Why is xenophobia re: USA ok?

In my travels, I notice this attitude among Aussies. Brits, and especially Germans, thinking it's okay to bash Americans right up to An Americans face. They hold onto outdated stereotypes of Americans being ignorant, loud, unrefined, arrogant, and trouble makers when on holiday...
I'm sure Aussies, Brits and Germans bash Aussies, Brits and Germans to their faces too. But they don't get sensitive about it because it's fun to take the piss out of each other.

I want no one taking the piss out of me, and I want nothing to do with piss taking, ever, at all. I'm not into that. Fucking weirdo europeans and their weird sexual fetishes.

Good argument. Oh, look, some sort of graph where we're number 1 at something.

Stay hating.

We'll stay winning.

they hate us
cause they ain't us

Well that explains it.

Yes, having lived for most of my high-school life here and currently going into college clearly explains it. For all i care, both Russian and USA hegemony can go into a housefire together. Having the unique perspective of both societies(I have also been to US), i would say that you are hardly better in regards to realpolitik.

Do you also remember that time you lost World War II?

Must be embarrassing to be on the wrong side of that one.

Because of shitty braggin that already happened in this thread. I've said once that I would move there, but god if I don't regret saying that, I'll rather go to Canada.

Yes, im very sad about something that happened a few decades before i was born.

I doubt you have had a unique perspective of the US. Most Americans Haven't.

Notice that i said the unique "perspective of both societies", meaning, i have actually been to these two countries. Can't say the same thing for the folks in this thread though.

I am from the United States and personally, I do a lot of US bashing. The reason I do it is simply because A LOT of US stereotypes are true. The whole fat American thing is definitely a problem in this country and it is only getting worse. I feel like the more attention we bring to the problems our country faces (even if through stereotypical jokes and crude humor), the sooner things might get done.

Most influential country, thus biggest target. It annoys me that so many people I know say stupid shit just because it's anti-American. One coworker is literally a Doctor of Neuroscience, but fully believes that Americans are unusually uneducated, have no sense of humour, no cultural value etc. This person uses an iPhone, loves movies and knows little/nothing about history; doesn't notice the irony. One friend insists that "Real cheese doesn't exist in America, they don't sell it there".

I knew a girl who didn't know that America was a British colony. She was asking me what Independence Day is about.

She was from New Zealand...when I said I was surprised at this...a Norwegian guy said I should not be surprised because people in the world don't pay attention to or care about USA,.and that I'm such a typical American for expecting a non American to know that America was a British colony.

He then said that I'm probably ignorant about Russia, which is "just as influential as the US", so it's hypocritical to think everyone should know about America but not Russia/

I'm Canadian and I know more about America than Canada. Especially politics.

Heck, in school America was the big thing when it came to western history.

where are the Germans, Aussies and Brits in this story?

So much patriotism in these threads. So much that even minorities, the ones who get fucked over all the time, chime in to pledge their allegiance to a crying eagle. USA! USA! USA!

I mean...it just sounds like you were having a conversation with some dumb people.

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

You cannot spill a drop of American blood without spilling the blood of the whole world.... We are not a nation, so much as a world.

Literally weeping red white and blue tears.

he was saying that while

using his iphone
wearing his nikes
waiting to get home to his PC/Mac running his fav american operating system
launch his fav american web browser
use Google to search how much the USA sucks

then watched a movie made in Hollywood

I'm gonna start this new art aesthetic of like leather daddies with american flags behind them and eagles crying and shit. I think I need to watch Al Pacino Cruising tonight. Fuck I'm getting obsessed with this aesthetic and also the aesthetic of greek posing.

America fucking rules!

In group discussions! Sounds like some made-up shit.

Unless those Euros and Aussies were in America at the time, in which case why wouldn't their focus be on the country they're travelling in? Not to mention you guys do some supremely dumb shit in the political arena so it can be very interesting to discuss the ramifications at times.

I'm sorry, did Florida Man have his passport taken away and nobody told us?

Didn't a couple more Americans get arrested just the other day for getting naked at some Cambodian temple and causing a scene?

1. Yes, group discussions in social settings during my travels. Nothing strange about it at all. You have some weird ideas.

2. "you guys do some supremely dumb shit in the political arena" - umm, okay completely ignoring how divided and diverse America is politically and culturally. People who generalize America as if it's some small country come across as being obtuse.

3. Yeah couple American girls got naked...one isolated incident...now are you forgetting the countless Brits who instigate drunk fights and have sex in the dorm rooms while others are trying to sleep?

People have this stereotype that British people are all proper, refined, etc but you go out and travel and you will see that after Israeli travelers (who are the worst...they are regularly banned from hotels/hostels), British people tend to be the biggest trouble makers. Americans these days are generally pretty respectful and open minded when traveling abroad these days.

I don't mind it at all as an American. What do they really know anyways? I mean, just look at this:
whats wrong with celebrating the greatest empire in human history?

we gave you the iphone, the internet, the computer you are on right now is running an operating system designed by us, you want to watch our movies, our music, worried about our stock market at wallstreet, united nations builds its hq here, you grew up eating our food in mcdonalds and burgerkings no matter what country you were in, we destroyed the crumbling british empire in 1776 and saved the world in ww2 from hitler and took you to space. pretty much your entire modern existence is built around something America gave to you.

but celebrating it? nooooooo, that just hurts too much doesnt it?

Wow, that's a pretty big claim. What are you basing it on? And please don't embarrass the concept of statistics by saying it's based on your own experiences travelling.

im glad you can speak for many others in the thread

ive lived in many former soviet countries for many years

and then of course lived in america

ive been to finland twice!

you guys are just too weird that's all
because it dampers the glare from the sun reflecting of your face if you have high cheekbones.

rest of the world can keep calling our brilliance "weird," and we will continue to provide you with the technology that drives your life.

Most discussions revolve around Australia, people are quick to show all the dangerous animals that can kill you lol. It´s just fun, roll with it.

That's usually tongue in cheek or positive in some way, like 'woah how do you survive you must be tough'. American stereotypes in Aus are often very insulting, fat, lazy, dumb, ignorant, useless Americans.

I'd guess that a lot of it is coming from people who are Americans honestly. The comments you complain about I hear all the time from people who live here (I admit I'm guilty of the 'Murica complaint though it's targeted at a certain mindset rather than Americans in general.

Well. Firstly, you're largely (geddit) very, very fat and ugly. Secondly, your accents are mostly annoying. And thirdly, you have Republicans.

Well, then i suppose i should thank you for all the valuable insight that you provided in this thread.
/s
Instead of taking the piss based on ignorance that is.

there is no valuable insight i have to give

the first post pretty much covered it

you seem to be taking this more personally than most others

i couldnt give less of a shit

It's always funny when people say this, yet they somehow continue to post despite not caring.

I wish people would realise that "generalisation" is not a dirty word.

There's a lot of dumb shit that - generally - happens more often in America than it does in other countries and there's nothing wrong with making light of that fact.

By the way, the fact that you were compelled to make this thread when the same applies to Japan, Australia, Russia or "the middle east" is pretty funny.
