Wii owners - what did you want from third parties?

A few "big" games would be nice. Add in some more "niche" or "small/medium" budget titles like those in '09 and I'll be fine. Basically the '09 line-up only with like 2 extra "big" games.

Pay no attention to Scrubking. The Wii's resident chicken little. Think PoliGAF's Cheebs, but 10 times worse. Bitching and moaning about third parties in every fucking Wii thread.

I don't even know what to say to this bullshit.

that honor goes to No More Heroes as my GotF. plus, that game was designed by Speilburg. of course it's going to be good. this man understands entertainment. EA by and large has delivered poor branding and has not given any of the properties you listed other than Boom Blox. they depend on Harry Potter for their Wii sales, FUCKING HARRY POTTER. they're also in the red for last quarter. because of the way they've been treating the Wii platform, they're leaving money on the table.

i just want publishers to put an A team on a large scope Wii project (as in a "core" game), market it well (as in TV ads), and see what happens. i bet you dollars to donuts that if it's a good game, it will sell, and even if it isn't it'll at least break even. the Wii isn't a pushover console. it's audience will buy good games, and quite simply, those haven't been coming out enough. these publishers have enough to throw money away on HD flops, the least they could do is to take a shot at the Wii upstream market.

Like I was saying before: hype junkies. They go mad for hype, they LOVE it. Thing is, if they don't get their monthly hit, they get a bit... cranky. Not to mention forgetful.

No Wii owner has any right to complain about a lack of games on the Wii with its back-catalogue growing the way it is. Unless you don't have a job or go to school or something, you shouldn't have had time to play all these games. If you're complaining, it's because you're a hype junkie.

Remember kids, games aren't like prawns. They'll still be good even if you don't play them day one.

Weird, dumb shit you wouldn't find on other consoles because they wouldn't be financially smart. Examples of Wii games that follow this already and turned out good: Castlevania Judgement, probably Sonic and the Black Knight.

I'd totally take a Ryu Ga Gotoku fighting game for the Wii.

This list actually does look fairly good, with a few decent games from most of the major publishers.

What that list is missing, however, are the AAA developers. No GTA-team Rockstar, no Infinity Ward, no Bungie, no Epic, no Bioware, no Bethesda, no Valve, no Blizzard, no Insomniac, no Irrational Games, no Kojima, no SquareEnix FF or DQ, no Capcom Resident Evil team.

Am I missing any major third party teams? The ones that make you immediately think, "One of the most prominent development houses in the industry." Perhaps I'm missing a team that should be glaringly obvious, but that's likely the top 15 teams right there. I might put a couple of new ones up for contention, but it's important to note that all of the development houses I've just listed were well known before this generation began, and have by and large continued their excellent pedigrees.

And that is the problem, I think. It's nearly impossible for Nintendo to shift the focus of the hardcore without moving a substantial portion of those dev houses I just mentioned. A smattering of pretty good games like Elebits or quite good but quirky titles like No More Heroes simply will not cut it. The biggest development houses are all still almost exclusively on the PS3/360/PC, and where they go, the lion's share of the hardcore will follow.

Edit: Did I forget any major third party development houses? If I did, let me know. It's a rough list, but I did think about it for a bit to make sure I was grabbing all of them. Remember, this is only supposed to be a list of developers who were widely renowned before this generation even began, to show that the third party development teams with the most prestigious pedigrees have all focused exclusively on the PC/PS3/360.

Jumping Flash says "fuck you."

Oh right.

I missed out on a lot of console gaming. For 8 years, the Atari 7800 was the only console I had (got it in 1989).

I think I've only seen a few screens of Jumping Flash. So it didn't spring to mind.

Fuck no. Publisher of the year.

