Why is everyone so excited for Destiny?

Maybe its just me.. but the PVP in this game doesn't sound all that appealing.

It's not just you. The PvP really does nothing new or interesting to make it worthwhile IMO, and I'd much rather play CoD or Halo. Jack of all trades, master of none. It's cluttered and confused.

The strength of the game lies in it's world and co-op features.

I wish I could get more excited for it. But I don't feel like it's truly doing anything new. And I also get the feeling I'm going to get milked for every cent I have as we progress.

At first I was really hyped for this game, but now I just wish it would come out so I could hear less about it. Its bad enough I have to see/talk about it 7 hours a day...that ruined it for me.

For someone that hated borderlands because that game has 100% shit awful weapon drops and the whole game is designed around 4 players and very unfun alone, how is Destiny in those areas?

Three reasons come to mind quite easily:

1)A lot of us have played and enjoyed the game.
2) The pedigree of the developer.
3) Potential of the concept.

I think Borderlands is more fun to play by yourself because the story and character stuff is more interesting. The humor and writing can pull you through by yourself, if it appeals to you.

Playing the Destiny Beta by myself was about as fun as playing PSO by myself, which is to say absolutely not at all. The story stuff is between non-existant to uninteresting. There's not really any humor, everything is played very straight, which makes it all that much easier to ignore.

Only because they improved the voice acting.

Why would Bungie put "the story stuff" into Destiny Beta? How do we know that we have seen any of "the story stuff"?

Probably because there was an intro, some story (there's that word) missions and a speech was given by the guy that informs you of the lore. Sounds like story stuff to me.

I was pretty excited to try it, but was a little jaded after having fought the tank for 10 mins, then the boss after that for like 5 minutes, where both battles consisted of shooting and then hiding when the boss turned its attention toward me. PvP was only slightly better, but it didn't have that much depth to it and some weapons were downright useless like the magnum, and it quickly devolved into one shotting each other with the special charged up.

The real nail in the coffin for me was the decision to put out DLC so quickly after the game launched.

It's not just you, and it's definitely not a stripped-down shooter. I think it was a lot of fun to play and it does MANY things well, and will only continue to be honed and improved by the awesome sustain work that Bungie does.

Playing Destiny by your self is probably the one thing you can do to make you hate the game.
Playing with people that all have headsets is the way to go.
You can make light of the game yourself without over the top humor coming out of the game. Tea bagging and dancing over peoples corpse while mocking them over the mic is always satisfying for a quick laugh.

Yes, the vast majority of my time spent playing the Alpha and Beta was with other people, mostly GAFfers, and I enjoyed that. I did like one mission by myself in the Beta to see what it was like and was bored af.

Not me. I liked to jump at the 2nd boss and pop him in the eye with my Titan punch, then double jump over with a few shots of my shotgun, forcing him to do that tractor beam move that I would escape, allowing for many, many shots from my companions and myself.

I mean ... if you play boring, then yeah the game will be boring. I also loved waiting for the reinforcements to drop from the Dropship while I land with my Titan smash right as they all gather. Destroy almost all of them all at once and generate about 7 orbs for my team. Then jump, slide and dodge my way back to cover as the survivors and the boss at this point are usually flashing bullets my way.

Everyone has their way of playing I guess. I like to keep it fun though

Also, I loved playing solo. Most of my time spent solo except in Strike missions.

That sounds like a brief summary of the prologue of story stuff to me.
Hopefully...

I love the progression and potential difficulty this game will provide. My best friend and I have been playing online co-op campaign console games for years, and I think this game is going to offer the most amount of fun for us.

Games journalism is an utter shambles.

Steve Butts is gonna have a really bad time if the story really is the thing he's absolutely most excited for about Destiny...

I wonder what the chances are that there will be a Myth series reboot in the future. Bungie lost the license with Myth 3 though, who has it?

Take-Two published Myth III in 2001, so that's probably the best guess.

Marketing.

So it was the marketing that was getting me hyped when I played the alpha?

Its obviously the alpha, the game had very little hype until the alpha.

For me tho its the setting, the graphics, the atmosphere in general, the gameplay, the powers, the hunter class, the satisfying knife throw, the music, and finally something really fun to play on my ps4 that should last a while.

I thought most of the story stuff in the Alpha/beta was boring as well but the moon mission introduced some actual mystery, thick atmosphere, and made it seem like it was going somewhere. I'm still not expecting much from the story but I at least have hope that there will be some cool moments.

I'm getting it because it's something I can play cooperatively with my friends and maybe some new people. I had fun doing so during the beta, but it did get boring after a while, running out of things to do. Hopefully the full game delivers for a little while and doesn't get stale so fast.

The competitive multiplayer was pretty fun even though I got my ass kicked a lot. I've been out of touch with competitive multiplayer games for some time. I doubt I'll find enough time to gain the skill it takes to dominate on the competitive mp portion of the game, but I'm sure I'll still enjoy it some.

