Wii hits 6m in UK; fastest selling console to date

yeah yeah yeah, this thread is so far pretty predictable. its pretty funny that nintendo babbies are laughing, cause they're either laughing or crying: they're always laughing about about sales and everyone knows that wii owners are only actually happy in NPD threads. but they're always crying about having no games. indeed, if there was a game called "NPD" nintendo fans would actually have something to play about be happy about.

the fact of the matter is that gaming is dead due to nintendo. nintendo fans can say "but but but wii remote is the next tv remote" but as shigsy said a week or two ago, nintendo is now full of suits instead of manchilds in short-shorts pretending to be elves and disabled firefighters. in terms of creativity they're bankrupt. i predict on the new nintendo console nintendo will make games titled "adventure game", "action game" and "sad ending game". we all know sony and microDOLLARsoft are going to copy nintendo so console gaming basically ded.

indeed so enjoy your sales nintendo fans, you guys will laugh but i will be playing games on my pc

So what does this tells us about UK?

Lots of comedians say they have bad teeth.

Outside of the "targeted humor" in your post, what does playing games on your PC have to do with the Wii?

We UKers sure love our shitty non-games.

That said, we have a Wii in our household. My mother bought it.

It tells us that here in the UK people like Ant and Dec and cheap entertainment or rather perceived cheap entertainment.
360's cheaper. Has been for a long time.

It means that Brittons are responding to an effort to make video games less elitist and more mainstream, plus some good marketing.

Wait... so they are probably going to be a million down from last year?

Yeah they are going to be down YOY like elsewhere, of course someone should call up Bloomberg so they can write another article for their "investors" about how the Wii broke the record fastest but since its down its a major flop [/sarcasm]

Gfk-ChartTrack has announced that the Wii has hit the 6m milestone in the UK:

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/36739/Wii-hits-six-million-in-the-UK

Breakdown on growth:

2006: 185,000
2007: 1.81 million
2008: 2.73 million
2009 (to week 48): 1.31 million

Next stop: PS2's 10m milestone
and we know that the 360 is outselling the Wii 2:1
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=366940
So the 360 has probably sold close to 2.6 million this year so far, which means that this year it will beat the Wii's best ever year! :D

The Wii ran over my puppy and laughed while doing it :(

But seriously, what a turnabout for Nintendo in the UK.

Reading this thread reminds me of how when fat people tell fat jokes to get a laugh and temper any jokes someone else might crack on them but everyone knows they are crying on the inside.

And I think "bitter tears" has found itself beside such classics as "ps3 has no games," and "gamecube is kiddie."

Thats why I used the word perceived, most of my non-gaming friends still think the Wii is the cheapest home gaming system.

Um... yesterday you mentioned in a thread that you weren't sure if you were having a "whoosh" moment.

You're having one right now.

There are more Wiis available than any near-launch home console ever?

I note that it has sold significantly more in UK than GCN did in all of Europe, and shouldn't take long to catch up to N64.

That it contains more regular, easy-going people who enjoy fun with friends than elitist, socially inept loners?

lol id rather go to the pub with my friends not make a complete idiot of myself waving a bit of cheap plastic about , could be worse right enough , singstar .

So approximately 10% of the population owns their own Wii. Assuming there are ~3 people per household, that's one Wii in every three households. Crazy.

UK: One per 10.2 people
USA: One per 11.6 people
Japan: One per 14.7 people

I know. I'm also way too cool to play Wii.

This is ridiculous. This just goes to show that quality isn't everything in the business world.

This generation Nintendo decided not to join SONY and Microsoft in pushing technology to revolutionize gaming. Instead they decided to go the easy and lazy way by putting their focus on targeting at the uneducated group of people in society who are clueless when it comes to both technology and quality.

This new market doesn't appreciate state of the quality artistic games like Batman: Arkham Asylum and Gears of War. They put their focus more so on trendy games with a "lite" flavor that appeal to their mundane lives. Games like Wii Sports and EA Active signify a problem with gaming.

It was with this generation that gaming was finally starting to reach and even surpass cinema in terms of making an interactive and atmospheric experience. Games like Bioshock sent shivers down my spine as I felt like I was trapped in an aquatic hell hole, Uncharted made me feel as if I was in an Indiana Jones film (this was the REAL Indiana Jones 4), and because of Call of Duty 4 I now know what it's like to be in an actual warzone. Gaming was finally moving on to being a true immersive, atmospheric, and artistic experience. Video games have finally truly moved on from being "toys" to being a full fledged artistic medium.

The Wii however is destroying that. It's moving games from being artistic and entertaining to just merely being fun. This is bad for us gamers, we don't want games like Wii Fit Plus getting attention, but games like Uncharted 2 and Brutal Legend. I know I may sound extreme with this, but if use gamers don't stand up for whats with right we may lose quality games forever.

Hmm. That is getting pretty dense. What sort of totals did PS1/PS2 hit over there?

For a second there I thought this was Firestorm, and I was like 'wat', phew lol. I know you are not dense to realize this, but this whole post is ridiculous. I thought GAF has moved on from this mindset already
or was this supposed to be sarcasm?

Seriously though where are all the Wii RPGs?
It seems to be selling due to just a handful of different software (Wii sports, Mario kart etc) and has dire offerings in a lot of big genres

There's about 26m households in the UK, so it is closer to one Wii in every four households. 23%.

You forgot all the single people households, we're not all married with kids.
