's going on in the scene
 
Great dubs: FLCL, Gurren Lagann, Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist. Lots more I can't remember.
 
A lot of it is just bad.

But even if its not terrible, there's something about hearing something thats awkwardly translated read out loud that makes it stick out like a sore thumb to me, whereas I'm more forgiving if I'm reading it
 
People like the Japanese voice overs because they cant tell if its a shit voice actors or not. Ignorance is bliss in this case.
 
I prefer dubbed Anime to be honest. But then again, I like to be able to understand the conversation without having to read subtitles.
 
It seems like an afterthought that's why. The voice actors doesn't seem as passionate as the Japanese voice actors nor do a lot of them fit the role.
 
People like to tell themselves that the translation and English voice acting suck.

In actual fact, the Japanese writing and voice acting also suck.
 
Probably because those who are criticising the dub are also comparing it to the original Japanese actors. It's easier to find faults in an english dub that way.
 
Dubs undermine the author's original intent for the portrayal. A different voice actor means you're getting a different interpretation of the character. Easy.

I think this all the time heh. But on the subject of dub vs original, well...Japanese sounds 100 thousand times cooler than english, sorry english speaking bros :(
 
Some dubs are admittedly quite terrible, but there are plenty of companies nowadays who produce dubs that rival and sometimes surpass the original Japanese audio. Specifically - Funimation, Viz, and possibly Aniplex.

Recommendations:
- Steins;Gate
- Attack on Titan
 
Because original audio usually sounds better, that's how it was supposed to sound. I say this as someone who isn't a native English speaker.

While there are good dubs, you'll notice that they usually are done by the same studio/people, so after a while it gets really repetitive.

Also, children sound horrible in dubs, western professionals don't have the same voice range as the Japanese.
 
Its kinda just easier. Once you're ok and used to watching subs theres not this crazy "oh I can't watch that because..." If you train yourself to appreciate subbed anime (or anything really, though i would argue subtitled animation is its own beast) then don't have to worry about barrier to entry and can just watch whatevs.

Also for me its always just interesting hearing a different language.
 
Because subs work perfectly fine and the original audio is usually better performed because it's the voice. And it's current, I don't gotta wait a few months for a dub that's probably worse.

Also that I've seen people wait for dubs just so they can pay half attention to the show because their attention span doesn't pass 20 minutes. Others say they hate reading all the time, but that I never got either.
 
People that are stuck in the 80s and 90s. Around 2000 dubs became excellent and i prefer them to the Japanese voices.
 
so much of the older animes are filled with shitty jokes and bad acting that i gave up and just watched the shows subbed. i'm used to to subs now so i have no reason to watch english dubs.
 
Huh, funny enough my Japanese pop culture class was having the dubs vs subs debate today. I was the only one who prefered dubs.

The reasons my classmates gave for choosing subs inculded that it had better casting than english dubs and wanting to watch in its original form. The usual stuff, basically.
 
Here are my reasons:

* Enjoy hearing the original actors.
* If the VA is shitty I would not notice.
* I find a strange charm to it.
* Most dubs sound really weird to me and they distract me. More so when they keep the names the same. I can't help but chuckle when they try to pronounce Japanese names with english accents.

You do realize that writers dont say only such and such can voice this character right? Well, they couldn, but if they want it to be put into animation they likely have less of a say in that than you seem to think.
 
1. Americans don't like dubs. its a patriotic thing. not bad, Spaniards hate dubs too
2. sorry to break it down for you but your dubs are really 50/50
3. you change music sometimes too you bustards
4. the joke is lost. anime relies too much in tropes and in puns.
 
Even on anime that have supposedly good dubs the voices sounds forced or "heightened" somehow to me. Maybe the Japanese voices are bad somehow too, but I can't tell since I don't speak it.
