Wii kills woman in Sacramento (literally)

What's with these thread titles?

First, according to the topic title, "Nintendo Killed a 6 Year Old" (when what it really was is that he tried plugging in his GB and got electrocuted because he was wet)

And now...the Wii has "literally" killed a woman.

Oye.

Still, that's really sad...albeit stupid. A college around here had a kid die at a water drinking initation. His kidneys collapsed I believe.

I really wish people at radio stations weren't so ****ing stupid. I don't blame the woman at all - its the people who ran the contest that should've known the risks involved.

Hopefully someone will post the news when the inevitable wrongful death lawsuit is filed.

Man, I wish the woman didn't die so I could enjoy this thread more :(

A young mom trying to win a Wii for her children. Wow... so incredibly sad. What a way to die.

The contest doesn't seem that crazy though really. I knew that it was possible to die from too much of anything, including water, but I didn't know it could be done so easily. Makes me wonder what other things I shouldn't be taking so lightly :P

Unfortunately, it's not exactly general knowledge that excess water retention can cause critical electrolyte imbalances which in turn can kill.

... but the radio station regardless of their waiver should be held absolutely liable for it.

Hey kids, your mom died trying to get you guys a wii; millions of dollars won't replace your mom, but it'll definetly serve as some kinda compensation and a strong warning to other radio stations to do be less stupid about the activities they get the public involved with.

Also, she may have been particularly susceptible to water intoxication -genetics, body weight, other physical attributes...

What if the radio station were aware of the risks, an d made sure they were no where near the limits, made her aware of the limits and risks, but she was just unfortunate?

The radio station should have the responsibility of informing the contestants as to what the potential risks are. Hopefully they get sued out of existance.

Guess what guys? I LIVE in Rancho Cordova!

Rancho FTL. I'm not surprised. I need to get out of Sacramento and move back to the Bay.

Bummer, I liked 107.9 too.

Why did you say it like that? Now I'm going to be depressed for the night.

I hope the people responsible for this "contest" will be held responsible for unvoluntary manslaughter...what a terrible idea.

I learned a few weeks ago that it only takes about two liters of water to kill you if you drink it all before your kidneys can process it.
It all depends on how much you drink regularly, the more you drink the more water is released from your body. The worst case scenario would be you drinking only little throughout the days and then a lot on a single ocassion. 2 litres could be enough in that case.

Also depends on other factors, such as sweating it out

This same thing killed my "battle buddy" while I was in Basic Training in 2001. Guy was steadily drinking a shit-load of water, he went down so the medics on scene assuming he went down because of heat-stroke popped him with two large bore IVs. Just kept pumping the fluid into 'im.

Well, I'd hope the radio station were aware of the problems and told the contestants that. Either way, both parties are pretty dumb. So long radio station though.

I remember reading a story a couple years ago where a College frat house required new housemates to drink excess amounts of water before becoming apart of the 'family'. The kid died and the College students were put up for manslaughter.

Misleading thread title ftl.

That's pretty sad. You shouldn't risk your life for a video game system.

It's not just any system, it's a nintendo wii.

So awesome.

Isn't this the same radio station that The Real World Seattle kids ran?

In anycase, I had no idea you could die from water intoxication. If I was out there and heard about this, I would have participated since over the years I've become adept at holding my wee because of a severe case of bladder shyness. I can't go in public cause if I hear noise, everything gets all stopped up down there. So I mostly only go to the bathroom at home or a friend's house, or work if I'm sure nobody's in there. If necessary I can hold my wee all day; feels good to get home after that tho. :)

I think the drinking water every 15 minutes thing tho is a pretty excessive part of the contest if you are gonna run something like this. Your body isn't meant to process so much so quickly so I could see where that is where the trouble lead.

The article mentions that guy Yerba bowed out after 90 minutes and then contestants were given even larger bottles of water - exactly how long did the contest go on?

For those who don't know, water intoxication is literally the intake of too much water. If you have too much water in your system it will dilute your blood and cause your brain to swell and nervous system to break down.

This is the second misleading title in the last two weeks that blames the Wii for someone's death. Please stop it or someone should be swinging ban-sticks.

she should have done research before she joined a contest

just cause tere is a contest doesnt mean its going to be safe

Hindsight is always 20/20. And normally companies don't put you in a contest that could pose a danger to your livelihood without telling you.

WTF? How can you die due to a water intoxication? How can water intoxicate (does that word even exist? :D ) a person? I mean, it's ... water.

Wow. I would of thought that she would of wet herself before she died from holding it in.... Wow, that is a dedicated mother, but still she kind of died in vain.

Considering she died at home after the contest ended, she likely did go at some point but the damage was already done.

Poor woman. She died trying to get a Wii for her children. This is very sad.

Well, I must accept it, there's one woman less to look for.

This story made the BBC world-wide radio news. They didn't mention the Wii, just the wee.

That radio station is so screwed, I don't think that little signed release will protect them.

Wikepedia has a good entry on water intoxication. Basically, you are diluting your bodily fluid so much that your body fails to work properly.

This is a very sad story, but your title needs to be changed. It's more like a lack of Wii and wee caused this, not the Wii itself.
