Well, I cancelled sleep, and played with the Forecast thing...
Pretty damn sweet!!

Now this can be used as flame bait! :P

Streamlining the internet services and presenting new wii channels really improves the wii experience. As with every console, wii wasnt ready at launch. Opera, news and weather just make the system really mainstream and life style - like.

I really hope Nintendo has the ability to present 2-3 new channels every 6 months, it will really make the wii worth all its money
I said this a few months ago.
The Wii in the form it is was only started on 2-3yrs ago. Before that Nintendo were looking at a 360 type machine. DS started well and Iwata changed course.
Hence why the channels aren’t ready, games aren’t quite there yet.
I expect within 12mths the full picture of what we can expect from Wii and Nintendo will come to fuitation

Just updated and enabled mine; nice interface and all in all definitely a cool
useless
feature to have. PAL/JP regions before US though? AUHUAHUAHUA. :)

US mods pls don't ban me
:lol

I'm a little disappointed that there are so few "regions" to choose from for your forcast. You can't just put in your zip-code instead you choose a region which may or may not be close to your hometown.. but here's hope they'll fix that later.

You may as well alter the thread title... I live in Michigan and downloaded the Forecast channel about an hour ago...

It's... yep... the weather... although I do like the 5 day outlook and being able to select other cities using the globe.

oh AUSTRALIA haha. Damn lucky non-Americans!

I guess we should check back tomorrow, since we're technically getting it on the 20th anyway.

nah, they probably just released a jpeg saying 'its sunny' for Australia to give them some more time to work on the proper channel

For once?
NoE began kicking some butt a while ago.

That was when NoE startet translating directly from Japanese into the European languages.
Nevertheless, Thomas Ito (German translater) suckz >_<

So did they.

Nice catch. I'm calling it the Nii channel from now on.

I'm really liking it. It's quite detailed information in the areas that are available, like when you're in the Today screen and clicking on the picture of the cloud (or sun) will give you a forecast of the times at which they will be casting. And going up gives you the UV Index for the area.
The ambient music is quite nice and the ability to move around the world at whim is a really nice feature. I also like that rains and thunderstorms have a nice sound to them too. Hopefully there will be more updates with more regions and countries available, and maybe even a more detailed map as in Google earth (though that'll be available when the Internet Channel is up and running anyway). The channel is a pretty nice feature and can be quite useful if you don't wanna bother turning on the computer etc.
Edit: When you grab and twist the wiimote, it actually twists the orientation of the world lol

wii connect 24 and standby options are useless.

i always thought having wc24 set to on meant the system would check for updates when in use, but i guess not because the weather channel wont work unless standby is on as well. :(

It's pretty fun. The globe is a little lacking in detail (and cities), but it's definitely fun when you zoom out and whip it around. Seeing how the globe is essentially an easter egg to the boring list input, I guess that's no problem.

I like it, though. I guess. *yay weather*

Mmm? As far as I can tell it has been getting weather updates while my machine has been in standby, it's just that it only updates every few hours or so. It'd be really neat if it actually downloaded the update while it was in standby, but I can live with just getting a message telling me that it's ready to download.

Which reminds me, I want a message sent to my Wii telling me what has been added to the VC, where is it Nintendo?

I hope the weatherinformation is available for games to access. Wii sports adapting to your local weather? Characters chitchatting about the (real) upcoming weather in Animal crossing?

Would love to see such things.

being able to grab the globe and spin it around is rather oddly............. calming.

this is EXTREMELY well done. I mean not really a replacement for www.weather.com for detailed weather information, but still convenient and informative nonetheless.

edit - and yeah, WiiConnect24 definitely seems to ONLY work when the system is off.. why don't you take care of that there Nintendo.

wouldn't it make more sense for the temperature to appear in the channel preview window on the main menu? i mean, for all the talk of 24 hour online functionality, the thing still has to update every time i click on a channel. *grumble*

This channel is nice, but I hope more locations get added. There are 3 cities listed which are less than 25 miles away from me, but the weather is very different all over the Bay Area.

Yeah and yeah. It is a lot quicker than sitting around waiting for the local forecast. Plus there's not a bazillion flash ads getting in the way.

Thanks for the heads up, I downloaded it and it's pretty sleek.

In earlier Wii footage, didn't the animated channel box for the forcast channel display the current temperature and conditions (partly cloudy/rainy/etc)? I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't currently do that, but here's to hoping that it will in a future update. It'd be more useful if you didn't have to actually enter the channel to get the brief heads up.

