Why is Sony not championing PS4 superior tech?

I posted this in the X1 DC rumor thread:
I was reading the newspaper and saw an Xbox One article and they posted some specs:

Notice the GPU at 800 MHz.

Does this means much?

they'll trot this one out in time. when excitement is lower months after e3, maybe right around the release to pump up the hype. gotta hold back some for future use!

Because there's no evidence of it so far. Until we see direct feed of a multiplatform game running on final hardware. If anything, I would guess the show floor first impressions are that the One is more powerful because Forza looks great and DriveClub looks crap. So I think it's wise to stay quiet about this for now.

They are the leaked specs which have never been repudiated by any source (except unconfirmed reports of a GPU downclock here on GAF). I doubt MS randomly gave them out to that newspaper, so they're probably using those leaked specs for the article.

Because in the end, the difference between the two will be minimal, much like it was last generation.

Wrong, the difference is much clearer this time ......... PS4 has a much superior GPU and vastly better RAM.

The difference will become much more apparent over the life cycle as the Xbox inferior GPU and RAM starts to hurt it.

because the SYSTEM is not 50% more powerful,
the GPU is 50% more powerful... the system as a whole less so

and real life is different than theory

PS4 vs Xbone is like an Aygo vs Yaris match on Nurburing. Not really a heated battle and many just don't care.

PS4 only has 50% of the HDMI ports.

Of course MS could champion the Kinect specs, but nobody really cares about those.

Correct me if I am wrong but one of those is HDMI in and the other is HDMI out right? So you can hook up things while using your xbone effectively making it a splitter.

Yeah probably but to me was weird since all the other specs were in line with what MS announced.

It means prettier visuals and better running games.

It's not everything, but it's definitely not nothing.
Prettier visuals and running better could also be linked to other factors like how far along the game is (or how rushed it was) and the ease of development.

Ease of development is a great thing, but it's pointless to try to sell your console to the masses on the basis that this aspect of the console will lead to better games.

Because sony is working hard to make its beloved stupid stylish/conceptual commercials that show neither games footages nor a single reason to buy its products.

OP
I have been console gaming all my life and I am tech lingo illiterate when it comes to computer parts and specs (the main reason why I am not much of a PC gamer)

the average folk wants to plug it to a TV, insert game and just play

Jack Tretton said specifically to view their games side to side with the competition. Thats how you sell it at this point.

He also seems to think GTA5 will be something else on it, so thats one of the comparisons I'm most interested in.

At this point SCE is going to let the games do all the talking. I would assume that consumers who are looking into buying the "more powerful console" could do a simple google search and find the countless tech articles that indicate the PS4 is more powerful. Again nothing says our console is more powerful than showing games that would indicate as such.

The strongest [mainstream] console hasn't won a gen since the snes.

Gamers just haven't been shown to care en masse

This is misleading. The PS2 was the most powerful console at launch. It pretty much killed off the Dreamcast which was the weaker console at the time.

It's not necessarily that gamers don't care about graphics, it's just that the games will ultimately decide the fate of a console. Gamers will go where all the best games are, even if that means the console with less power. Graphics don't really mean much when all the games are on another console.

I do wish they would push a little harder by saying their machine is superior.

Perception for those not in the know could see the PS4 at $100 cheaper than the Xbone and then think it's probably not as good/powerful.

I think the problem is games are going to look pretty similar at launch so it's hard to talk about how much more powerful your system is and not really having anything to back it up.

Maybe save it for next E3.

The same reason Sony likely withheld announcing and showing more games-they only needed to show "enough" and still walked away looking far better with no DRM and $100 cheaper. They didn't need to do anything more to win the hearts of gamers.

Because to most people 8GB GDDR5 RAM doesn't really mean anything.

Sony was in front already what with Microsofts implosion so they didn't need a narrow appeal to the tech heads.

Unless the XB1 has ports similar to the PS3 Bayonetta fiasco, then yea that will hurt MS. But they won't so it's not really an advantage.

Prepare yourself man. Bayonetta at least has the same res on ps3. I will laugh if will see ps4 games at the double res of xboxone. Bayonetta in comparison could be a masterpiece porting.

They clearly learned from every mistake they did with the PS3. Marketing the hardware won't do shit, I still don't know what difference the Cell made in the end.

Market the price and the anti DRM policies and done.

Did MS release the official specs for the Xbone GPU yet? If they haven't then it's obvious that it is considerably weaker compared to the PS4 going by the earlier leaks.

I'm sure the guys at Eurogamer's Digital Foundry will rule pretty swiftly on this after the release of both consoles.

Microsoft's next PR disaster - at least among enthusiasts and GAFers - would be the losing of DF's head-to-heads on the next-gen games.

Yeap. He said from what he's seen and heard, the third party multiplatform titles will do the talking. Which makes me think the PS4 already has superior versions of certain games.

Certain games? Should be for every game, even if only better in a small way. Performance should be better/more stable or graphical effects should be better.

They haven't. They didn't even specify the type of ram, though the specs have been unofficially confirmed. They're not releasing specs or promoting them because they know the console is a good degree less powerful than the PS4. That's the main reason cloud processing has become such a prominent part of their PR circus.

Is Sony hiding something? I noticed the E3 specs do not mention the 176gb/s GDDR5 bandwidth any more, is the rumors that Sony has to downclock again true?

Considering the new and revised PS4 specs sheet released just a few days ago still shows the same GPU specs (including an exact number of 1.84 TFLOPS), they couldn't have downclocked it as this would reduce that number.

Sony will most likely bring more focus to specs when the differences become more visible. They are not at this point, practically nothing is being demoed on actual consoles at E3. Saying "we are more powerful" is most likely also not all that effective when they currently have much better and more powerful arguments to convince people of buying a PS4 over the Xbone.

(8 cores Xeon)

The Xbone has an AMD processor (the same, in fact, as the PS4), not Intel (Xeon).
