Why is gaf asking me to change my password?

Well that makes sense. For a second I thought I was banned or something. Things like this are why I got LastPass click a few buttons and my old gibberish password is new gibberish password with no worry on my end. I really recommend people get a password manager of some kind.

So even if a admins account was accessed they still *IN THEORY* shouldn't have access to our passwords right? They're hashed and whatever techno babble to be safe? This is purely precautionary?

Hey guys a Nigerian Prince just PM'ed me about a vast sum of riches that he needs me to move out of his country. This is legit right? Seems legit.

This did not actually happen

For email changes,

PM me.

Also changing your password is ok, no email is required.

Is it possible for me to have my e-mail changed to my Gmail? I'm currently using my school e-mail but I know that I won't have it forever and I'd rather just use my Gmail.

I always thought that people should be able to change their e-mail to a free provider after signing up because most people would rather keep their work/school e-mail for just that.

Well, this is all I get when I try to change passwords. Even did a password reset.

Men shit doesn't phase me as I use last pass and all my passwords are different. This kind of stuff happens all the time nowadays no matter how good (or bad in most cases) the security of a site. If you aren't using a password manager nowadays then you are just asking for trouble.

Your password is 3419 days old, and has therefore expired.

Please change your password using this page.

C'mon guys, can't I at least hit the decade mark?

But real question, I'm not sure I have access to the email I used 9.5 years ago... can I change it to a Gmail account? Can I change it at all?

Guys I no longer have access to the email I used to sginup for GAF and I can't change it to my Gmail. :( Will this affect me if there is a force password reset?

As I understand it, yes. Very few sites are stupid enough to save passwords in plain text, and I highly doubt this site is one of those (I think the forum software controls it anyway). It is possible to brute force a hashed password list, though (they feed it simple ones like "password1" and see how many matching hashes they get). In order to "steal" the password, they would have to successfully enter it and match it, which is no different from brute forcing any other type of account. But the more complicated your password, the less likely they are to do that (I wouldn't imagine most of these people even bother continuing once they've gotten matches on the usual "stupid" passwords like 12345). And if your password is unique to this site (as mine is), then it wouldn't help them anyway.

Is this a chance to brag/gloat/get depressed about how long we've been on NeoGAF? 3415 days since I set my password. That's 9 and a third years. Is that how long NeoGAF (GAF v 3.0) has been around?

I was able to change my password to the same one I've been using. Weird...or I guess a security flaw.

This, it's almost been ten years since I graduated high school

I wonder if the automated attack had anything to do with that spike in guest users 6 or so hours ago.

Was wondering about that. It was easily 30+K viewing gaming. It usually dies around 15K.

fake edit: well there you go

Most users ever online was 56,201, Today at 03:37 PM.

Well just as I posted the message appeared. Quick question, the email on file is basically worthless. Can I change it to one I use without getting banned?

I'm curious about this as well. I had to register through our ISP email, and that is literally the only thing I've used that email address for and that was oh, about 8 years ago? I just had to jump through rings of fire and two phone calls to get that email account unlocked so I could reset my password. It kept saying my current password wasn't correct when I'm 100% sure it was, especially since I could log in and out of GAF on my phone using it, but I think it maybe was something weird relating to my name change a couple of months ago since some of the pages were showing my old username when it reloaded.

But yeah, I totally get and agree with having a non-free email account to sign up with, but once you've signed up and are no longer a junior member I think you should be able to switch it. If we had moved sometime in the last 8 years I would have just been totally boned.

Only one solution then: Unban every account ever.

And send the unbanned accounts an email asking them to come back and post because we missed them.

Can you imagine the likes of Costanza, ioi, Sean Malstrom and the like all returning in one day? Chaos.

I just got uber scared for like ten minutes.

I changed my password and it would not work. My old college email, as it turns out, was deleted, so I couldn't even recover my password Was seriously starting to panic, even sent an email to support.

Then I realized.

I had Caps Lock on when I made my new password.

DAMN YOU SALTYBET TWITCH CHAT FOR MAKING ME TYPE LIKE THIS!

(I will be sending a PM along shortly to change my email, I apologize to anyone who reads the support@neogaf.com email for bothering you.)

I, too, was surprised at this sudden turn of events. Perhaps even a smidgen concerned, since it has never happened before. Oh well, password changed, all is well. And since I'm one of those smart guys who use a password manager I have different passwords everywhere, so no need to worry about changing it anywhere else.

This also made me (like many others) think about changing the e-mail address associated with my account. I use my old Uni address, and while I still have access to it I don't really use it anymore, and I also don't know if I'll always have access to it. I sort of understand the reasoning behind not letting people sign up with free addresses, but I think that after you've been granted Member status you should be trusted to change it to whatever you want. Oh well! (Yeah, I saw that I can PM a mod about this.)

We've just had an admin account compromised briefly by an automated attack. The hole was immediately plugged, but we're forcing a site-wide password reset for the safety of the members since it's possible they obtained some data. If you used the same password for other sites, be sure to update any relevant accounts elsewhere as well, and be especially careful with your email accounts. Sorry for the trouble.

What if Evilore's been hacked and we're playing right into their hands....
