Why the hell is Sam Rockwell so overlooked?

Not nearly enough dancing GIFs in this thread.

I dragged my friends to an arthouse theater down the street when Moon was still in limited release based on Sam Rockwell being in it. I knew he would kill it.

The truth is that he doesn't star in big budget action movies very often. The most visible actors are those who star in big budget action movies.

I think it's a good thing. He probably is aware that he has an audience and tons of fans.

Too much exposure can be uncomfortable.

I'd be happy in his spot.

He's a worker. Ain't nothing wrong with being a worker. I'd argue he's probably better for this than burning out quick. Dude is building a career and legacy, not a flash and a steady decline.

Really like his work. Dude is real good. He is in this position where he is clearly good enough to have steady work but he is not a blockbuster mainstay. Sounds like the kind of place I'd like to be if I were an actor.

There is only room for a certain amount of not-outragously-handsome people in hollywood. The quota is worse for women. :(

His performance in Moon is indeed incredible. That movie is incredible.

I love Sam Rockwell, but sometimes I feel like the only Sam Rockwell fan who ended up being totally underwhelmed by Moon.

Here's the dilemma with this kind of discussion: He does good work in films that don't blow up, people are like "Why do they overlook him!"

He ends up carrying weight in big movies, same people are gonna be like "why is he wasting his time making this SHIT?"

I think he's "overlooked" because he's busy picking the roles he wants to work. Obviously he knows how to get himself involved in big productions. But he apparently doesn't place a priority on that, as much as he does the quality of the role itself.

I mean it's clearly him but maybe he's hoping to find the next indie-darling like Moon lol. I mean chances are he told his agent what type of movie to pitch him in for. He could likely have a supporting role in plenty of big films if he felt like it.

Is he doing any live dance shows? I would honestly pay money to see him and whatever dance show he could put on

Also, Rockwell NAILED Choke for me. Very fun watch!

great actor, but he doesn't have a star presence i guess...which is fine by me. fell in love with him ever since i watched Lawn Dogs:

He's so good in Seven Psychopaths. I love that movie

That movie is awesome. I love Sam Rockwell and that's probably my favorite movie he's in, I'm not sure why he's so overlooked as well. One of my favorites and I tend to like every move he's featured in.

Excellent actor, but he doesn't have the kind of chiseled good looks you expect from a leading man. It's the same reason PS Hoffman never got a leading role, but to a lesser extent (meaning he's a good looking guy, just not spectacular looking.)

The guy's an absolutely fabulous actor, though.

I don't believe I have seen a movie where he doesn't steal a scene or two. I love the guy and I will usually check out a movie just because he is in it.

I enjoyed The Assaination of Jesse James in large part because of him.

I'm not sure he's interested in the kind of films that would bring him to the next level. Not everyone wants to sign a six movie deal to be Captain Mongoose or something. Though I would definitely pay to see him in that.

It's not like he could play Captain Mongoose anyway considering Fox still has the movie rights to the character :(

He's one of my favorite actors and routinely the best part of whatever movie he's in.

But I generally don't seek out movie's just because he's in them. I'm part of the problem . . .

Rockwell is one of the most talented actors working. Adored his character in the way way back. he was unbelievable along with Casey in Jesse James. Unfortunately some people don't have that "it" factor wether it's looks or some sort of catch that makes them star potential, but I'm sure execs and directors recognize him for his abilities.

PSH did get leading roles eventually, especially after capote.

He's a character actor...they tend to get "ignored" since they're supposed to be chameleons like that. (As in, they're the real actors).

One of the most enjoyable actors working today.

Glad to see someone else mention Lawn Dogs - pretty good movie with a great Rockwell performance.

Sam is good, but he's not exactly lighting the world on fire with his work. It might be the kind of projects that he's drawn to. Either way, I don't think he's hurting for work. He seems just comfortable picking and choosing what he would like to do.

He'll have a much longer career than most leading actors.

Glad to see this thread, been pondering for a while if I just had a man crush on him or if he's just completely underrated - glad to know it's not just me!

He's not really IMO he just picks roles for himself and like many a terrific actor is known to those interested in the medium and by choice is excluded from the overexposure of being a "star".

He gets good reviews, in film circles I'd say it's seen as a positive to see he's in a film and he gets solid media coverage.

In a sense it's just not his thing to be noticed more broadly and casually.

He's doing exactly what he's good at, being a character actor. Brad Pitt will always, essentially, be Brad Pitt, no matter the movie. Sam Rockwell can be anyone. I'd imagine as an actor, being able to take on any role, could be as important as being offered leading roles.

Sam Rockwell is the man.

I was really hyped when he was announced as Zaphod...and then they didn't do the whole two-heads thing. Oh well.

I don't think Sam Rockwell is overlooked at all. He gets steady work, gives good performances pretty much every time, is liked by general audiences.

He's not a superstar but that doesn't mean he's overlooked, either.

Yeah, I don't know if I can call an actor who is not only consistently working, but getting leading roles fairly often overlooked. I mean, he's not a superstar because he isn't a draw, but there's only like one or two dozen "draws" left in Hollywood today.
