Why is peanut butter uncommon outside the US/Canada?

Nutella is not anything like peanut butter..

and we have Nutella over here too...

so stop saying Nutella..

Op asked a question and imo Nutella is a valid answer as it tradionally fills in the same spot in Europe that peanut butter fills in in America.
Peanuts itself arn't uncommon but their taste is widely associated with snacks for parties or while watching TV etc. not something that you would put on a bread.
Combine that with the dominance of Nutella and other sweet spreads and that makes it hard to market peanut butter.

in belgium its pretty much nutella (and a 100 different brands like it)

Exactly this.

I adore peanut butter. It's a real weakness of mine. Give me a jar of the stuff and a spoon and I could quite happily go through the whole thing.

Because everywhere else has discovered the factually superior Nutella.

EDIT: dat first post

If you're eating healthy Nutella isn't quite going to cut it with the sugar in there. Also how are you going to do a PB&J sandwich with Nutella? Although I love both.

Peanuts are less popular here.

I noticed in American candy bars just how many have nuts mixed in them. I suspect it's because nuts are a cheap filling.

Lets face it. Practically nobody is eating these because it is healthy. If that were so, breakfast cereals wouldn't be so popular.

Personally, I eat nutella because it is bloody delicious.

I like peanut butter, but not on bread. I prefer to eat it just straight out of the jar. But if I'm gonna do that, I might as well just eat actual peanuts. So that's my reason. I have peanut butter at home actually but I dunno. I only eat it very occasionally.

I second this. Speculoos is the shit.

Peanut butter ben and jerry's is fine, but pure PB is just too queasy.

My grandma told me that they were bombarded with peanut butter in UNNRA packages right after WW2 and all thought how disgusting that stuff is and it simply vanished from use till 1990. We sell meager amounts in shops, mostly to hotels for US guests.

Our taste is used to Nutella and other mild/hazelnut creams (like Eurocream, Viki...)

It is important for me that North Americans understand that Nutella in Europe is of a much higher quality than what is sold there.

Because it is bad for your health, and US/Canada are nearly the only countries were there is a mass market for anything despite what it does to you.

I haven't seen any place with as many extremely oversized people as North America.

hey thanks! i guess they don't have mcdonalds or cigarettes in other parts of the world.

Peanut butter has a lot more saturated fats (meaning less healthy fats) than many other nut spreads, and it is not very good. American.

It doesn't have an unhealthy amount of saturated fats. It's also is very high in unsaturated fats (80%, similar to olive oil) which isn't a bad thing. Plus a nice protein kick.

I only go for the less processed natural-style PB personally.

Think again, bro. I have some in the cupboard. Again, very different from peanut butter.

Also, here we only have the Skippy peanut butter, is it good, fellow US gaffers?

I'm not American but I don't like Skippy very much. It's too salt, too dry and doesn't really taste like peanuts to me. If I can get it, I prefer Mississippi Belle's crunchy peanut butter. It's so good. Not very salty, very creamy, tastes like actual peanuts and the crunchy variety is REALLY crunchy. The pieces are actually peanut halves, not some ground up shit like in most brands. And it has the perfect amount of peanut pieces. They're pretty spread out so there's a lot of actual creamy butter in there as well. It's hard to find though. :(

I've noticed that PB is pretty damn expensive in Europe, well in Italy anyways. Like 5 euros for a little jar.

When ever my family visits us from Italy all they want is PB.

I've eaten a peanut butter (made from just peanuts) + nutella (small snack sized one from Europe) + speculoos (from Trader Joe's) sandwich once. It was amazing.

But yeah, I'm American and love real nut butters that are made from pure nuts though peanut butter is my favorite over all.

Regarding Nutella, the version we get here in NA doesn't taste as good as the one from Europe, which my best friend sends me from overseas. I eat it once in a while, but I prefer peanut butter by a longshot.

Speculoos cookie butter is amazing. I've made these cookies with them (along with some dark peanut butter cups from Trader Joe's):

What is it with white people and Nutella? Yuck! I tried it once and immediately threw it out. When I used to stock in a grocery store we kept throwing the Nutella out because nobody ever bought it and it expired. But now that I live on the white side of town I see it moving all the time.

This is what I was talking about earlier. It's sold in the US as Biscoff spread. The label on the jar is basically identical other than where it says "Speculoos" it says "Biscoff". It's ground-up biscotti cookies.

Because its gross. I like my peanuts the old regular way, not spread on bread thanks. And really the same can be said of nutella

Man, I can't imagine my life without peanut butter. Spread some on bread (especially toast) with a cup of coffee. Damn good way to start the day.

Also, I tried Nutella once and didn't care for it. My wife had some in a crepe when we were in Europe a few years ago and claims it was much better over there. I'll just take her word for it... heh.