Dead Space - Haven't played it, but tons of people love it.
Mirror's Edge - The first first-person platformer from the start (R&C:GC had a first-person mode, but you had to unlock it), and the GotY
Burnout Paradise - The year's best racing game, hands down, with FREE DLC THAT'S ACTUALLY COOL LIKE BIKES HOLY SHIT
Boom Blox - I didn't like it, but I THOUGHT WII FANS THOUGHT THIS WAS THE BEST THIRD PARTY GAME THIS YEAR OR SOMETHING. JESUS.
Boom Blox was the second most popular game at PAX's freeplay, beaten only by Soul Calibur IV. Nothing else even came close. That's pretty impressive for a gaming convention aimed at the hardest of the hardcore.

I'd like to emphasize again, from my post above, that simply moneyhatting one of the above won't cut it. Getting a token game from Kojima or Valve, for example, would be nice, but even if it's excellent, you'd then have 1 game from the "top 15 development houses," while the PS3/360/PC would have no less than 14 already released this generation, with at least 5-10 more titles in the next year or so.

And where these companies go, others follow -- both smaller dev houses, who want to one day be the next Bungie or the next Blizzard, and the legions of fans in their retinue. I will repeat this one more time: if one really wanted to see a seismic shift in the approach of development houses, you'd need to see several of these major development houses move significantly towards the Wii. As in, at least 3-4 of these companies begin providing substantial support.

Fixed.

Theres loads of stuff coming in 09 from 3rd parties and this gen is NOT over yet. 3 more years at least for Wii.

lucasarts to put their point and click adventure catalog on wiiware with some enhanced not so pixelated graphics and even full voiceover if they could do it right

All I ask for is an equally funded developement team for Wii compared to their 360/PS3 versions. It seems like games that are multiplatform they used a small budget to make the game while using a big budget for PS3/360 versions. If they just gave the Wii version an equal opportunity there could be lots of good 3rd party games for Wii.

Your wish is granted. :)

Honestly, I thought that we'd see a influx of Pikmin-strategy, music, and point-and-click adventure games (maybe more action-oriented, since the DS has the rest locked up), and that all of the perceived "B-tier" titles (your Suikodens, your Grasshopper Manufacture games) would migrate there.

What were my adjusted expectations after year 1? It looks a lot like the 1st half of 2009. I'm actually excited about a Nintendo console again!

What do I want? The same thing everyone should want. Great games.

Most of them are going on 360 and PS3, and that's fine. A lot of those games - Mirror's Edge, GTAIV, Dead Space, RE5, just to mention a few - benefit massively from being on much more powerful hardware.

However, at the same time the Wii shouldn't be ignored, particularly given its rapidly growing userbase. The method of input, especially with the arrival of MotionPlus in 2009, should demand real creativity and effort. The console deserves great, exclusive games that benefit from being on Wii - unique, creative efforts that are just as thorough and enjoyable as what you see on the competing consoles. The kind of games that would actually be inferior on the 360 or PS3. Wii might be underpowered, but 3rd parties fail to see that there's a lot that the console can offer.

Right now the Wii is being massively ignored by the majority of key 3rd parties. Just look at this holiday for instance - many of the AAA games that you're playing right now were developed by 3rd parties who have chucked the Wii to the side. Thankfully 2009 seems to be the start of something very positive indeed - MadWorld, The Conduit, Little King's Story and House of the Dead: Overkill, just to mention a few, all look very promising.

I want to see this trend continue to improve. Then again, I don't think it could get any worse.

Basically what i want are games that doesn't look like an insult...

example: Dewey, opoona, Horse games from a certain company

Games that don't look like an after thought and for the love of God keep 2nd and 3rd tier teams away from making any wii games

Besides those three Japanese devs, the rest are Western devs. We know Capcom is treating the Wii with some respect, while the HD focused SE and Konami don't give a crap. At this point I don't see Western devs giving the Wii their AAA support for remainder of this generation, if SE and Konami is still ignoring it. I really hope I'm wrong though

sadly zelda will likely not be worth the wait. nintendo seems content in recycling that game over and over. kinda like mario kart or animal crossing.

Sonic and the Secret Rings (was better than Sonic the Hedgehog 360 / PS3)

as bad as next gen sonic is, secret rings is infinitely worse, man, that game is abysmal

Former Wii owner here.

