But yeah, I think the wife did the right thing here. If he refuses to get help over what is extremely hurtful and negative behavior, and even refuses to see the error of his ways and how his words affect others, I can't blame her for losing respect for him.
He clearly has some underlying issues that he needs to take care of before he considers the possibility of rebuilding his marriage and his family.

I think it's worth noting that this person's behavior is not a sign of mental illness but of disturbed character. Those are two very different things where one is often a treatable disease and the other is deep rooted personality traits. Anti-Social Personality Disorder, for example, is notoriously difficult to treat because the disordered person typically doesn't want to change (the husband has already expressed that sentiment).
The troll in question is perfectly aware that what he's doing is frowned on by society. He just doesn't care. The fact that he's ready to lose his wife and child over this says everything about his personality and does not suggest that he's mentally ill. Sympathizing with his 'plight' just reinforces his behavior.

I used to pick fights on the internet in my younger days, it was great fun riling people up.
I don't do it anymore because arguments make me tired but I still get banned from facebook groups all the time for taking the piss.
Never went out of my way to insult anybody though, so I must conclude that this fellow has gone beyond the lulz and into being a shithead.
Maybe after a week or so he'll see the error of his ways and agree to counselling.

I only read 2 lines of OP.
The wife is dumb. Hubs is dumping all of his toxic waste entirely outside their household. Not even 20 years ago, this would have caused him to drink/beat her/molest the kids/gamble away their money. She should have kept her mouth shut.

If you read the last 3-6 pages you'll uncover a lot of 'gotcha' posts about posters that show their hypocrisy (3 guys in particular, kimawolf, pimpwerx, and the other guy who was banned and part of that nude network).
It's very funny.

This thread certainly took a turn since I last saw it, just catching up now. I'm not surprised that there are GAFers who hand wave cyber bullying. I am also not surprised that nearly everyone who defended the husband focused on the harassment of children part, and sort of glossed over the misogyny and racism.
I think finding out that your SO was a secret racist who enjoys degrading women would be a pretty big deal to most people I know.

Nah the guy is a cunt and needs to learn some deep profound lessons about life. Kick his ass out is my advice to the wife.
I don't think there's anything to read into there. People weren't focusing on him telling kids to kill themselves because they didn't think misogyny or racism were a big deal. It was just that it was the most severe of his actions, and the one that had a very direct consequence (kids have killed themselves over internet bullying).
People have tried to justify making insults over the internet as "they aren't real people" or "it's not actually hurting anyone." It's an asinine defense, but it is difficult to tangibly disprove them. Sure, there have been studies on the impact that has on a person, but the kind of people who would defend this behavior wouldn't care about studies. In the suicide example, there is a direct cause and effect of "Person is bullied->People tell them to kill themselves->they kill themselves", that should be simple for anyone to understand. It's just the easiest point to argue.

As could be expected there were some arguments over the validity of the story, the moral implications of online trolling, and if leaving someone because they were a troll was a reasonable course of action to take.
There were times when it got a little heated (See Blargonaut's post: Exhibit A), but nothing too outrageous. But then the thread took a bit of an unexpected turn when user Mr. Wreckless decided to defend internet trolling and his own foray into it.
A rather "rough-around-the-edges" type, Wreckless was a bit brash in his defense of the subject troll, and everyone thought he was being kind of a douche. That's when JDSN chimed in with his own opinions on Wreckless, bringing up a rather devious admission he had posted in another thread.
Wreckless defended himself, as it was years ago, and it was all irrational fun, in his words. However he didn't seem very repentant of his actions and continued to support internet trolling. A user by the name of Kimawolf took his side. How dare we deride this upstanding gentleman for something as innocent as distributing naked pictures of a woman against her consent and calling her names for the sole purpose of damaging her life? Wreckless was practically a saint... Or so it seemed.

That's when, Wreckless divulged something...
That's right. Once thought to have been no more, it appears that the devious secret society the Nude Trading Network was back. Of course, we all know that the NTN was formed during the mid-17th Century, when English noblemen passed around lude stick figure drawings with arrows pointing to the stick figures and linking them to names of various commoners.
From there, the Network snowballed out of control and grew enormous in size. They met in secret and their drawings became more intricate. Many of the Networks projects were passed off as works of art, with clues hidden by the artists to allude to the NTN's existence.
Of course, by the 1820s the NTN grew tired of drawn and painted nudity. So they paid inventor Nicéphore Niépce to invent the photograph so they could have more accurate naked pictures of people. When he threatened to go public with the Network's doings, they killed him and staged it to look like a stroke. And then they started spreading rumors of an "Illuminati" so people would focus on that organization instead of the real one.
Now, the NTN is still out there. Taking pictures of our weiners. Ogling our nipples. For what intent, we do not know. But they must be stopped.

A user by the name of pimpwerx decided to boast about how he dealt with his problems head-on and how the woman in the OP was a fool for coming to the internet with her personal problems. But those precocious-bebocious-fe-fab-felcious GAF detectives don't care if your hypocrisy goes back nearly a decade, they'll find it....
Meanwhile, Kimawolf was still pro-Wreckless and anti-human decency. That's when Devolution showed up to shut him up.
Kima then indirectly stated that Devolution was an asshole, and then he was banned.
Then some other random guy showed up and suggested that Devolution was something called a "shadow mod". Implying that she may have ties to the NTN? Probably.
Anyway, that guy's banned too. Jeez. A lot of people got banned in this thread (Refer to Blargonaut's post for complete list). Almost makes it all seem like a conspiracy..... A NAKED CONSPIRACY!
