Why isn't Folklore on PSN?

For those who are not familiar with or able to remember the game, it was developed by Game Republic (defunct in 2011) and published by Sony. It received pretty decent reviews in a time where the PS3 lacked exclusive games back in 2007.

There are other PS3 games that are missing on PSN (e.g. Heavenly Sword, Socom 4, Warhawk), but Folklore was pretty unique and it would be cool to have it available digitally. Is it simply because Game Republic went under? The PS3 demo is still up along with its DLC, so :/

I'd bet a lot of games from the early transition of consoles going digital are probably hung up by some sort of contract or license. A lot of contracts in the video game industry were poorly planned ahead and a digital version might cause them to have to pay out more than they think its' worth to get a digital version going.

As I recall from similar discussions about Resistance and R&C: Tools of Destruction, early PS3 releases would require quite a bit of work to repackage into a PSN titles even if developers familiar with the source code were available. At this point a PS4 port would probably be more feasible, but I doubt there's enough demand for Sony to bother.

I think it's because it doesn't have trophies or something, which is a stupid reason for not having it available on the PS store.

Great game. Sony should definitely put it on PSN. I miss Game Republic. Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom is also a good game by them.

That can't be why, because Resistance: Fall of Man is on there.

Seems like stupidly poor planning on Sony's part, but this seems most likely to me. A lot of early PS3 games are not available digitally and this would explain why.

Paging Totobeni.

But yeah, I hope they do a PS4 remaster for this and Demons' Souls.

Edit: I don't really have a PS3 anymore.

If they can add trophies to PS2 games, they should add them to games like this.

Or just put it on the store without them.

Like seriously, who the fuck cares if an old game doesn't have trophies? Adding trophies to old games is a worthless effort in my opinion as it's a waste of money and time. We could have all the PS2 classics games on PS4 right now if Sony weren't fucking dumbasses about having to add trophies to every single PS2 game.

That's surprising, maybe they make some exceptions. Or they might just not care about putting Folklore on the store because it's old and niche as shit aka they've forgotten it.

Warhawk launched on PSN, and is still on the store. We're you thinking of something else?

It's a shame Folklore came out at such a bad time. It had to compete with one of the best fall lineups ever, when there weren't many PS3s out there. It had the best use of the Sixaxis to this day, I'd love for another game in the same universe with the same mechanics, just more polished.

The weird thing is that you can still buy all the DLC, so the money is going somewhere, most likely Sony only. This might indicate that it isn't a problem of royalties to a non-existent developer any longer.

Its a 2007 game, and only around 2010 (IIRC) did Sony mention that retail games would also have their own digital releases alongside, at launch. The marketing banner was DAY 1 Digital, or something like that.

I enjoyed the demo a lot, but never got around to purchasing a copy.

Yep I agree. I'm still bummed out about Games Republic closing down...

All this talk of GR just reminded me I have to finish Dark Mist on Hard and Majin

Very repetitive game, but damn if the main theme didn't kick ass.

I don't agree on your first point but yeah, the music in this game is pretty great

I'd post examples if I had more time but Fairy Waltz, Trial, Between Life and Death and Where the Soul Goes are amazing tracks.

Lots of very early PS3 titles aren't able to be released digitally for some reason, it's weird because some launch and early console titles like Resistance and Uncharted 1 are on the store but not others (Folklore, Ratchet:TOD).

Looks like it got some excellent reviews. I'm interested in Maijin and also in this. Is either of them a particularly violent game?

I haven't played Majin beyond the demo, but I don't think it's any more violent than, say, Ico. Folklore is not violent at all, although younger players might find of the Folk designs creepy. It's a bit like a fantasy version of Ghostbusters.

Is it really that good of a game? I bought it because I wanted an RPG, and was trying to play as many PS3 games as I could (this got me a big backlog, because of buying one and renting two a week).

I keep meaning to play it and guess I should put it near the top of my list. I've always wondered if it would be for me, though, because it seems a bit strange.

I actually bought this a good 6-8 months before I even got a PS3, simply because I was afraid it would be rare by the time the system got a solid pricecut. Looks like that was a good idea.

(I still haven't played it, of course, because I am dumb)

The game was virtually nowhere to be found a year after release. I remember looking everywhere for it, but never got it. :(

Man this game was so good. I want to replay it but the left stick on my dual shock 3 don't work and I don't think I can use a PS4 controller :(

I think this game gets a bit overhyped on gaf, but it still is an enjoyable experience. if you are interested and see this game at a garage sale pick it up. nothing great though

not sure why it's not on PSN yet, I'm sure some business logistics as this was an early ps3 game.

You do need to do some work to a PS3 disc title to make a downloadable version. That alone probably gates some older titles. I expect this is one of the reasons that the PS4 packages are exactly the same for download, or disc.

I lucked out when I found a brand new copy of this game still in the plastic in a random bargain bin about 5 years ago or so. Such a good game.

Which sucks because R&C: Tools of Destruction actually ended up getting a digital version years later in 2014

I love this game a lot. It has one of the best atmospheres out of any game I've ever played, even if the gameplay itself isn't that great.