I wanted the new gameplay experiences I was promised back when the Wii was announced. I wanted a single game that's both built around a game mechanic that's impossible to do on 360/PS3 and remains fun/interesting for more than 20 minutes. I thought the Wii was supposed to be the console for innovation, and the other guys were all about graphics. Yet all I've seen from the Wii are collections of concepts and waggle-fied controls, while the "graphics whores" make games like Portal, Mirror's Edge, etc.

I've got nothing against the good traditional games on the Wii that a lot of people seem to be asking for, but at some point you have to ask if that's really why you bought the thing in the first place.

More arcade-like games. And light gun games. More experimental stuff too, although we all know how the market perceives those.

I don't really want the same type of games I can get anywhere else all the time, that's not why I bought the console.

I'm very content with the console, and the majority of my favorite games are 3rd party ones.

If there's anything I want, it's more polish. Oh, and quality JRPGs. That's it really.

I don't expect large-scale, technically ambitious titles to land on the Wii, so why bitch about that? If you want Gears, Fallout or something along those lines, shell out the cash for one of the other two platforms.

(that reminds me, I'm still waiting for my UPS shipping label Microsoft!)

Jeez why can't more people call this bunk argument for what it is.

We don't want technically ambitious teams on technically ambitious titles. We want technically competent teams making things that actually have had their place on nintendo systems for generations. When they can stop being stuck in the n64-ps2 level of design with a system that is more capable than either then the griping can stop about them half assing it. Then again I don't blame the devs specifically I blame their inept publishers.

I wanted some AAA titles

... but havn´t gotten one since launch

I have given up hope for third parties on Wii (Nintendo stuff is still good except for non-games)

I crave more and better Graphical Roguelikes, Rail Slashers, invention of RailBashers/Brawlers, Light gun games chock full of replay value like Ghost Squad...

I'd actually buy Final Fantasy 1 again if they reimagined the game in an enhanced Dragon Quest Swords style.

A decent effort is the main thing.

Marvelous is kicking ass. Capcom/Namco/Sega seem to be giving proper support now, especially if some of their Japanese games come over.

EA's had their moments, as did Ubisoft in the beginning, but they've also put out some huge crap.

I'd like to see Rockstar come out with an original Wii game, and Square-Enix/Konami get in gear already.

I don't think it's expecting too much to have Take 2/S-E/Konami/Ubisoft release an original AA/AAA core game for the console about every 18 months to 2 years.

I've wanted a goddamned FPS with good split-screen since launch. Quantom of Solace is the first one since RED STEEL, something not even World at War and (I hear) The Conduit can boast. How can these guys be making huge-budget blockbuster FPSs for the "Ultimate Party Console" and not include OFFLINE MULTIPLAYER! Online and LAN modes are no substitute for telling a friend sitting on the couch next to you to go fuck himself for grenading you in the face.

I'm pretty happy at the moment. I know alot of you want games from the latest "it" developers but I dont really care about that shit. If you put effort into your game there's a chance I'll play it and pimp it out to other people as well.

In general I'd like more games using the Wii Wheel and some Action/RPG type games.

games with construction sets and level sharing: yeah - friend codes make the sharing part more awkward than it should be, but the remote is fantastic for level building/customization controls. something like a multiplayer co-op guantlet-style game that had rpg elements and a level editor would be really nice.

god/management games: is sim city the only one so far? one-handed control using the pointer and a slower strategic pace.

turn-based tactical rpgs that uses the pointer. heck - any turn-based rpg design that can be put together to use just the remote for controls.

proper fleshed-out console "lightgun" games with multiplayer. good shooting, but also strategic weapon selection, ammo management, multiple paths, etc... get some more high-level choices that matter in the game compared to an arcade port (which are also awesome, of course).

RPGs and niche hardcore titles (like 2D action games). The lack of RPGs on the thing is especially ridiculous at this point, considering how successful the system is in Japan.

Pointer based games.

Activision - a first person Spider-man game using the pointer to aim webs, web yank, spin webs, throw webs. On-rails would be fine if an FPS is too tricky.