Worth noting, there's not a whole lot of selection out there on the new consoles when it comes to shooters, so this is as good as it's getting for a while. And I'm sure it'll do just fine for the time being.

Sorry, Flip, got to nitpick this one.

Destiny is what Halo would feel like if it had ADS and if it didn't have the ability to shoot while jumping,
You can shoot while jumping. I know what you're criticizing here is how vertical movement affects shooting. It doesn't make it impossible, but it does make it more difficult. There were times in the beta where I flew up into the air and landed a headshot on my way down and it felt very satisfying and way more skillful than practically floating in Reach while 5-shotting. This is absolutely a balance decision and felt like a natural way to avoid one of the things complained about in Reach.

or to pick up weapons, if they removed half the weapon types and only left in the generic hitscan FPS gun archetypes,
Rocket Launchers are hitscan? But you're right in that most of the slow projectile weapons are in the hands of the enemies, which was always the intended design in Halo. Making Covenant weapons viable for player use always required shoehorning.

if they removed friendly AI
...and replaced them with actual human beings playing.

and flying vehicles
Confirmed not in game?

and the ability to hijack vehicles,
Yeah, the balance argument sounds rational, especially considering supers, but they still felt too powerful in the beta. Hijacking would help curb that and seemed a decent solution in Halo.

if they removed its interesting AI behaviors and replaced its varied enemy types with stiff humanoids who don't move when you repeatedly shoot them in the face (hundreds of times in the case of boss type enemies),
Okay, "removed its interesting AI behaviors" seems like a dubious claim, because the AI seemed pretty good when I was playing. Fighting The Fallen felt like fighting Elites. Fighting the Hive felt like fighting The Flood. That defense encounter in the Refinery was quite memorable. The fight against the walker near the end of the strike was, too. Is the simulation less rich? Yes, but it is a trade off for all the nice things that come from having a server-side simulation: mainly no input latency and seamless matchmaking.

if enemies didn't have patrol routes and instead just stood in place waiting for you to shoot them (over and over again as they respawn in the same spot), if you had to stare at life bars to figure out if you're dealing any damage.
I know you don't particularly care, but I like the numbers. I like the bars. They are presented cleanly, and provide more information to both the player and the enthusiast about the game mechanics than the Halo games, and they give clear feedback (albeit in far less subtle ways than Reach did).

Destiny is what Halo would feel like if you removed most things that made it Halo. Try going back to a Bungie Halo game and it might shock you how many cool, unpredictable things happen in those games, things that will never happen in Destiny because they've removed so many variables.
People don't realize it but simulation is huge in Halo. Input lag sucked in Halo. Joining other players in PvE co-op was always an inferior experience to multiplayer. Now they are even-tier, perhaps even more tipped towards PvE because of the huge amount of quality co-operative play that is there. Am I sad that my Sparrow just doesn't crash and roll and flip like my old Ghost? Yes. But there is so much here to enjoy that Halo didn't have as well.

115 hours to go.

Its obviously the alpha, the game had very little hype until the alpha.

Seriously... Nobody here gave much of a shit about Destiny until the alpha. Every thread was met with a collective yawn. Nobody understood wtf it was supposed to be. Then people PLAYED THE GAME and the hype exploded.

I didn't care about/understand it until I played the alpha. Now, I'll probably end up grabbing it some day. Not day 1 as shooters aren't really my bag and I don't have anyone to play with. That being said, I played the alpha alone and I still had a decent amount of fun and I could see the potential of having a few friends to play with. That's good shit.

Every time I see one of these threads I can't help but think OP is attention-whoring or hoping to wave his elite-gamer-taste erection in the faces of the hyped. People can't really be that dense as to not understand the myriad reasons why people are excited for this game, can they?

I used to be cautiously optimistic about Destiny.

Then I played the Alpha and realized I wouldn't buy it for the following reasons:

1- The game is clearly a DLC paradise for Activision. I can totally see how some exec would get a boner thinking of all the monetization opportunities. My own penis has an inversely proportional reaction to said DLC.

2- I don't like repetition or grinding and I don't give a shit about loot unless it takes the form of $$$ in my real life bank account.

3- I hate always-online requisites for single-player campaigns. Hate, hate, hate.

4- Shooting enemies is not very enjoyable. Needs more particles/blood/deformations.

But I can see how some people who do not share my preferences might want to spend dozens of hours playing it.

*shrug* Im not hyped..

I think people are hyped just because the next gen library is lacking a bit. Feel like people are just desperate for something good to play. Even this is still a cross gen game though..

I dont get posts like these, why cant people understand why people may like things that you dont. There are plenty of games you like that others dont.

I don't really care much about Destiny, although I have the PS4 bundle preordered anyway because I like the white.

I'll probably enjoy Destiny too once I try it out.

Honestly? It's the only way to get the white PS4.

This, basically.
