Why is Resident Evil Code Veronica so underrated?

8572.jpg

Seriously, I think it's the best classic Resident Evil, yes even better than 2. The full 3D backgrounds allied with the classic gameplay style gives much more immersion than the pre-rendered ones IMO.

So I ask, why no one talks about it? What's the consensus about this game?

I honestly don't know, it's fucking awesome. Only REmake and RE4 are better. The setting, story, enemies, villians, music and boss fights are all top notch.

It's underrated? Thought it was pretty popular.

Of the old-skool games, only RE0 gets more hate. RE0 deserves it though.

If anything it's overrated. Possibly the worst classic RE. I haven't played Zero though.

See.

It's my favorite of the classic RE games, but I think most people just prefer the GameCube remake of the original or the new direction taken by RE4 instead.

It commits lots of design sins, namely having unannounced gut check moments that let you unknowingly save without enough resources to ever continue, forcing you to lose hours and hours. I remember watching my roommate get really into it, only to lose all momentum when it was impossible for him to clear the airplane fight. It's an alright game, but the other REs already do almost everything it does, but better.

Game absolutely blew me away on Dreamcast. What a ride. Still one of the cleverest and most unique games in the series. One of my all time favourites.

To be fair this is a staple of the series to a point. Intelligent, sparing use of ammo in order to cut down on wasted resources, in addition to good slot management, is the essence of every classic RE game.

You really are screwed if you don't have enough health for the last boss, though.

Because its where the story jumped the shark and where it reached the nadir of the "find a key and then backtrack all the way across a massive complex" gameplay loop.

It barely brought anything new to the table gameplaywise, the enviroments look grey and boring, the game is way too long for it's own good, it's easier to get into complete fail states than in the other games and the story went completly off the deep end, also Steve.

This and Zero are the reasons why I can't hate the change the series took with RE4 and how it basically said "Fuck the plot, this is about alien parasite terrorists now lol".

Why couldn't he beat the airplane fight? Injure it then hit the button. Don't you have access to a crate in the cockpit before the fight?

Underrated? The game is fucking terrible. Shit level design, shit story, shit monster design, shit characters. The game is shitty.

sorry

Insufficient ammo and healing supplies. If you don't come into that fight with enough stockpiled then you can't advance, nor can you get more resources. It's a notorious fight for being completely impassible for lots of people for that reason.

I think it's because it was stuck on the dreamcast for over a year and by the time it came to PS2 people had moved on perhaps ?

I actually really liked it , not more then RE2 but it was easily tied as second best game in the series. Certainly a better game then Nemesis (which is over-rated as often as code veronica is overlooked). Perhaps the lack of a number next to the name left people thinking it was a side story ?

The world will never know I guess.

A brief series ranking - Resident Evil 2 - Code Veronica - Resident Evil Remake - Resident Evil 4 - Resident Evil 3/Nemesis - Resident Evil 1 -Resident Evil Revelations1/2 - Resident Evil 0 - Resident Evil 5 - Resident Evil 6

I always figured because it was released on a dying system, and the first to release on a non-sony platform. But this did eventually release on everything in the form of an "X" version.

I agree OP..
This game is for me the true RE3 and not the low budget Nemesis title..

I think this game didnt share the exposure because it didn't have 3 in the title and it was also released on the ill fated dreamcast..

By the time it was ported to other consoles, Remake and Zero was already the buzz..

It's a shame.. I still believe Verónica had a great story and it was very entertaining!!

It's my least favourite classic RE. These days I prefer Zero over it.

It's still fun, but after playing RE 2 and 3 you could see some weird decisions in the gameplay department. Take walking up and down the stairs fir example; you had to tap the action button to perform it. That was pretty weird. It had an interesting villain (Creepy twins stare at each other after feeding bug to ants) but after that it kind became strange.

Also Steve Burnside. Fuck that guy.

