Wii Sports Resort

My brother wrote off motion+ after playing my copy today. He said it did not follow your movements at all.

After watching him play, I noticed all he did during swordfighting was waggle crazily and expect it to work. He didn't make any big slicing motions like you generally would with a sword. He was treating it like a knife, like the Wiimote itself was the weapon instead of the hilt of a bigger weapon.

I wonder if this is what most people who think it's really inaccurate are doing.
Most probably.

It's hilarious when someone complains that their ruthless waggling is not registering. The game is trying to approximate reality, and mimicking an epileptic attack with your hand as a way of "sword fighting" is not reasonably accurate. Yet despite this, the game does a good job of approximating a crazy waggle, but of course, it ends up being as effective as button mashing in a fighting game.

I have to say, I kept playing the showdown mode, and the harder it gets, the more absurdly awesome it becomes. It became even more shockingly immersive.

Also, what the fuck at some competitors using the sole of a shoe as a racket in Table Tennis. That came out of nowhere. :lol

M+ has defintely taken this immersion to a new level, I am enjoying every mini game in WSR.

I am a little disappointed that M+ can become "desynched" when doing things like showdown, i hope this doesn't become a problem for sword-fighting heavy games.

They'd just need to add an animation when you press the dpad to recalibrate: Link gripping its sword for instance. It would then feel natural and completely integrated into the game.

So the next game that comes with M+ is Red Steel 2? Guess I will have to wait for that.... sad for the long wait.. I don't want to buy the M+ alone.

NHL2K 10 is expected in september IIRC.
It will use the pointer passing system of PES and the Motion+ to shoot or feint.
Could be awseome if implemented correctly.

There're two kind of gamers for motion controls.

1- The ones playing make believe, doing all the movements and pretending they're there.
2- The ones doing small and fast movements, body rigid, sometimes sat down.

The first group uses to have a blast and get the game pretty fast. The second groups gets bored pretty fast and complains about how underwelming motion controls are.

Based on what i've played at E3... just don't expect Red Steel 2 to have the same astonishing controls of Resort.

My housemate is a waggle fiend. In pretty much any competitive Wii game we've played his one and only goal is to find an exploitable, cheap waggle technique that will become near impossible to defeat. You can imagine the very first thing he did in sword-fighting was waggle his way to a defeat.

He has, however, managed to find an 'exploit' in his bowling strategy. It involves him lining up a particular shot and bowling as slow as possible. The little movement by the remote means there's hardly any spin, so it goes dead straight, and despite going cripplingly slow ends up getting a strike 70% of the time.

HOLY CRAP you can play 11-points Table Tennis holding "2" at the beginning?! :D
Just tried it, and it actually works...

Which begs the question: Why the fuck wouldn't they document this? I've looked in the manual, nothing. Looked on screen, nothing. When you start the game, it still says you're playing up to 6 points. Seriously, I don't get Nintendo anymore.

Does this trick work elsewhere? Can I turn swordfighting from best of 3 to best of 5 or something?

I'm going to try it some more. I was busy telling people last night that you can play 3-on-3 basketball games at night or turn off the targeting circle on archery. Then I tried it on table tennis...

Also, I'm sure the 11-point games make it faster. It certainly seemed quicker when I was playing Lucia, and my smashes seemed to have more effect. I wonder if it's essentially considered an 'expert' mode or something.

And no, it's not in the manual. But don't you remember the days when games had secrets that were actually, y'know, secret? I think it's a brilliant touch. I wish more games had this sort of thing.

Fuck that bitch! I've been stuck on her for 2 days now!

And has anyone figured out what the 12 digit Wii / Friend code is for yet?

Isn't that the Mii number? To download it from the Wii contest channel if you like it?

2 on skydiving makes it like the game intro - no photos, and only a few hands to hold. You get the music and the zoom onto the game logo on your parachute still.

Finally beat her. You need a certain amount of luck. She hit the net with one shot, and this time I remembered to leave it :lol and missed a fairly routine forehand on another point. Still had to come back from 4-2 down to win 7-5, but the feeling of euphoria was like nothing else.

I don't think I've ever used so many expletives as in the past couple of days. My neighbours must think I suffer with Tourettes.

Well, usually I'd agree with you on that, but, in my opinion, an option to change the length of a game shouldn't be hidden. It's such a standard feature. Turning off the targeting circle in archery is a different matter though -- that being hidden, I can live with.

