Why is it that people are so impatient when trying new games?

I'd first like to say that at my school, I only know about 3 other people besides me that bring their GameBoys (or anyother handheld for that matter) to school. Anyway, often people will come up to me and be like "What's that!?" and ask if they can try it. Seriously, unless it's something very simple like a beat-em-up type game, they always rip out the game (without turning it off!) and are like "This game sucks, I don't understand it!". I mean if they don't understand it, why not, oh, I dunno...Learn it??? A good example was today, I was playing Advance Wars and one of my class mates saw me playing it and was like "Wow, that's cool, I wanna try!", but despite a menu called "Field Training" as always after about 5 minutes he ripped out the cartridge and asked if he could play another game; all while complaining that he doesn't "understand it":P he then played Double Dragon Advance which he played for a good 40 minutes.

So, why is that people today are so impatient and aren't willing to try something unless it's extremely easy and a game where you can figure out what to do in about 5 minutes?

Thanks to hours of TV watching most kids today suffer from some form of A.D.D.

At least that's always been my theory.

Well then again most people are just stupid.. that's my other theory....

Poor Education - Sick society.
Nowadays it's all about image and "fast and easy as possible". People aren't teached about efforts, perseverance and patience anymore (well, not in America). Only speed and performance is what we expect from people today. This also reflect on gaming.

I realize that (atleast at my school which is so Sports centric it's absolutely absurd) most people don't play games on a regular basis but saying a game "sucks" because they're unable to try to understand it is just dumb:P

Well it's no different in anything else, all through HS baseball was seen as the lesser sport and football as the king of kings sport! No matter the fact that we went to the state tourney while the football team did jackshit.People lack an understanding,or find the sport boring to themselves,so it sucks to them. You could apply it to movies, books, games, sports, etc. :P

I think it's the internet since everything is so immediate. I've noticed my patience drop off a cliff in the 11 years I've had it. I used to read 4-5 books a month pre-internet days. Now, zero. Who the fuck has time for books when I can look at pictures of naked chicks pooping on each other?

I don't think it's got anything to do with the internet or people watching more TV. I'm 35, and the scenario described was just as prevalent in the 80s. I don't know what causes it, but it always annoyed me too. I gave up showing games to non gamers many, many years ago. Tetris and beat 'em ups, sure. Anything more complicated than that, no. Maybe Nintendo's got a point.

probably because those people never grew with the game idnustry to begin with. maybe the last game they played the joystick only had 1 2 maybe 4 buttons? that might have something to do with it. the majority of casual gamers could very well be frustrated with currently controls. and what's wrong with more simple arcade action games, I love them as much as regular epic deep consoles games. sometimes I actually prefer the simple ones, I put in a TON of hours into super monkey ball on gcn and the gba, does that mean I don't get the "other" games? he probably had limited time and wanted to play something FAMILIAR. hence a reason probably why the NES revival series kicked so much ass, probably previous gamers or parents with kids who bought them knowing they were good and wanted to introduce them to their kids or what have you.

strategy games take time to get involved in? If they are borrowing your gameboy, probably not enough time...

Yeah, you're right, but I think it's more peer pressure/social conformity than anything else. Displaying that you're really into something (besides the widely accepted "cool stuff") makes you look like a major geek for most kids. Same way when I was in HS.

That could be a cause, but it's happened to me in several 1 on 1 situations as well. I think it's mostly got something to do with whether the person is a casual gamer or not. Also, in this particular situation, maybe the guy felt stupid for not understanding the gameplay right away, and then the easy way out is to blame the game by calling it stupid.

I'd have more of an issue as to why someone was manhandling my expensive electronic entertainment
Exactly...If someone just ripped out my cart without turning the game off first...well they would earn themself a fist in the stones.

What eats me up are people that absolutely refuse to read on-screen instructions for immediate use. How many games or demo games have I seen where someone runs up to a door to leave a room, the screen is blaring "Press A" or whatever, and they just can't figure it out? "But, I'm pressing A!!!" But now, you're on the opposite side of the room from the fucking door. Good job!

Anyway... People don't want to learn. Learning makes them feel stupid, so they toss the stupid game aside. Sounds stupid? That's 'cause most people are stupid. Thank you, and goodnight everyone.

I always wonder who of the people calling other people stupid, are infact, stupid themselves.

Especially when they say people are stupid. Wouldn't that mean you were also stupid, because you do infact belong to the people group. And wouldn't the fact you called yourself stupid make you stupid. So it's a redundancy (sort of like the work fact in this post) of stupidity going on. Unless you were an alien (i.e. not a person) of course, than none of this applies to you.

Anyways, I have nothing constructive to add to this thread.

Eh. If I had insecurity issues, I'd probably argue about this to the point of getting banned.

I didn't mean to direct at you personally or anything.

I was just making an observation cause I see people call people stupid quite a bit on the internet. I have also, which would make me stupid going by my observation. I meant no offense, I just think it's kind of funny how much that phrase is used on the internet, "people are stupid".

I, for one, blame A.D.D. for such HEY LOOK A BUNNY!!!

That sounds about right

To be honest, if a game takes more than five hours to get to the enjoyment, I'll have no desire to play it in the slightest.

Think of life like chess

the idiots don't get it
the smart people do
the nerds make clubs

think about it: here you are complaining about dumb people when you are freely letting people use your GBA during school to play games and then silently getting annoyed when they don't take the games out the way you'd like but never explain

suggestion: Don't bring any game systems to school...portable or otherwise
desire: buy a PSP and fill it with lesbian threesome anilingus clips and then show that off...optional geek (hardcore) points depending on how long the clips are. 10 points per minute

In the immortal words of the great George Carlin:

THE PUBLIC SUCKS. FUCK HOPE.

The man speaks the gospel. People have always been impatient and stupid. It isnt going away. I think that it is very rare to find someone willing to learn. I am impatient with games now, but not that bad. I just dont have the dedication that I once had.

But as others have said, people want the fast and easy way out. That is why there are so many black belts in martial arts out there that dont deserve a fucking yellow belt. They are just impatient and want the illusion of accomplishment and dont have the balls or the patience and willpower to do it themselves. That is why more money is spent every year on diet programs and diet food than on exercise and physical training.

People are even worse when it comes to music :P I mostly listen to progressive, it's amazing seeing people weaned on 3 minute long pop songs complain about 10 minute songs that take a while to build up... or whole sets that have subtle peaks and valleys. Annoying hearing them complain :P
