Why Link's Awakening DX will rock on 3DS' Virtual Console (video inside)

It's not so unusual. I also like the game better in monochrome (although I don't hate DX).

There's still people that only practice B&W photography. I think it was designed for B&W, and coloring it gives a not as special result.

It's also one of the few games (non-DX version) that I don't like how it's re-colored by default on GBC (especially since it's spoiling some puzzle, because movable parts are of a different color than fixed ones).

In fact, there's many GB games that are better, as far as I' concerned, kept in monochrome...
No doubt, the vast majority of them at least

The monochrome version of Link's Awakening was the first game I ever owned for my first system (a green GB). I got lucky - just bought it with the system because it was on special at Toys R Us, and didn't even know much about the series at the time. Ah, memories.

The 3DS has a Virtual Console?

Yes, but only for GB/GBC games right now. Although I would not be surprised to see the GBA added later on.

Some of the GB/GBC games I am interested in seeing is:

Final Fantasy Legends
Crystalis (If I canÂ’t get it for the Wii VC, IÂ’ll take it for this)
The Dragon Warrior remakes (I-III)

I'm hoping the GBC vc games are $4 and the GB vc games are $2 or $3, but since regular vc games from the wii might not make it, they might charge $6 for GBC games D:

I'll get Links Awakening day 1 , never played it so it's gonna be awesome.

Also Game Gear and Neo Geo Pocket Color. And hopefully Virtual Boy, though only for Wario Land.

Wow lol I have only played the GB version and that looks like LttP graphically :b Quite a difference...

But I sure liked the monochrome look too. Can't decide wich is better before actually trying it.

The only thing I like better in the original than in DX is the fact that you can skip text easier. No, I do not want you to tell me what a Goddess damned Guardian Acorn is every single time I pick one up, thank you very much.

Yes, but the 3DS wouldnÂ’t be able to display the technology of the Virtual Boy games.

Oh, waitÂ…

Good to see that the colours are accurately emulated and glad to see that I'm not the only one who knows that the GBA runs GBC games with a darker colour palette than normal!

I hope that the original B&W version of Link's Awakening gets put up as well, not only for the sake of allowing people to play the original version but for the sake of being able to do the select glitch!

This is why the original Black & White GB version of Link's Awakening rocks :D

Also, I hear that they don't allow you to select a colour palette for original GB games like you can when you play them on a GBC (and GBA). Hopefully the final version of the GB VC emulator will allow for that!

Also, wireless multiplayer support for GB/GBC/GBA games is a must! I would so rebuy Four Swords, Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland and Kirby & the Amazing Mirror again if I can play 4 player wireless :D Transfer Pak support will also be possible for N64 VC games now too (Mario Golf, Mario Tennis can be updated when the GBC games come out and the Pokemon Stadium games can now get released :D)

I wonder how they'll handle the Gameboy Printer stuff?

Still the greatest game ever made after all this time.

Will buy, I've never played the DX version - but I have played the original through twice, something I don't think I've ever done with another RPG/adventure game for no reason.

Hopefully like Super Gameboy you can choose the colour in the options so everyone will be happy and we can all play ballad of the wind-fish together in harmony.

One thing I'm curious about is how the screens are going to be used. Considering there's a blank touch screen with nothing on it for most of these games, there's a lot of potential for a Super Gameboy-style interface. I hope they don't waste it.
Or completely turn off the screen to offer longer lasting battery. I honestly hate the amount of DS games which show little more than a logo at best on one screen plenty of time which still needs to be illuminated thus sucking power...

6 for GBC? Come on 5 will be for GB 8 for GBC 10 for (eventually) GBA games.

Looks awesome, and I can already tell I'm going to spend a fuckton of money buying GB and GBC games that I already own just to play them on the 3DS. Screen looks gorgeous and using the analog pad for control is just awesome.

Turn the saturation on your TV down. Then you get the extra dungeon, and still get to live in your untainted world of monochrome purity.
To be picky, they didn't just change grays to color but redesigned beyond that. So play LADX in an original GB and there are still noticeable differences. I remember the tree pattern being one of the more obvious.

I'm going to guess they don't. I mean, they don't even bother with N64 Rumble Pak and Memory Pak, and those were muuuuch bigger deals.

Never played the DX version, so I'll get this as soon as I can.

Were there any other GB/GBC games confirmed so far? I wonder if there's a chance they'll put up the Dragon Quest GBC games.

I keep hearing about LA for 3DS. Is this something that's actually confirmed, or just some wet dream?

Cool stuff.
GBA is probably being withheld so they can keep releasing stuff through the years and don't fall in Wii VC situation.

Just speculation on my part though.

I'm more excited about replaying the Oracle games, although I did just pull my Oracle and LA carts back out the other day to play after Majora's Mask. I will surely buy them all on the eshop even though I have the carts. I just can't resist giving Nintendo my money when it comes to anything Zelda.

Not to me, Ray! Not to me!
Idk... Its just the purist in me. Link's Awakening is meant to be monochrome. The DX version always just looked so shitty to me.
while you're not a moron, you are a tiny bit insane. it seems you're aware of that, though. shine on.

This is what we have to get excited about in video games now? Slightly improved colors on a Gameboy game that's over 15 years old?

The Oracle games were my first Zelda experience when I was a kid, when I was first allowed a gameboy. And let me tell you, as someone who's played them again on DS on a flashcart, the backlit screen and the better controls are glorious. I will be buying this off the VC day one.

Fond memories of playing the original on my Game Boy Pocket with the slighty less green-ish tint. I have to say I prefer the monochrome edition, but I love the game either way!

I never liked hand held Zelda games. I tried a few and just could not get into them, because I am so use to playing them on a TV. I guess I can give this another try.

Wouldn't you get excited when your favorite movie from the 70s gets retouched and released on Blu-ray so you can stop watching that shitty VHS copy?

I can kind of appreciate pje122's opinion...To me, LA was a masterpiece of economy, as if it was using every byte of memory and every bit of the GB's power available to it to perfection. Adding "enhanced" graphics and all that kind of threw off that balance of a game perfectly matched to the hardware, for which maybe only 1 game per console/handheld qualifies.

Of course, it's coming for the frigging 3DS, so matching to the hardware doesn't have any meaning anymore...

Okay, I love Link's Awakening so damn much, and I don't even know why. I mean there's the obvious: it's an amazing game + childhood nostalgia to the max. But there's something else about it that just makes me totally and completely in love with it. I dunno how to explain it. It's just so damn charming!
