Why is Gundam's Char Aznable so beloved?

You know who was the GOAT of Gundam though? That magnificent stallion Quattro Bajeena. Managed to deal with both Kamille and Amuro's bullshit while rocking those shades.

And unlike that coward Char, Quattro has never betrayed anyone.

If you want to use the Gundam=Star Wars metaphor, he's the closest thing the original series has to Han Solo.

Which yknow

Speaks to the kind of characters that anime has, but then again I'm not a huge fan of the UC shows. But he's snarky, he plays dirty, he's got a weird...romantic?... rivalry with the hero, he's got the skills that pay the bills, and he goes through a bit of a character arc in Zeta.

And yes his music is badass. And I mean his actual muisc not no wack ass vocal themes. And Shuichi Ikeda is a boss.

Char is the best for reasons already explained in this thread.

To this day I still regret not owning that Char GameCube, or the Char GBA SP.

When I visited Japan years ago the first souvenir I bought was a Char mug.

Heck my first exposure to Char was the PSOne game Gundam Battle Assault. Up until then Wing was the only Gundam series I was familiar with.
Just playing that I knew he must be an awesome character, because he had so many different mobile suits to choose from.

Casval Rem Deikun is GOAT. And yeah, him pulling the switcheroo with Char was genius. Helped that they both looked alike aside from eye colour. You'd think people would've caught that with military records, but the shades and mask were enough I guess.

There was one guy who noticed that Char was actually Casval. So Casval killed him by friendly fire during a night raid while they were in the Military Academy.

McGillis Fareed from Iron Blooded Orphans, who is ostensibly more like Char than Char ever was

Macky was their Char, since all Gundam series have a Char and he was a damn good one. Though his mask moment was hilariously and intentionally overdone.

But yeah, he was just a great character. You rooted for him, he showed that the Zeon were not just the enemy of the main characters but a side with their own motivations. His legacy and name being carried on still in the Gundam mythos and UC storyline says a lot. Where as his rival Amuro, and the other main Gundam pilots being lost to time is a big part of the franchise.

Despite Amuro, Kamille, Judau, Benhanger, and what not all being vastly more powerful than Char in terms of newtype ability, they were never cloned or mentioned again in the common thoughts of the people compared to The Red Comet.

Also hot damn the Gundam Wing fans... I know its the only Gundam you guys watched but lol.

Technically Kamille, Judau, and Benhanger were the clones of Amuro. They pretty much followed the same exact story beats of his arc. The unwilling child soldier "forced" to fight in a war that he doesn't necessarily believe in. Even characters in other mecha series like Shinji Ikari and Renton Thurston kind of owes their characterization to Amuro.

But Char has literal clones(one main stream confirmed at least) for the whole reason of being Char. The others just follow the same story beats because... well poor writing and wanting to give the audience a familiar story.

I'd argue he's kinda more Anakin/Darth Vader across the entire series. He's sort of the Newtype chosen one (or thinks he is), has super powers, falls from grace, adopts a mask, serves an empire he doesn't always like, kills his own side occasionally, makes use of superweapons...

I'd like to hijack this thread for a bit. Looking for another Gundam series to watch, but not sure which one.

The last one I've seen and really enjoyed was 08th MS Team. I loved the darker and a bit more realistic approach.

Any suggestions?

I liked Thunderbolt, it was only a few episodes, it is pretty dark. The two main characters is a crippled Zeon Sniper with prosthetics vs. a cocky Federation ace. The soundtrack is also jazzy. Trailer if you want to see what it looks like.

If you're into the UC, I say go with Unicorn, easily. Doesn't take too long to get through, has good animation, music, etc.

And I liked the story for being a good summation of Gundam, though I know it has its detractors around here.

Do we have a consensus on how the Peter Jackson edition UC Re:0096 did by the way? I was kinda curious on checking it out, but wasn't really that keen to watch a padded out version of something I already liked.

