Why is the dualshock 3 still so expensive?

Rich!

I bought a PS3 preowned for cheap recently. Console is fine. Controller is fucked.

Even to this day, they're near £50 on Amazon UK, game, and other sites, £30 preowned at game, CEX, etc (I want new, ideally), and there are countless fakes that make buying online via ebay and such a nightmare. The DS4 is actually cheaper than the DS3 in most locations. It's insane.

If I got a DS4, how much functionality would I actually lose using it on the PS3? I know rumble doesn't work on the PS3 via a DS4, that's fine. What else? Ideally, a DS4 would be better if crucial functionality isn't lost.

Any other options?

You'll only lose rumble. Maybe Sixaxis too? Not sure, but it's not like it's a very common feature on PS3 games.

Not a single game I own uses it! I did hear somewhere that certain games don't work with a DS4. Not sure if that's correct.

I thought you'd lose the wireless functionality, no?

Some games miss some inputs (Fallout I think).

you guys pay around 75 dollars for a controller? jeez.

ask the queen for some money, not like she's doing anything useful with it.

they are high quality controllers :/ Sony should cut the price on those though.

Would still recommend buying a DS3 instead of 4. Batterylife is better and you'll be more frustrated without the Home button and the occasional good game that has sixaxis implementation (Killzone 2)

Ebay sellers have new ones for 30£. Just make sure it's NOT shipping from China, as those are 90% fake ones.

How fucked exactly is the controller?

Because one cheap option would be to try and repair it.

My PS3 DS3 recently started malfunctioning. Whenever I'd try to turn it on, its red lights would just blink for a while and then go off. PS3 wouldn't recognize it anymore, and it wouldn't take a charge either. Resetting didn't help, as the PS3 wouldn't even acknowledge the existence of the controller.
So I opened it up, and a couple of vias on the flexible circuit appeared corroded. Simply changing the flexible circuit resurrected the pad, and it cost me less than 2 bucks on eBay (with free delivery from Hong Kong).
