Why is the Steam domain being squatted on?

Whoever owns the domain is making it inconvenient to the millions of Steam users who have to type in store.steampowerd every time.

The fact it's not even being used for anything productive is even worse.

I just use the Steam client. No web search needed. Or if I do go through web I just type steam, and click the link.

I've never even tried to type steam.com and I've been a registered user for over 10 years. I just assumed it would redirect to steampowered. Funny.

Well, thats a wild accusation. Its not domain squatting.

Cybersquatting (also known as domain squatting), according to the United States federal law known as the Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act, is registering, trafficking in, or using a domain name withbad faith intent to profit from the goodwill of a trademark belonging to someone else.

Domain Name: STEAM.COM

Now, there is no need to point out that steam came way later, right?

Id keep that domain any day, just like id keep sex.com, vodka.com etc.

For reference, this is what used to be on the site back when it was in use:

There are plenty of convenient ways to get the page without typing in the whole thing. I think even just steampowered redirects with store. with steampowered being appended to it. I don't want to look up the dates but there is a chance that the person had the domain before Valve was getting their stuff up and running. IDK. I wouldn't be surprised if the person actually has it for personal use or something and wont sell to Valve at all or just wants a crazy amount of money.

Either way, at this point I'm sure Valve's site is successful enough in ranking and well known that the other site doesnt matter. I only tried to go to that other site for the first time today. I actually type out steampowered.com

To be fair, "squatting" would imply intent to capitalize on Steam's popularity by holding the domain hostage at an inflated price. The domain was registered in 1994, well before Steam was a thing. Whether or not Valve have made inquiries towards the domain, and whatever reason the owner in that case had for turning them down, I think only Gaben knows.

It's not being squatted on in the critical sense, but it's a great case of somebody who has just had the domain for years and is unwilling to sell it to a videogame company that has nothing to do with any sort of actual steam works.