Aw, shit thanks! All this time I've only been downloading Miis that feature on the contest channel. I didn't know there were random cool Miis under the POST YOUR OWN page. :/

My friend was exactly the same way. In particular with golf, he would just flick his wrist instead of doing a golf-like swing. He also spent most of his time sitting down.

The 2-button alteration on Island Flyover is a bit pointless - if you're going to take out the challenges then why not remove the time limit, too? Still, some people might like the lack of HUD or anything to worry about.

On canoeing you get a challenge where the object is simply to go as far as you can. There are no obstacles and no markers - just a long course (I think it ends at about 300m, but I've only got to 289m so far). The ducks then add as a kind of ghost for your previous best. If you're ahead of them then you know you're doing well. :D

Just a little tip for next time- If your story involves your mom not letting you do something, it's probably best to keep it to yourself.

If you are going to college (presumably age 18) you are far too old to allow your mother to tell you what you can and can't play. I would be embarassed to tell my friends that story in real life.
Being a legal adult doesn't prevent parents you're still dependent on from having some level of control; at least if you want to maintain that dependence. Sure, maybe he could radically change his future plans and sever his ties to his parents so he could play Wii Sports Resort a bit early--that would sure impress us cool people.

I really wonder, if there is still more stuff hidden in the program code, like Tennis with WM+.
If there are some hidden features like all the -2- stuff, who can say, that we won't find more minigames hidden and only accesable with Orcarina.

I should start my USB gecko next time and search for speacial features. Would be also great to deactivate the time limit while sightseeing. We'll see...

Btw: Is it jsut me or does the Wu-Hu Island city has some similarity with the Zelda OoT beta Hyrule marketplace?

Ehmm, for me it's the opposite... it's difficult NOT to spin the ball.
I just always end up moving my wrist at the end of my throws.
So well, try this (if you haven't): you should hold the remote as shown by the tutorial with the + (D-Pad) facing your chest, right? During the back swing just hold it that way, then when in the up swing you're past your legs (at least) then you'll start moving your wrist so that the wiimote ends up sideways left (+ facing your left arm) or right (B button facing your left arm) depending on the spin you wanna give to the ball.

P.S. edit:
My example goes by the assumption that you're right handed, so just mirror it :P

I will try again when I get home. In Wii Sports 1 I consistently bowled in the 200s, with a high of 290. In WSR, I can barely break 100 because I have not gotten the ball to spin. I am almost certain I am bowling like how you describe.

I have another question, though. Whenever I pause the game and check on the Wii Motion Plus, I see that it never points the direction I am holding it. Sometimes it just drifts completely around in a circle with me pointing it straight at my TV. Could this be a calibration issue?

Finally, was looking for this :D

Picked this up yesterday and it's fuck-incredible.

Super tip for people new to Swordplay (that's already probably been mentioned):

When attacking, use the direction of your opponents sword as a slash direction indicator. As in if he's holding his sword straight up and down, attack straight up and down. If he's holding his sword horizontally, attack horizontally. Diagonally? Attack in that same diagonal.

When defending, it's just the opposite. If your opponent has their sword straight up and down, block horizontally, etc.

Or put more simply:

Attack direction is parallel to your opponents sword position.
Defense position is perpendicular to your opponents sword position.

it's really not difficult to throw it dead straight now, even with power, but it only guarantees you a score around 180-200... really risk leaving yourself 5/7 or 5/10 splits when throwing straight.

Those guys in the pink on the sword game are so annoying! They just wait for me to strike first and then hit me, bastards! :D

even if they're blocking you can still attack them as rubxqube says. It gets trickier as they get more advanced but you can tease em into one position then quickly change your blow before they can adapt.

even if they block, you can still block their counter and re-counter, you just need to get your angles right. you're not defenseless in that state.

Going through the showdown mode (or whatever it's called) really got my attack and defend skills up a ton.

Just always be watching if someone is already in striking position. If it's a green shirt, they need to be in that position for awhile before they strike. Fatties strike much faster and bosses will change up their strike positions rapidly.

Always look for the fatties, yellow shirts or bosses in a group. Make your attacks parallel to their sword guard when you're dispatching green shirts so when you get to the blocking person, you'll already be swiping at them in the proper direction.

Green shirts - Just kill them, easy. Just watch out for the ones who are already in striking position for a long time before they reach you, they may attack you just when they are in range.

Pink shirts (fatties) - Watch their blade angle. If they are defending, simply attack them in parallel to that sword position twice quickly. They sometimes change guard positions between hits, if so, quickly be ready to block. If they are in attack position, get your block up perpendicular to their sword position and double-tap them when they are stunned.

