Why is nobody talking about Carrier Command: Gaea Mission?

Due to hit the PC and 360 in about 2 weeks.

Looks like it could be fun. Sort of like a deeper futuristic version of Battlestations: Midway or something.

Made by Bohemia, the ARMA guys.

I had forgotten all about this. I need to read more about it.

If it's anything like the game I fell in love with on the Atari ST then it's getting bought.

This. Carrier Command may be (undeservedly!) a little forgotten these days but, frankly, it's one of the finest games ever created. My worry, though, is that it's been so long, I'm taking a wait-and-see approach to this one.

And to answer the OP's question directly: It'll be because Carrier Command is (undeservedly!) a little forgotten these days.

I think the game looks pretty good, however, why on earth did they shovel an FPS mode in this I don't know as it looks very lacklustre.

If you can play it without the FPS part then ill pick it up during a Steam sale at some point.

Yeah I stopped by and played a bit during E3 but was stuck in some FPS section.
Was pretty forgettable in that part but if the other sections are fun I may pick it up still.

I watched the video and I got hit by a bit of nostalgia. :) Carrier Command was one of the first video games I ever played and it looks like a faithful adaptation. (My parents bought me an Atari ST Discovery Pack for Christmas when I was 4 and Carrier Command was included along with Bomb Jack, Space Harrier and Outrun.)

The on-foot FPS section looks a bit janky, but I'm glad it's just an optional part. I still need to see how buggy it is at launch before jumping in, but at this point I'm happy at the direction the developers took.

I bought this today and I'm loving it so far. It's a little janky, but it's also much more of a traditional and playable game than anything Bohemia has made in the past. It's really cool.

It is indeed impressive, but i get the feeling Bohemia won't be able to pull of a very polished experience. It all boils down if they will have the commintment to keep improving the game after release.

The FPS part needs lots of work. Why is it so rough if they are working on Arma III, can't they share some assets?

I am kinda shocked that this game has been so neglected by the PC fraternity. The original carrier command was a master of action and strategy. I remember playing for 10 hour stints on the Spectrum 48k.

Over the years I have yearned for a remaking of Carrier Command and the minute I was able to pre-order this I did. I wasn't too impressed with the beta principally because I didn't have a clue what the hell I was doing and I got worried about the full retail release.

Now it is here and I have had time to play it I can honestly say it is just like Carrier Command but with a few extra bells and whistles. I haven't come across any first person shooter missions yet (outside of the tutorial) but the feeling of launcing Manta's and Walrus's is still there.

The only complaint I really have is with the mouse sensitivity, it really is a bit OTT and I just can't seem to get it right with the mouse sensitivity options. All in all if you were a huge fan of Carrier Command then it would be hard to see how you could not like this re-imagining of the game.

It runs really well, which is hopefully a good sign for Arma III :)

The FPS parts of this game are really terrible and thankfully aren't the main attraction.

I do think they are detrimental to the game as a product, any new player is probably going to be put off by the opening section of the single player game, it initially comes across as a really poor halo-like shooter. They should have used the time spent making the FPS games on improving the main game elsewhere.

I'm glad that this game exposed me to Carrier Command because I never played the original. If I had, it probably would have blown my tiny mind.

I'm playing the PC version here, the 360 version isn't out till next week in the US. I agree that the mouse sensitivity feels a little strange, not accelerated but...kind of weird, like it's using a strange smoothing curve. Performance is rock-solid compared to Arma II though.

It's one of my first gaming memories:

It took a while for the 4 year old me to get used to it though. :p

I'll see about getting it on the PC soon. I'll need to make time for it though. :/

That's not an ST screenshot, surely? ST would have been full colour like the Amiga one (and probably slightly faster like most 3D games)

It's a Spectrum screenshot from Wikipedia. It's the quickest image I could find.

My only exposure comes from the video walktrough posted. Other thing i could say is that, i would like to have bigger scale battles.

Still the game is something reallly special.

I'm guessing the FPS campaign mode will be the stick that the reviewers beat it with...
...and this will be ignored entirely.

I also suspect the price will come to hurt them. With all due respect, I fail to see why this is twenty bucks more expensive than Take On Helicopters, especially considering the FPS component is duff.

The main part of the game seems quite good. The FPS parts of the campaign are a waste of everybody's time though. Thankfully they are infrequent.

Just looked at a trailer on Steam. Looks like something I'd actually want to play if I had time. If I do and there's no demo, I'd definitely rent a 360 copy provided it isn't dumbed down or anything.

I never really understood what I was supposed to do in the original but i've never let that stop me. Beautiful game it was.

I'm interested in this but time-poor at the moment, might give it a shot in another month or two.

It is so-so. Some parts are good, some parts are alarmingly amateurish. I'm not even half way through the campaign and I'm getting bored of the gameplay. 7/10s all round.

I'm a big fan of the original for Amiga (still have it) and was really looking forward to playing this when they announced it was coming to consoles.

Then they announced which consoles it was coming to (360 only). That's when I lost any interest in the game and didn't even bother checking it at Gamescom 2012.

I was hoping for a Move compatible PS3 version, with point and click interface and all.

My opinion from playing the demo:

If you play this purely as a RTS game then I can see it being fun. But controlling the units and guns on the carrier individually took a lot of patience. That and on numerous occassions my AI-controlled ground vehicles got caught in a move forward, blocked, reversed, drove forward, blocked, reversed... loop.

It's going to be absolutely savaged by mainstream reviewers. I'll pick it up once it drops in price.

Hideous pathfinding and possibly the most pedestrian FPS sections in recent memory are hampering my experience. I'm a huge Hostile Waters fan, never got to play the original, but damn if Rage could get it right over a decade ago in regards to pathfinding and - astoundingly - a decent narrative, what's Bohemia's excuse?

Hmmm. Will keep persevering, but damn.

I'm a big Hostile waters fan too but when I went to buy it on GOG I found that it's been delisted :(. It's still on greenman gaming but I've got enough digitial clients already. Its a great game. Too bad it's not more available.
