Wich are the best emulators nowadays?

Can't get this working well. Don't really get how to set-up Retroarch video settings. Just seems to be one set regardless of the emulator you use.

Also...I see there is a "configure" option for games in Launchbox, but how to you enable it? It is greyed out for all games (all emulators).

There's some reall great "Setup RetroArch" tutorials on Youtube.

Also, the Launchbox guys put out setup videos every week for multiple emulators, so check those out.

Do the big ps1/ps2 emulators support actual disks? I've got a huge collection of them, and playing them on the ps3 fat doesn't always look that great. I blame modern HDTV's more then anything.

PPSSPP, Dolphin, Snes9x, and Visual Boy Advance-M never give me any trouble and are extremely easy to use. Most emulators can't compete. Any other emulator I've used I've had some level of trouble with. I especially wish there was a better PS2 emulator out there than PCSX2. So many games I've had trouble with on it.

EDIT: Someone tell me more about mGBA. I've considered replacing my GBA emulator with something better if such exists.

The lunchbox ones I've seen but they never seem to go into emulator or game settings. All about importing roms, which is staightforwaed.

Will see if I can find some better retroarch ones.

Huh. Didn't realize epsxe was in active dev.
I imagine the plugin situation is as much of a nightmare as it ever was.

It came back in 2012 but has been irrelevant as it was superseded long before.

May be wrong but I think they only came back to make paid mobile versions and the pc versions are now incidental, but they are kind of at the zsnes place where people think it's still good well beyond the point it actually is.

Is there even a way to play Chihiro games or other modern arcade games? (I want to try the wangan midnight games, but unfortunatley here where I live we dont have any arcade stores...)

Is winuae still the best amiga emulator? Does retroarch emulate amiga too?

If you want to control everything, yes.
I prefer FS-UAE, it's basically plug and play. It scans your library of Amiga games and downloads all the correct settings for each one. It works best if your games follow the TOSEC naming convention.

I had no success getting retroarch's uae core to work.

I don't think there's a Chihiro emulator yet. These are the modern arcade emulators i know of:

M2Emulator: Sega Model 2
Supermodel: Sega Model 3
Demul: Naomi, Naomi 2, Atomisware, Hikaru, Cave CV1000, a couple of Gaelco boards
Dolphin (triforce build): Triforce

It's also possible to run several Taito Type X games on a Windows machine, without an emulator. Because even in the arcades these games run on Windows, they seem to be compatible in regular Windows PCs as well.

Wow you are already the second not able to make the amiga core to work...
FS-UAE sounds really interesting, winuae has too many options.

There's also Amiga forever. It uses WinUAE too but it's pre-configured and much easier to use. This is what i use on my Windows PC, although it's not free.

Genesis - Gens
PSP - PPSSPP
PS2 - PCSX2
NES - JNES
SNES - Snes9x
WII - Dolphin
Wii U - CEMU
DS - DeSmuME X432R
3DS - Citra

I mean I get that Desmume's ability to play DS games in HD is pretty huge but frankly I'm more impressed by Drastic's legendary performance.
I just tried Dratic's demo on my phones. This is amazing, never expected this kind of performance from my phone.

I really like Desmume but the HD branch is very unoptimized.

The mednafen hw core that's in alpha right now will be the last nail in the epsxe coffin, I hope. That's really the only feature I miss from epsxe.

PuNES for NES
Hatapi for AtariST

On laptop I use:
Makaron for Naomi1 due to being lighter than NullDC. Demul beta has issues with save states but it is the only option for Naomi2.
Same for SSF . Runs fine on Intel 3000, while Yabause requires Nvidia card and double Cpu usage.
Ishiruka Dolphin is light as well, even running some games on Intel 3000.
Shmupmame for least input lag.
Finalburn for using less resources than MAME
Neoraine 1.4 for Neo Geo Cd. Newer versions have some issues
Psx 1.13 for PS emulation. Very fast

I'm not being able to play Retroarch with 2 Xbox360 controllers (one XB360 and one XB1 actually). Something peculiar I should know?

I place the 1st controller in "User 1" and bind its keys. The 2nd in "User 2" and also bind it. But it just can't execute commands in game, neither in the menu.

I'm using the last "Stable" version.

There should be an option that if unchecked won't do anything.Make sure the device type is set to the xbox controllers.

I was always tempted to support it, but honestly games apart i wouldn't know what to do with it.
For the moment i'll use free emulators.

While I do enjoy and am eternally greatful for the likes of nilldc expse and stuff nothing is comparable to how easy dolphin is. Well visual boy advance maybe.

I launched mame once and was like fuuuuuuck no and never touched it again.

Users clinging to old ass emulators baffle me. Especially when huge advancements have been made in accuracy and speed for a lot of them.

I use Higan for GameBoy, NES and SNES.
The SNES portion of it is basically perfect and I refuse to play SNES on any other emulator nowadays.

