Why is PS4's Internet Speed So Bad?

I recently wanted to try to remote play with my Vita, but it refuses to let me connect because it says the internet speed is not fast enough on the PS4.

For the record our internet speed is 70mbdl, and about 7 up. On PS4 i am detting about 6 down, and 900kb up. That's pathetic, especially considering i have no issue with any other device in my house.

This isnt the first time Ive noticed this either. Back when I bought Horizon digitally it was extremely slow to the point I had to do a bunch of work around to even get it downloaded in 4 hours. Meanwhile on Steam i can dload something in less than an hour.

I have done the DMZ thing, as well as change the DNS. It solved nothing. Is there nothing that can be done, or PS4's internet speed truly this wretched? I would love to remote play to my Vita, but it is looking impossible as of this moment.

I have this weird issue where I have to test the connection to get things to load like every few minutes or so. Like if I'm browsing the PS store and I'm in there for a few minutes, it'll start becoming very sluggish and I'll have to go out, test the connection, and resume browsing. I dunno what's up with that.

PS network speed has always been compromised to a degree. with the Slim and PS4 Pro, they put in a new wifi chip so wifi speeds and connections should be way better, but that doesnt do much for wired connections

Yeah, taking my PS4 to three separate locations (50mbs and 30mbs), I've only ever gotten 2mb or thereabouts when it's switched on and I'm downloading. Netflix and Spotify just about stream okay, but YouTube is terrible. Funny thing is, when I place my PS4 into rest mode the internet connection speed shoots straight up (downloading games overnight etc.).

For w/e reason, if I let the console go into rest mode my connection seemed faster.

Things that said it would take 3 hours to dl would only take mere minutes in rest mode.

Holy shit that is quick compared to mine. Easily the worst device on my network. I took the effort to wire the thing too so wireless interference isn't even up for consideration.

What pisses me off is that when it wants to, it can go pretty quick but 90% of the time it acts like lazy POS that is out to annoy me.

wire-less connection is terrible on PS4, if you're using Wired connection and still having slow speed then it may be a problem from your modem, contact your internet provider to check your modem

If you are going to download anything large put your PS4 into rest mode. In my experience it downloads way faster in that mode for some reason.

Same thing happens to me takes me 8 hours to download 1gb on a 100mb connection... Steam and Origin i get 10-11mb/s. Is there something wrong with my PS4 ?

PSN is made out of Popsicle sticks Sony stole from the ice cream truck that goes past their headquarters once a week.

I can'tbelieve they have the gall to charge for it. Paying for online is already bullshit, but considering how crap is on Sony's systems?

Sounds like you're confusing Mbps and MBps speed tests on your computer and your PS4. 70Mbps is around 8MBps and 9Mbps is around 1MBps, pretty sure the PS4 tests in megabytes and not bits. Wouldn't explain how slow downloads are though, I have the same issues on a similar connection but the system speed test returns the right results.

Are you doing local remote play? I believe that remote play locally has nothing to do with internet speeds (they just use the weak internet speed message as a generic error message, which can be misleading). If your PS4 is on wireless though, then that may be the issue. The PS4 (heck, nearly every single Sony game device I've owned) has BS wifi connectivity. Eventhough my router and PS4 sit in the same room and have 100% signals, I still had to hardwire my PS4 (powerline in my case since I didn't have a long enough ethernet cable) to get remote play to work without my vita complaining about internet speeds.

Back to internet speeds though, yeah I don't know why the PS4 downloads really slow from PSN. Steam maxes out my internet connection easily (200mbps) but my PS4 can only get up to 20mbps or something lower

This has happened to me before too.

I don't know why they aren't doing any better on this front. I haven an OG PS4, but I haven't heard of it being any better on the Pro or Slim either (which would go some way to me considering one.) PSN needs a total and complete overhaul.

Even wired PSN has always been bad for me. On Steam, I get 50-60MB/s. Takes <10 min to download 40GB. With PSN, the same amount could easily take around 4 hrs. Doing the pause / resume might increase the speed for a short time, but it will surely drop back down.

Use a wired connection instead.

Wired for me:

Wireless:

32 Down, 8 Up only.

Sometimes I get as much as 60 down, 9 up on wireless if no other devices are using it at all.