It's in the same ballpark as 1-3 in terms of quality, but I can understand why most people like it less. First, the story is noticeably more cheesy and ridiculous than 2 or 3 (see Alfred and his laugh, Steve, Wesker being alive again somehow). Second, I found the layout much more convoluted than the other games, and it seemed like there was even more backtracking than usual. There is probably a more optimized way of doing things, but that wasn't my experience the first time through. Lastly, I don't think the environments are quite as memorable as the mansion (which does make a fun appearance in code veronica), the police station, or other areas in Raccoon City.

I expected to like it less than I did. I'd personally put it above 1 for sure and maybe 3, but certainly not 2 or REmake. I haven't played Zero yet, so I'm anxiously awaiting the chance to play it in a couple weeks.

You don't need a single healing item for that encounter, since he's easy to avoid. You only need enough ammo to weaken him enough to push him all the way back with the crate, and if you haven't hurt him enough, you can try again after a recharge.

It's really just an ammo issue, and it doesn't take much.

Not underrated. Shit was HOT like sexy fire when it came out i remember IGN gave it like a 9.5 or something.

Bigger question is why the fuck isnt the WS version not on steam yet. Capcom porting everything to steam and they already did the 'remaster' when they did RE 4

Wait was this friend not picking all those green herbs the in the game. Hell running up to the to building Steve almost gets cooked in there was multiple places to pick up green herbs. So sooooo many herbs.

Just hit the button if he gets too close and pepper him with handgun bullets or bolts if u have to do that. Run around a little hit the button when he gets close and repeat.

Now the dad with the poison I can understand if you didn't bring enough to kill him but even that boss gives you a rifle to kill it in 4 shots.

Fuck RE3 over anything.

I'm confident RE3 would come above CV and RE0 if we were to put it to a vote. GAF actually thinks quite highly of it, which they should because it's fucking great.

I have never really understood how this fight is singled out so much. The game is hardly stingy with the supplies up to that point. Every RE game has moments like this, it's not like the rest of them let you farm for ammo.

Wasn't there a contractual reason why this game wasn't called Resident Evil 3? I forgot what it was, but then they ended up swapping names with the then sidestory game Nemesis.

And years later we found out it was the 'true' RE3

That's been "known" for many years, and only recently it came to light, that while it's true that Nemesis was never supposed to be RE3, neither was CV. The real game in development as RE3 at the time underwent many many complete overhauls until it became RE4. (And DMC somewhere along the way.)

At least that's the short story version.

RE3 was a retreat of the RE2 city setting, but it's much more fun to play imo and it brought more additions to the base gameplay than CV ever did.

Nah, nothing contractual. If I'm not mistaken the reason was that when the PS2 was first showcased, Capcom decided to switch their current RE3 project to the new console. As that greatly delayed the development, they decided to make the Nemesis spinoff title for PS1 a numbered game instead.

CVX is a piece of shit by any metric, and massively overrated as far as I'm concerned. Single handedly killed the classic series.

RE1-3 and REmake run laps around it any day of the goddamn week, and are amazing games that stand the test of time.

Newsbot usually shows up to answer this question.

Long story short, this isn't true, CV was never supposed to be RE3.

One of my personal favorites. It's pretty much like all the other ones, but when it came to story and overarching narrative, the game just says "fuck it" and gets weird as hell.
Way better game than Zero or 3.

RE3 is awesome brah, the city setting was absolutely fantastic

nah. It wanted to be an action game despite still having the survival horror controls. Story and setting were also kinda generic by RE standards (others like CVX might be goofy/crazy, but at least not tired).
And Nemesis was handled poorly compared to Mr. X prior and Lisa Trevor later.

I love it, mostly for the plot, music, characters and bosses, even Darkside Chronicles did an amazing remade part with orchestrated music and better visuals, Alfred being well represented

Don't forget that the save comes after the point of no return. You're either able to get past or you reset, because there's no other option. It also comes unannounced after the climactic final moments on the base, where you can use up lots of your resources. I don't think CV is at all a bad game, but that particular fight is awful design.

No lies detected. But REmake is still the BEST.