For GBA emulation I use VBA but I heard about mgba which I really wanna try out some time, as it is apparently a more faithful emulation than VBA.

MAME for everything arcade. I wish the latest stable versions would come with a better UI though.

ePSXe is my go-to PS1 emulator. It just works.
Same for PCSX2 in terms of PS2 emulation.

Dolphin is the best thing for GameCube and Wii emulation.

I recently started using PPSSPP for PSP emulation and it's SO GOOD! I never would've thought how well it runs! It even has the option of unlocking the framerate for games (which may or may not work for certain games) and I love it! I always use it for the Parodius, Gradius and Salamander Collections so I can play them with an arcade stick.

I tried using Retroarch but it's way too complicated to set up. If the UI would be more user-friendly I'd probably use it, but for now it's not on my radar.

For me it's about accessibility. I've used various emulators for years now, so I'm not new to it, but I have difficulty figuring out the new emulators like RetroArch.

Autoconfig might be overriding your binds. Set Autoconfig Enable to off in Input settings, then do all your bindings again and see if it works.

Not sure about PS1, but in the case of PCSX2, YES, it absolutely does. Put your PS2 games in your PC's DVD drive, fire up PCSX2, and you're good to go.

This supposedly gives you somewhat decreased performance, but IMO the feeling of being able to use my real discs is worth it.

As someone who has been using OpenEmu on their laptop for awhile, RetroArch definitely feels like a step back to the bad old days of messing around with endless .cfg files, odd UI choices, etc.

That being said, once I got it up and running, I can see the appeal. Super-flexible, and by following this guide, I'm now able to fire up my gaming PC, launch emulated SNES games in Steam Big Picture mode (with pseudo-CRT effects on a large plasma), all from my couch with an Xbox controller.

There's some setup involved, but it's fun to think about what young me would have thought of FFVI being played on such a setup.

This guy is super late to the party.

There has been SDCARd replacement drives for a while now (from the dev of gdemu)

There are two versions (Phoebe and Rhea) depending on which version of the Saturn you have :

https://gdemu.wordpress.com/operation/phoebe-operation/

Sorry this is slightly off topic, but I don't see anywhere to purchase this. Is it still available? Otherwise looking forward to the new solution, but if this is around soemwhere I'd snatch it up.

BTW Yabause for Sega Saturn, and m64py (Mupen64Plus) for N64. Also soon as Vulkan is working for libretro/retroarch, that will be the way to play N64 games IMO. RetroArch/LibRetro has the "core" of Yabause as Mupen64 as well for emulation. m64py is a front-end just like LibRetro/RetroArch is for Mupen64Plus.

FFXII looks pretty amazing upscaled on pcsx2, I was very surprised.
Still looking forward to the remaster because I'm a sucker.

Preorders open every few months (for GDEmu, Rhea or Phoebe)

It's about 150 euros for each though (but oh so worth it).

Is Higan not as good for NES games? I got it for SNES and just used it for NES games because I already had it. It seems most are recommending other options.

Sorry for the double post and to up the thread again... but I'm needing help configuring Retroarch for 2 players.

I don't know what am I missing, but I can't, for the life of me, connect 2 Xbox controllers and make them both work together! I'm going crazy trying to configure it and almost giving up this emulator! =/

I am able to bind the keys for both controllers (yeah, both recognise the key binding), but only one can navigate at a time during the menu or during the game. I can't make both work together for some strange reason (only the one I select as "User 1" works).

Here goes what have I done to my configuration trying to make it work:

Build: Tried both the last Stable version and the last Nightly version.

Core: Snes9x Next (tried bsnes Accuracy, but it kept the same issue)
Configuration per-core: on

Input > Autoconfig Enable: off

User 1 Device Type: SNES Joypad
User 1 Device Index: Xinput Controller (User 1) (#1)

User 2 Device Type: SNES Joypad
User 2 Device Index: Xinput Controller (User 2) (#1)

I've never gotten around to setting up two player, but it looks like you have everything right with the bindings and the indexes set for the correct users. The only thing I can think of to try would be going into Driver settings, setting the joypad driver to Dinput, restarting RetroArch and try setting the indexes and binding again.

It's so weird! I just tried Snes9x (the emulator) and had similar issue. I was able to configure both controllers, but I can only use one to play, the other doesn't respond in-game (I made to sure to check of both were checked as "enabled"). Tried even keyboard + controller, and just the 1st user works.

So frustrating...

In Dolphin however I'm being able to set 2 controllers with no issues. Yesterday I played 3 players local coop, all using Xbox controllers with no issue. So it's not a problem with the PC and neither the controllers.

Do you have the Xbox specific driver enabled (one of the options in the setup menu)?

At Snes9x, I don't think so. At least I didn't see that option.

Can't find that option though. Is Snes9x 1.53 the last build?

If you're talking about RetroArch, it is configured as "Xinput".

Edit: If that's a relevant information: one of my controllers is an Xbox One controller (the other is an X360 controller).