PS4s wifi chip is ass. The slim and Pro have vastly improved wifi.

Why have Sony chosen to disable all PS4s across the globe?

Oh wait I unplugged mine, guess it's not a malicious worldwide issue. Carry on.

Wondered this myself. I have a fast fiber connection and PSN downloads are a joke. It has saved me from blind buying some games, because I know it will be a loooooooooong download wait with me having to babysit it, pausing and resuming the download again and again to keep the speeds decent. So instead I just don't buy the game. Voice quality also seems meh on PSN still.

I usually get about 30 Mbps down/40-55 Mbs up on the PSN speed test, which is actually one of the highest I get of any speed test (Canada's CIRA or in the US Measurement Lab, Speedtest.net, etc). Downtown Van to San Diego since I think that's where the PSN servers are. Most games download in 1-2 hours. XCOM 2 a week ago I think was 22GB and took a bit under 2 hours or something (I could play it in like 45 minutes but the game could run at 9GB or something). Uploading a 1GB video usually takes about 10 minutes. So, I've never really found PSN to be slow in recent memory.

Sorry for bump but wasnt sure where to post this.

Im having issues. I have 100mb per sec internet but my psn speeds are so slow I cant load anything on it. Nothing downloads, cant access friends lists, whats new etc.

Connection test panel shows really slow download speed eg 60 kbps and failed upload.

Is there anything I can do or is my ps4 wifi thing probably broke?

Edit: just did a restart, speed went to 30 mbps then 190kbps then 50 kbps within 3 mins. Something is off...

Have you tried a wired connection? Could there be a bunch of interference from other wireless signals?

Have you manually changed any network settings? If so, try resetting to default.

Try a wired connection
Try to manually change DNS to Google's (primary 8.8.8.8 and secondary 8.8.4.4) - https://www.reddit.com/r/PS4/comments/25iqfb/how_to_improve_connection_speed_on_ps4/
Could try resetting your modem (not sure if it's only the PS4 having the slow to no connection) if that doesn't change anything could call your ISP and let them do a line test to see if there's a weak signal
Could try resetting the PS4 itself BUT I'm not sure if it will do anything (I do not have a PS4 and only saying this as the very last thing you coudl try).

Yah I stopped paying for it because issues like this, credit cards stopping working, internet store stopped working, terrible customer support for any issue you have. It's really a shame. They just don't seem to care.

This is pretty much my experience as well. I have 100 MBPS down and 5 up at my house and I only get about 1 MBPS down if I'm lucky. Thing is, I can play games fine with absolutely zero lag but downloading is a joke.

Once I put it on rest mode though everything is fine and I can download at normal speeds.

Launch PS4, if it makes a difference.

I'm on a 150mb connection and can get about 50-75% of that(15MBish) ONLY after a reboot. If I do anything else on the system while it's downloading super fast, it drops down to .2MB/s and stays there until I reboot again. Come out of rest mode, .2MB. Open the network test menu, .2MB. Reboot, immediately back up to 15MB until I touch something again.

I highly recommend rebooting when your downloads are slow and just see if it's going fast immediately after.

I have the exact same problem. Wtf.

Try connecting it to the internet through a proxy server running on your PC. It worked for me, it has to do with how it manages packets. I used CCProxy (it's free) to do this.

People need to stop messing with the network settings on the PS4 and change them on your router instead.

Default settings
DNS changes at router

I saturate my connection every time whereas before I would have issues with consistency and would need to pause/resume constantly.

Same here, also slow downloads with my PS4 Pro, wired 350/25 connection. Downloads nicely in rest mode and multiplayer works nicely, but if you don't live near a PS server your download speeds will always suck.

I get good speeds with my PC and Switch wired, PSN just sucks ass at providing good DL speeds.

Edit: Using PC as a proxy negates all of this, or so I've heard.

Ive noticed my downloads have been failing lately, assumed it was a space issue but nope. Turns out its the poor/non-existent connection to psn servers

I have xbox one, wii u, bunch of other consoles all using wi-fi too with no issues. Ps4 is the only one that basically doesn't work.

All for the pleasure of £49.99 a year. Jk, not renewing - don't feel like dragging ethernet cables across hallway into my ps4 room just to go online
