so i finally catched up and watched episode 8 of season 5
and finally, red john was revealed and later killed by jane. but why are they continuing the story after that ? i mean the whole show was about his revenge and that ending would have been perfect. not sure if i want to watch the later episodes.

anyone think the later episodes are worth watching ?

Network shows don't exist to serve one general story. They'll go as long as key members want/ratings allow.

I casually watched over the first few years and they frankly ruined a really solid season finale by continuing the story past season 3.

There have only been a few episodes, but the new setup is far more entertaining. Show feels more alive than it has in years, Red john was played out bullshit like three years ago anyway. The characters are strong enough to work on their own.
You do realize Red John won't actually be dead right? Lady at the church got away and Jane strangled the guy instead of shooting him in the head like he shoulda done. Next ratings slump Red John will be back with bells on.

i think he stays dead or heller comes up with "he never was red john to begin with". tbh i dont know if ill keep watching as the only episodes i really loved were the red john centric ones. i saw the others as filler episodes. does a new "big bad" come up or is it a weekly crime show again with no focus ?

Yeah. Not going to happen.

Here's why.

1.
They killed off Red John. He held him down, until his last fucking breath. He is dead.
2.
They have done a ton of exit style interviews about the end of this arc. They would not lie like this.
3.
There are a few actors leaving the show this year, the ratings have been starting to slump. This is a way for them to reboot the series in an attempt to bring new viewers in and bring back some old ones.
4.
Generally procedural shows like The Mentalist don't have these large stories, it was the easiest way for them to get to a more simplistic episode by episode show.
5.
They let the woman live and made the list too keep the fire alive. Red John is dead, but his followers live on. There is a new mystery, a list and new mysteries to discover. Bringing back Red John will not offer more than a cheap trick compared to the allure of new unsolved mysteries.

Personally I'm not sold on the new Metnailst yet. I love the show, and really like
how the Red John arc ended.
I hope the show continues to be good and find it's stride in this new direction.

It's regularly getting between 9 and 11 million viewers according to Wikipedia, which puts it around the top 20 shows on TV. Why do you think it's still on the air?

Well, I stopped watching around S4 and only came back this season for Red John, but I think I won't be watching anymore, I don't know. I guess the show is still getting a lot of love from it's loyal followers that keeps the rating going.

Because people still watch it.

Following the Red John arc, they've essentially rebooted the show. It picks up two years later with
Jane on the run before the FBI gets their hooks into him and presses him into service investigating federal crimes.

The reboot is actually a welcome change. They've gone back to a more light-hearted prankster Jane with Theresa tagging along (who is also less morose). I dig it. There's no reason they can't continue Jane's story.

The end of the Red John arc was a relief. It went on too long. I like New Jane.

1. Red John is a super ridiculous, semi-broken character. He's a Batman tier, think of everything prep-time god (frankly, as portrayed, the fact that Jane ever beat him was nothing but contrived rubbish). It could easily be written in that he slowed his heart rate to fake death, in an attempt to save his own life
2. The would lie. They are lying.
3. Only the most boring characters are leaving. "I'm not pregnant" seated Grace might as well have left last season.
4. Yes and it will work, but when it stops working Jane will pick up the phone, and the stupid voice will be on the other end.
5. Cheap tricks work, it's the only way Jane get's anything done.

The episode after
he kills Red John
was amazing. Either way I'm somewhat expecting another twist in the story at some point.

This is the most broken villain ever in network tv.

I'm so utterly confident about how incorrect you are. Are you willing to ban/avatar bet on this? You seem to have such a good grasp on the entertainment industry.

TV has it's cheap tricks,. but sometimes there's only so much you can do. This is not nor was not a lie, and will not be reversed.

Btw from one of many many interviews where they made this explicit.

Even though Red John is dead, his disciples and the Blake Association are still out there. Will we hear from them again?

Heller: I never say never, but I would say I think the audience and the story demands that we step away from that trope for a while. The trouble with these sorts of stories where you're playing tricks on the audience, with who-is-it mysteries, is you can get way too mysterious. There are people who said all the way along that Patrick Jane is Red John. When you've got that kind of elaborate thinking out there, it's dangerous to come back to that story unless you're coming back full force, because then maybe will start thinking, "Oh, maybe Red John's not dead." Red John is dead.

Also,
you don't kill off so many good possible bad guys and important characters to the story, and then bring back red john. We lost so many good possible bad guys, they even closed out the Visualize arc.

This was absolutely final. Red John is dead, but who needs him when you have The Blake Association.

Don't be silly, I'm just saying what I think.

Bradley Whitford was a better Red John. Much better.

Agreed. I'm not knocking Xander Berkley, he's a great actor and did the best with the material given. But the way Whitford played the character and how everything went down, it was far superior.

I mean, you could literally just watch that final scene with Whitford, and then skip everything else and just pick up with the last couple of episodes, and like you miss almost nothing*

* Except the Blake Association stuff :/
