Why is there no thread? Mario Kart Wii ONLINE announced for Q1 2008

How come the character models have such a lack of detail compared to the Smash Bros ones? I'm sure the Wii could handle those models in this situation.

I suppose it was the same on GC, though. The Smash Bros models on there were more detailed than any of the models in later GC Mario games.

Online battle seals it for me. I'm not piss ant whiner about snakers in MKDS, but it would make things far more bearable if I could retire to some battle mode online instead of just racing.

And to whomever mentioned it yet...yes, Block Fort must return. Besides, they have a remake of Yoshi Falls in the game, why not bring back Block Fort a third time. ^_^

Isn't Block Fort in the DS version battle mode?

Cause this time your gonna have more than 8 racers on the screen

Because who on earth would / should care? Honestly.

It is, which is why I said bring it back a third time. It started in MK64, then in MKDS, I'd like to see it in MKWii as well. ^_^

In fact, Block Fort is the only map I play on when playing MKDS battle mode to begin with. :P

It would be nice to see Double Decker from MK64 as well, that was fun too.

This looks.... very early. VERY early. Probably why they did a trailer tease instead of a blowout of info.
But even still, to all those who say this is looking like Double Dash, look at the draw distance and background detail. Nothing in Double Dash came close to that.

As long as there is an option to eliminate snaking (e.g. remove all speed boosts from power slides for a game), this will last a long time for online play. Otherwise, it'll end up just like Mario Kart DS. "Fun" for snakers and no fun for non-snakers, except with friends.

They won't get my money this time around if it has snaking.

Comparison with Mario Kart Double Dash

I think the major difference currently is with the lighting. Otherwise, the character model looks almost the same as MK DD.

This game better be very very early still and gets pushed back until holiday 2008.

I only saw 2 retro tracks, the rest were new. Peach Beach and Yoshi Falls got updates. There was a track similar to Moo Moo Farm in that it has cows but the cows are on the track this time and the track is different. Wario Mines looks awesome. A new Mario Circuit. Some Mushroom/cave track. A mountain track (maybe the same as the mushroom cave track).

Anyway, yeah, I think I see 12 racers in that one screen. This game should be awesome.

Day 1.

I just hope the battle mode is not reminescent of the DS battle mode, which was a bit shallow. Bring back the friggin' feather and more obstacles to hide behind.

Because Smash Bros doesn't have to have a "large" environment built for it. It also doesn't need 360 degrees of modelling as you typically only see the SSBB environments from a single side so that the backs of everything can get stripped out. Nor does it have half the polys going to the vehicle that the character sits in.

They confirmed online play for this game, but still no official word on SBB: Brawl even though it comes out in December...

Nintard that I am, Mario Kart is the one core franchise that just doesn't do it for me. I loved the SNES one, but everything since has left me feeling dirty and used.

The graphics look really disappointing. They have 5 to 8 months to impress me, or at least meet my expectations.

Well, you'd think thats not a problem since its running on Double Dash's engine.

Also he could just mean Online play features up to 6 people

I hate you guys.

The game looks good or bad based on graphics? Online, double dash + graphics, steering wheel controls.

What the hell did you guys expect?

The graphics are disappointing, but I can live with them if the game's as good as Mario Kart DS.

Double Dash's graphics were fine to me, I'm not sure what they'd need to improve on.
Maybe they'll have split screen mode without losing any trackside detail this time.

I was really happy hearing Reggie said that there will be more characters (= more karts at one time).
So I'm not really disappointed about the graphic, it is much more important having stable 60fps, a wide view and more karts on the screen.

Absolutely, if it's widescreen at 60fps it can have the graphics from the DS version as far as I'm concerned. MK is my favourite game series of all time, I'm so into this Wii version.

This game will be mine. Just like the ones before with the exception of n64 one. Only way to make not buy it would be to remove splitscreen multiplayer. That would kill the game for me. Not that interested in online play and singelplayer have never been that awsome in mario kart games.

Multiplayer with your friends on a couch is where it is at.

The wheel I just don't care about. Having played tony hawk, need for speed and excite truck, I know you do not need that to waggle your cart. :lol

Online Battle is nice, but they need to add something. like King of the Hill; a constant battlemode; you die -> you get replaced by someone who is connection (spectating, you know what that is, Nintendo? :Þ) and the Winner stays in and gets e-peni.....points...

Its just dawned on me, with this wheel we have shitty motion turning, great.

Really, I just hope they redo item distribution in this game. I'm not sure how MK DS handled it, but one of things I disliked about DD was that it was always advantageous to sit in 2nd place, rather than racing out to first, thanks to the rampant blue shells. I don't recall this being nearly as much of a problem in the SNES or 64 versions.

Eh? MKDS had great battle mode options.

I'm pretty happy about this game. The visuals are pretty average at this stage, but it doesn't really matter given the style. Online is a big bonus, hopefully the controls are good.

I think it has more to do with style choice. Smash is a fighting game, so they want to make it look gritty. Also, Sakurai has to find a balance for smash in which characters like Samus and Link will appear to belong with characters like Mario and Kirby. Since Melee came out before anything else on the GC, Smash got to make its own rules, and Sakurai decided making mario gritty would be better than making Link toony (ironically enough, EAD went the other way). There's no question Wii could display more detailed character models (i.e. denim on Mario's overalls) since this was done as far back is Melee on the cube.

From what I recall, Nintendo has stock models of all these characters that they switch into every Mario universe spin off. Tennis, Golf, Baseball, Party, and Kart are all use these models and they are all designed in this style. It's a style that they consiously decied would fit the Mario univers, and be easy to whore to spin off games. At least that's how it was on the Cube. The models in MarioKart Wii actually look to be the same character models from MarioKart DD, so Nintendo could be sticking with these stock models :\

Otherwise, the graphics are much better than DD if you don't look at the characters. The environment textures especially. Also, the geometry looks to have increased in the scenery and the draw distance looks great. The Karts seem to have been remade as well, and they look a bit smoother and more detailed with better textures. Note stuff like the hubcaps. The effects are way better too, check out the sparks coming out of Wario's exhaust versus the DD sparks in the shot above it

why no excite truck control scheme why why why why why

Remember yall', Reggie said this game will have "a large variety of controll types" so im thinking he may be hinting a classic controller option like Smash Bros. is providing.

A post in this thread reminded me of an interesting point I was thinking over while playing MKDS earlier today: is the use of old MK tracks in new MK games a good or bad thing? Normally, I'd say any sign of developer laziness is a bad thing. But it's not that clear cut. Outside of those big circles, ovals, or figures 8, Mario Kart tracks have a lot of personality to them; when they're good, they're memorable. It would suck to not be able to revisit old classics and play them online.

I'm glad I saw a DS track or two in there -- the game probably had the best original track design of the series. Why not enjoy them again with analog control? Now if it allows the dev team to slack off and not think of great new ideas, it would suck. But MKDS gives me hope that they can do both.

They will probably include a few of the Arcade courses.(some are nice some are ugle)

That last stage look like a underwater rainbow road, really nice.
Online will most likely have your Miiface above you.

It's a good thing, for any racer probably. More tracks is always better. The only way it would be a bad thing is if new courses are actually cut to include the old ones. But we know to expect 16 new courses or whatever with every MarioKart, so we'll know if they slacked

I hope the Tick Tock clock level returns. I'd love to see the clock setting in post N64 splendor