But it's a cool little worthwhile channel that although I won't use often, is nice to have and well put together already in it's current state. Nice calming music, 5-day forecast, and zoomable spinnable globe for the win!

But... why did I have to manually download it? I'm on WiiConnect24 and keep my system on standby. The concepts of the service make me think that it should have shown up on it's own, but maybe reports of bricked systems are keeping Nintendo cautious at the moment. Just a little irked that I had to watch that little bar slowly progress for the download for around 5 minutes. Still, a message board letter (the place that tells you your play times, etc) saying "Hey, the channel is ready" would have been the least WiiConnect coulda done.. I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for my GAF addiction, so I'm sure most of the population won't be aware right away. Nintendo hopefully will start streamlining this stuff! I love my Wii and what Nintendo's done so far, I guess I'm just bitching.

I'd also really like WiiConnect to tell me when new stuff is ready for the VC, using the message board. Or really, a simple "Nintendo Power" type channel would be ideal, and seems like they're being foolish not to include. "This week, Alien Crush will be released for TurboGrafx16, as well as such and such... Elebits from Konami was just released, here's a screenshot and brief description. Coming in January is WarioWare, in February is Wii Play." As it stands right now, my Wii seems to connect for updates every 15 - 30 minutes, but I have no idea what for?

Oh and as godawful as many classic games' boxart are, I want that as part of VC... either as part of the animated channel image (Sega Genesis Logo / Sonic The Hedgehog Title Screen / Sonic The Hedgehog boxart) or to be displayed when you're confirming your selection (that currently only shows a static image of the title screen with the system name in generic font). Or even better, BOTH. The online manuals included in games are the bomb and above and beyond the call of duty, but I really liked what I saw in previews of the VC coverage (E3?). That, and button mapping please. And a few Master System games. Maybe Neo Geo if the rights aren't too messed up. And MAME like arcade titles (if I buy Mortal Kombat I, why not the option/inclusion of the real deal?)

And as everyone's just about mentioned, online play. I wanna play Contra NES co-op and Super Mario Kart with dudes around the globe.

Er, sorry, I went off on a rant there. As I said, I love my Wii, but the untapped potential could make it SO MUCH cooler.

I agree with what you're saying, but there was a message waiting for me and others.. with convenient link to upgrade right there when u open the message.

I just checked, Australia is very, very detailed - Heaps of towns with small populations are there. Meanwhile, our Trans-Tasman neighbours (NZ) has a total of 3 cities listed.

I hope they increase the city choices over time. I'm in the WV panhandle wedged between Virginia and Maryland, but there were no WV towns/cities listed for that area so I had to choose a Maryland city about 25 miles away.

Yay! My other half just called me to say my Wii is flashing blue! Will check this out when I get home from work in a few hours.
However, I was wondering - where does Nintendo pull their data from for this weather channel. What service is it based on?

Me too.

With that said....it's 1 degree Fahrenheit at the South Pole! :lol With a high of 7 degrees, woo! Beach Party in Antarctica!

I have no clue about the seasonal trends of Antarctica and its temperatures....

Well you don't have to go all the way into the channel to get the forcast, if you browse the channels like TV channels it'll give you the info. Still not as good as originally shown.

From the way Nintendo has been speaking in their PR it seems like the Connect24 service isn't even up and running yet.

Uh-huh. That's nice. I thought they were only placeholders. So the Newschannel is nearly operable? :>

Sounds like it.

When you go into the Wii's memory area and look at the channels there's no way to delete the weather, news, photo, and mii channels, but you can delete the vc channels you donwload and most likely in the future other kinds of channels.

Once you set your location you can see the current state in the channel preview when you click on it (before loading the actual channel).
And this is a system update, I wouldn't want my system to be bricked by a firmware update while I'm sleeping. Something terrible could happen-gf pulling the plug or whatnot.
I think the channel is quite neat, as you can just hop on and check the weather before or after gaming.

So... is this better than me just hitting F12 on my Mac before I go to work in the mornings?

The update should be downloaded, while you sleep, then you would be asked to install when you turn on the console. That's the way things should be.

Why Nintendo ever insisted on the "game only" approach for the GameCube is so beyond me it's not even funny. It's pretty clear they're great at making these types of applications, even going back to the days of Mario Paint (and the Satelview/Famicom Network in Japan).

mine did do this.

it was kindda weird actually. I somehow left my system on overnight, even though receiver and tv were off. I come out in the morning and see the blue light on. I turn everything on and wii is still on.. weird. no message, no new miis, etc. so I turn it off and just for kicks turn it back on and I now had a message about Forecast channel.

With a rollback feature for added peace of mind.
