Why were GTA V or TLOU not criticized for their technical issues?

Good games do get criticised but a small piece in a review/video they don't tend to get their own news stories from big outlets or uproar from consumers as the issues are so small and don't distract from the experience.

Games like MCC and Unity on the other hand had so many issues surrounding the baseline performance is that they get their own coverage about the issues and as the websites starting getting hits that will spread to even more scrutiny.

Just check Digital Foundry's game reports if you want a factual story about a certain games pure technical performance issues.
 
Did they have different textures in the PS4 remaster? I've only played the latter, and luckily never witnessed it with framedrops below 30 etc. I always thought it was just a resoltuion and framerate boost for the remaster.

Same texture, just much higher resolution and better filtering allowed the artwork to shine.
 
People's faces weren't flipping inside out on a regular basis in those games. No one cares about the occasional frame rate hiccup.

most annoying issues had to do with very long save game loading times, even surpassing neo geo cd.
But this is a given for the majority of PS3 games
 
The weapon sway plus crappy framerate at times were borderline unplayable in the last of us. Luckily there is an upgrade to fix the former.
 
People's standards vary, and there's a lot more to a product than just how it performs. A lot of folks are willing to overlook technical shortcomings when the game they're playing is so darn good. For me, playing TLoU and GTAV on the PS3 did little to impair my enjoyment of both games, and when all is said and done, they both came out as among my favourite experiences of last gen.
 
I expect a game on aged hardware to have a few more technical flaws than a game on a new system.

By 2013, it's clear that GTA V and TLOU were a bit too ambitious for last gen even though they were both very fun games.

Unity is ambitious, but you don't get to release games with that sort of frame rate one year in.
 
They were generally accepted for pushing the boundaries of the systems they were running on and were amazing games to begin with. Makes sense for their to be slowdown.

This is direct comparison with just running bad and having less or nothing impressive to show for it(AC Unity, big crowds, how amazing)

Right, since they were pushing the system and "best graphics on consoles at the time", nobody cared about the framerate dips.

TLOU still should have been docked a bit since the loading times on version 1.0 of the game were ridiculous before they patched it.

As it was said several times already, there are some factors for that, mainly:

1) Unity had many more technical issues than both these games, so even people who aren't sensitive to framerate dips noticed many technical flaws.

2) The quality of the title definitely impacts your perception of the criticism. I don't even mean it as in "if the game's good, I don't mind", I most definitely do mind, and I did criticize The Last of Us for running like shit and having terrible IQ, but I also gave it high praise for being one of the best games ever created. So you have people who don't care about technical issues giving it unending praise, and people who do care about it also praising it like the second coming, while Unity was, at least in my opinion, a bad game. There's not a lot of positive things to say about it when you're done criticising the technical aspects.

For what it's worth, though, I did defend Unity's PC version, there were some issues, but it ran fine, imo. Most of the complaints were from people who magically expect their PCs to run every game "max settings 1080p/60fps", not realizing this doesn't mean the same thing for every game out there.
 
When I read threads like think I'm thankful that while I'm very sensitive to tearing (I had to quit the original Assassin's Creed on PS3 becuase of the the tearing) I'm quite tolerant of all but very low frame rate drops.

GTA V on PS3 didn't bother me at all. Nor did Until Dawn on PS4.
 
TLOU ran perfectly fine. Great even, by last-gen standards. GTA V did offer a beating when driving, but it was a massive improvement over IV and it remained playable throughout. You could tell it was pushing the systems to their limits and given it's incredible fulfillment of ambition it remains an achievement.
 
GTA V pretty much never runs at 30 FPS on PS3 and 360, it's mostly between 25 and 28, TLOU dips all the time too.

The games were brilliant and I enjoyed them a lot in their original state, but why were the technical issues not really discussed in the media?

The reviews didn't really go into it either iirc, there was just the praise.

AC Unity for example got a way different treatment, the frame rate issues were more noticeable to me, but still.

GTAV and TLoU had minor frame rate drops, they were not broken messes with extended periods of sub ~20 FPS or bugs galore.
 
I'm pretty sure I've seen criticism of the bad frame rate of both games. It's just that those games are so good that you can easily put aside the drops. Overall, for GTA 5, I'd say the shootout sequences are perfectly playable on PS3. It never really bothered me. Driving, on the other hand, does feel pretty sluggish at times, but still playable. For TLOU, I mostly notice frame drops when blowing chunks out of enemies, other parts felt fine for me. Also, both games were pushing the PS3 to its absolute limits. AC Unity was likely not pushing either console to its limits and Ubisoft gimped the PS4 version to be on par with the XB1 version. I think that's the main reason the poor performance was criticized.

To be fair, after that initial load into the game, there are zero load screens. At the end of the day that feels like a reasonable compromise.
 
Tbh I never really noticed anything too bad with TLOU. Maybe it's just the type of game where these things don't bother me that much. 60fps in the remaster is so much better though.

In GTAV I pretty much couldn't stand the framerate when driving and ended up selling the game after completing it.
 
The technical issues prevented me from playing much of GTA V on the PS3. TLOU had issues but some how they didn't bother me.

As for Unity, while I didn't beat it, I didn't find it to be too bad on the Xbox One.
 
By the end of last generation there were a ton of games trying to push way more than the hardware could handle. I actually refused to buy GTA V on last generation hardware because I knew a better version was coming at some point.
 
Because when a game is generally very, very good and almost universally praised for being so, its much easier to deal with technical issues like minor framerate drops...

also, both games are technical marvels for the hardware they were released on...

B) this generation has really raised technical expectations. Framerate and resolution weren't part of the conversation nearly as much in the PS3 / 360 era. Sure you could find those analyses if you looked for them, but it wasn't really a hot topic.
