Why was Unreal Tournament III a failure?

"There were only like 7 maps compared to the hundreds available for 2k4, less gametypes, less fun. Less support for mods, too."

2K4 absolutely did not have hundreds of maps out of the box. The only reason 2K4 had as many maps as it did at launch is because it contained the maps that were made for 2K3 as well. Completely unrealistic to expect as many maps in a brand new game.

Doesn't matter if it's realistic to expect more maps, the fact is the older game had more maps to play on. "Hundreds" and "7" are both hyperbole, but UT2004 probably did have 100 more maps available to play than UT3 did. Many were 2003 and 99 maps, but that doesn't matter. If UT3 hadn't gone so far off the deep end in terms of art style, they could have redone some of the textures and branded them "classic" maps (to make up for any complaints about inferior appearance) and called it a day.

My biggest problem with UT3 was discussed earlier in the thread but even if everyone said it a thousand times it still bears repeating. The graphics in the game were too goddamn busy. I couldn't differentiate between a temple and another player because they both had so much grittiness to their textures. Things didn't all look the same per se, but the art style they went for made it really difficult in a twitch shooter to tell what's what. I closed UT3 and opened UT2k4 immediately after and could see the difference, like night and day.

Re-releasing a bunch of maps in a half-assed fashion to bump up a number on the back of the box is really all it takes to appease you?

I mostly remember being put off by how visually busy it was. It was a showpiece for Unreal 3 on PC, initially, but it just sort of looked like (even more) overdesigned Gears.

I think a good deal of the loyal 2k4 players felt too alienated by the gears of war crap they busted out with U3.

far from being better than U2k4. i remember getting burned at the stake at the IGN forums for saying that HAlo 2 seemed meh and nothing special when compared to U2k4. still stick to that opinion.

Halo fans were happy to finally be able to play their mediocre console shooter online, should have just let them enjoy their fun.

I guess I'm one of the few who enjoyed UT3. I only played the Warfare mode though. I loved the hover board and the various vehicles.

Epic decided to get involved in the console wars, backed the wrong horse, and fucked over the PC base. Specifically, lets release this game right when Orange Box, COD4, Halo 3, and other juggernauts are launching.

Bad timing releasing it at the time MW and Halo 3 were released.
Bad word of mouth, many PC gamers whined that the game got consolized too.

I enjoyed UT3 - I played the heck out of UT3 PS3 and have the platinum trophy. PS3 version was patched to support custom maps which was great. Lag was variable even with wired to router connection.

Artstyle honestly looked really amazing, but the game was too fast for it...details blurred and become muddy as you are flipping the camera around, making the game unpleasant to look at...really fast games shouldnt have too detailed or dark of an artstyle

I was meh about UT2k3, but loved UT2k4. UT2k4 was a blast on PC. Onslaught matches alone make up some of my best multiplayer gaming memories. UT2k4, Doom 3 and Half Life 2 consumed all of my PC gaming cycles those days.

I can see why you'd say this... And it probably did grab a lot of kids who would have become CS players.

But no, man. CS is basically the other side of the coin to CoD. Its all recoil management, intensive map knowledge, and has some of the best team FPS maps around. CoD never had any of that. It appeals because it is flashlight tag with military trappings.

Certainly CoD isn't as technical as Counter Strike, but you can't tell me that they're really all that dissimilar. CoD is way more like Counter Strike than Unreal Tournament.
