Why the ff7 announcement last year?

Nomura is co-director KH3. Also according to kagari this has been planned for over a year now... meaning it already passed planning stage and probably in full production.
Planning comes before pre-production and as Square has shown, pre-production can last several years. I see no evidence that the game is in full production. If it was we would've gotten more than a CG trailer + the FF7 logo followed by the words REMAKE.

I bet development still hasn't started

There's no way it has. The trailer listed Nomura as the director but he's still tied up with KH3. It's the same situation as Versus and XIII were in: the make a fancy CG trailer to drum up hype years before the game even goes into pre-production.

See ya all in 2025.

This is why I fucking hate CGI trailers. I want games to be revealed ideally within 12 months of release, and preferably with a gameplay trailer. Showing a CGI trailer when we're 2 years or more from release is just goddamn pointless.

I think it did make this announcement have more of an impact. The port announcement put a lot more people into the "they're never actually remaking it" mindset.

It's a bit like the Zelda Twilight Princess announcement, where everyone thought that after Wind Waker Nintendo will never go back to a realistically styled Zelda game.
Cue TP unveil and the crowd going nuts.

Works every time.

If Kagari knew about the remake over a year ago like she says then wouldn't they have been working on this remake for quite some time now?

I was hoping they would say "and available now for digital download on PSN" but now I have to try and stay alive long enough to see it's glorious return lol

I have a feeling of troll and was used to crush any rumours about a remake. I mean look at the reception last year. Sure as hell worked.

Maybe because in case there was a leak about FFVII for the PS4 they mislead us to believe it's the port.

No way he went all the way to Conference and sony gave him the time on the stage for nothing, it was all a cover up for the Remake.

I'd guess there were two reasons.

1: Money. SquareEnix may be in much better shape now then it was a few years ago, but it's still running lean at the moment. Simultaneously it IS trying to develop a lot of new titles, so they need to bring in money in any way possible until they have some of these larger projects off their plate.

2: To lower expectations. I highly suspect that they were playing a long game to maximize the emotional impact of this announcement.

Normally I would agree with you, but this time... it's just nice to know the game exists!!

Yeah like many others have said, I guess it wasn't in development last year. I wouldn't be surprised if we are looking at a 2017/18 release for the remake.

Still pretty hyped though, had one of my best gaming experiences with FF7.

Maybe they realized once they dug into it, what a clusterfucking train wreck the PC port is, that combined with the reaction from last year. They were like "OK. Let's see if we can get funding from Sony and do it!"

Seriously though, i'd be really damn happy if they just fixed their ports of FF games on Steam. Excluding VII and VIII, they all have serious issues that could be fixed if they WANTED to.

When I read the Siliconera report I didn't really believe it, but I did think it was really strange that even a year after that announcement we had heard nothing about it. I genuinely think it was a legitimate troll from Square and that they knew what they were doing. After that I think almost everyone completely gave up on an actual remake so if so, it was utterly perfect.

Edit: Nevermind, Kagari already confirmed this ages ago heh.