Konami - a 2D Castlvania...that uses the nunchuk for movement, a button press for the whip....combined with new weapons and magic controlled by the pointer. Castlevania meets Lost Winds.

LucasArts - a new 2D Star Wars platformer...with force powers controlled "Lost Winds" style.

A port of Star Wars Trilogy arcade (talk to Sega you fools)

and the obvious motion+ movie style lightsaber game (Wii is perfectly capable of displaying a 1 on 1 lightsaber game where the characters look like their movie counterparts as opposed to deformed cartoons)

..oh and use the pointer for force moves when possible.

Sega - They're doing pretty good...but cheap ports of Brave Fighters, Virtua Cop and all their other arcade lightgun games would be nice...and a port of Star wars Trilogy arcade (talk to LucasArts you fools)

Namco - You make lightgun games...make some for wii rather than limiting your userbase to those who have a guncon.

...and for those who are making lightgun style games...why limit yourself to just aim and shoot?...why not include projectiles you aim and throw ala boomblox, pinpoint lasers to carve limbs off of enemies or cut through walls..or pointer controlled force powers/harpoon attacks/webyanks/water cannons etc.

..oh..and Capcom..you really could have made RE4.5 for Wii..couldn't you?

I wanted publishers to take advantage of the freaking pointer.

I wanted RTS and Strategy games. I wanted icon-based menus like on PC.

Right now that's what is clearly lacking on the console.

I want the following:

1- Some AAA effort. This is the most sold console on this generation, and by a wide margin. Why the hell you are not giving it your most talented teams or even a decent budget?

2- Some proper use of the wiimote. Nintendo already gave tons of guidelines and mechanic controls with the wiimote that can be expanded into full flegded games or adapted to create another ones (wiisports, wiiplay, every single level of mario galaxy, Metroid prime etc). Why the freaking hell you dont use it? If you cannot come up with ideas of your own at least try to steal a good one, Jesus.

3- Some game that uses the pointer properly. It is the best wiimote utility by far. Nintendo have created a "console mouse", so why the hell we havent seen the type of games that have worked better with that control? (strategy games, adventure games, etc).

4- Stop assuming that the Wii audience is younger than the media. It is pretty much the opposite. Casual, social gaming a la guitar hero (which has prooven to be a huge sucess in the Wii) and kid games are two very different things. Also remember that to dress a hardcore game as a casual one tends to end up in huge disaster (see also: Zack and Wiki, Viva Piñata).

Only Grasshopper, Marvellous interactive, Sega and (to some extent) Capcom are getting it. The rest of the third parties are completely and utterly clueless about WTF they should do in order to make Wii good, sucessful games.

What I wanted is still what I want today; honest effort on the third parties side to bring new experiences for games, through control, to the table.

Most major third parties have shown in the past two years that they're completely incompetent in their abilities to change along with the times. If they can't get motion control right, what hope do they have.

It'll be weird to see the giants of my day reduced to critical levels but it will also be fun to watch new studios that do have the imagination and talent rise from nothing into tomorrows super powers.

As far as the Wii library, I snicker everytime people slant it cause I myself have way too much stuff to play anyway. Though I would kill for more point and click type games, i.e. civilization, god games (a dungeon keeper? Please??), and the like. At least use the pointer guys! That shit is easy.

Full scale point and click adventure games. Vampyre Story should've been on the system yesterday. Same with a Lucas Arts collection.

Deeper, more realistic sports games. EA is going a good job of this, especially with Tiger Woods. I'd like to see a Fight Night game with similarly high end fundamentals though. A baseball game could be amazing but I don't expect 2K to do it any time soon, be nice if Nintendo and EA worked something out to put the MVP team together and publish it as a 1st party title.

Open ended isometric RPGs a la Fallout and Arcanum would work well with the wii remote pointing capabilities. Never happen though.

More games like Mad World that fuse traditional analog controls (movement) with motion controls (attacks).

More light gun games. Seems like the perfect console for a silent scope game, as the peripheral controller could be made for far less than any other system.

Lot of things I'd like to see but I doubt many at all will get realized. I like the '09 lineup and current library so no big though.