Yellow shirts - Just harder green shirts. Make sure you attack parallel to their guard.

Black shirts - Don't stand toe-to-toe with these guys for too long. They change up their attack positions frequently and the longer the fight goes, the more likely you are to take damage.

Went through all 10 stages (didn't try reverse yet, was too tired) and was able to complete the majority of the stages with all my hearts and 30+ hit combos.

Interestingly, the regular enemies are the ones who are the most annoying in the later levels of the showdown mode. They don't hesitate to strike as soon as you're facing them. The red guys in comparison are easy, even if they block and have 2 HPs.

Got it on thursday. Amazing game. Better than expected: Swordplay, Basketball, Canoeing, Cycling and 100 Pin Bowling.

Quick recap needed:

So, sensor bar's calibration aid activated, yes or no?
Depends on your lighting conditions (sunlight, candles, halogen lamps = sensor bar). If there's a chance your remote might pick up (recalibrates M+) anything else beside the sensor bar: turn it off.

I leave it on. Never had a problem.

Just played this at a friend's house, and I loved it. HOWEVER, this should've been packaged with the Wii at launch. I sold my Wii about six months ago because of the waggle.

This just screams "give us more money", and I'm sorry, I'm not going to shell out a hundred bucks to play a system like it should have been played at launch.

That said, it truly is a blast to play, if you don't mind standing. Swordfighting is hilarious and actually takes a good amount of "skill".

One useful tip for showdown:

While you're facing a Mii and there are some other Miis next to him, hit those guys first; there's nothing they can do about it :lol .

That's some pretty strange reasoning there. Like saying the DSi should have been released instead of the original DS phat. Of course it would've been nice, but ultimately it's an unrealistic viewpoint.

I do think people are going to have to get used to this. I remember you could fake powerful movements by just flicking your wrist very quickly making the accelerometer read your movement as fast. With the M+ you actually have to move how you should.

I am really enjoying the game though, It's definitely making me more excited for the future M+ support. If Nintendo was smart they should really at some point start putting the M+ right in the Wii Remote, doesn't M+ bring a full Wii Remote purchase up to almost 100 bucks now, that's ridiculous.

On the other hand, the usual anti wii crowd is quite silent about Motion+ games. Are Grand Slam, Tiger Woods and Wii Sports Resort that good?

Just a thought: do you think the system would have cost 250$/€ if it had launch with a Wiimote + MotionPlus + a combination of Wii Sports and WSR? Cause it wouldn't have been cheaper.

[EDIT] Wait: I've just had a déjà vu feeling. Isn't this message a GAF meme or something?

Oli said:

Not really, because the original DS didn't promise a camera, and didn't promise things that it didn't deliver. The Wii was launched with a "motion controller", and while it did indeed detect motion, it didn't do much else. When they showed a demonstration for Zelda, they had the demonstrator swinging his arms like he was swinging a sword, when in reality any motion worked.

I didn't feel that I was lied to. I felt that my expectations were too high. I know I'm not the only one who felt that way.

But this isn't about MotionPlus, it's about Wii Sports Resort. And in it's own right, it's a good deal of fun.

Just got the game, having a lot of fun. After 10 minutes of sword play I am convinced this is how I must play the next Zelda. With a few tweaks, and the ability to move my character, and you have Zelda's combat ready to go. Just put in a Left/Right option this time :lol

just based it on videos of RS2, the sports resort sword fighting seems to be a lot more about accurate hits rather than slicing up people like in RS2. I'm not saying it's a bad thing in RS2 and I'm pretty excited for it, but I'm hoping there is a full game based on the WSR sword fighting eventually. The only thing I really don't like about the basic mechanics, other than not being able to move, is that to defend you still need to hold a button. I wish it was more of an advanced form of what Tenchu 4 or Warioware had where you just make sure your place is horizontal when their blade is vertical.

yeah, if this is the sword fighting in Zelda, I'd be satisfied. But I remember people saying the bow and arrow stuff should also be in Zelda, and I can't disagree more. Other than the neat tech demo feel of aiming without using the pointer, the archery really add anything new the pointer didn't do in Twilight Princess.

I can only speak to WSR, but as someone who hasn't turned on his Wii for probably a full year until yesterday, it felt like I had just bought the system all over again.

WSR gives you the same high you had when you played the original WS, which is just awesome.

Super Kudos to Nintendo for finally nailing motion controls.