How dare you not throw yourself at the feet of Edward/Char/Casval/Quattro/Frontal----goddamn the dude goes by so many names.

Anyway, so many posters beat me to the bunch but a personal note I want to go off on is that he's perfectly played by Shuichi Ikeda

My understanding is that there isn't much added, just small animation tweaks and some openings and endings.

Great, thanks! I'll check them both out :)
The Trailer for Thunderbolt looks really good.

I wouldn't exactly consider Kamille an Amuro clone. Those two went at things way differently. Kamille's similarities with Amuro begin and end with them being prodigies and to be honest I think Kamille excelled Amuro on that front since he was an expert in mobile suit design. The AEUG wouldn't have wasted their time building Kamille's Zeta Gundam if the specs weren't legit. I think Amuro was more of a pacifist as well, once the Titan's roughed him up he couldn't wait to fuck shit up in the Mk II and even threatened to step on some dude with an evil laugh. There's also the fact that I just think Kamille was more of a ladies man. Amuro couldn't keep a stable relationship to save his life.

At least Amuro didn't have a girly sounding name. :P

Char landed a clear headshot with a bazooka through the window of a launching spacecraft. How could I *not* love him after that? He's also held that magnificent speech in Zeta.

I refuse to accept that garbage piece of character assassination of a movie as canon, Char's arc ends with him and Amuro being drinking buddies ;-;

Have you seen Iron Blooded Orphans? It fits both 'darker' and 'more realistic' IMO... it's very bleak, but i enjoyed it a lot and it has some awesome mobile suit designs.

If you didn't watch Unicorn i'd always recommend that also as it's my favourite Gundam series.

Any streaming sites(Netflix etc) with the full original series and/or Zeta? I remember watching it on CN back in the day but they pulled it due to the ratings. :<

No, haven't yet. I'll definitly check it out. Thanks :)

Char/Quattro always had the baller ass suits.

Hyaku so good.

I've always had a soft spot for the Hyaku-Shiki. Unlike the Mk.II, the Hyaku really felt like the next-gen suit they were trying to reach when Zeta was rolling. Zeta and ZZ both look sort of derived from elements of the Hyaku, but just don't do it as well.

I do agree, though, that the Sinanju is probably the best looking suit in the entire franchise.

I don't like the Sinanju. Best Char Suit is hos OG Zaku II. The Hyaku Shiki ain't bad either.

His Rick Don from the novel is hot.

You say that like Kamille could keep a stable relationship lol

Zeta was basically about how much trouble Kamille had with women, especially after his mom's death

Did anyone complain about his characterization in CCA yet? That is a staple when discussing the character.

Yeah, he never struck me as the type to act on his impulses, largely due to his mother issues. Intimacy was never in the cards for him in those relationships. A creeper, sure, but he's not a danger to any of them beyond whatever maneuvering that will suit his own ends.
On the other hand, to me ALL Char ever did was act on impulses.

Amuro's bullshit? In Zeta? Are you kidding me? Amuro wasn't ALL ACTION 100% of the time because of the army's house arrest, that's it. He deals with Quattro's existential bullshit over some whisky.

Dude what. Char is a rogue with a heart of gold now? What Gundam did you all watch?

It's been ages since I watched the original MSG but a moment that always stood out to me was near the end of the show. Char sorties in the Zeong (aka the final boss) and ends up confronting Amuro on the battlefield. Despite being in a superior suit and being a superior pilot, he can't land a hit on Amuro because Amuro is a much stronger newtype (and has also grown as a pilot). At this point the narrator comes in to cut the tension by straight up telling just how frustrated Char is at Amuro having the upper hand, describing Amuro with the impersonal "Gundam pilot".

There were probably other moments like that during the show, but I remember it then realizing just how attached you become to Char's own story to the point that, like the narrator, you side with him and want to see him come out on top, even if it's against the main protagonist.

But yeah, a lot of people have pointed out a lot of good reasoning for why Char is pretty dope, just wanted to add a little anecdote.
